Quacker wrote:I am not foolish enough to think that these are the "Originals" - although that would be totally cool - but on the same token, they do appear slightly different to the Comicket edition which is why I decided not to post in my Gallery that they are either the 'Originals' nor the 'Comicket edition', I think I can get away calling them simply 'Genga'
[Sensei tries to get the loup to stay in his eye like a monocle but decides it makes him look too much like Cho Hakkai from Saiyuki. And he doesn't have a cute dragon to help him look at the sketches under discussion.] We've got two levels of terminology here. "Genga" [原画] does literally translate as "Original sketch," though "keyframe" is the clearer parallel term in American animation terminology. Yes, these images are genga without a doubt. [Douga [動画] are the "moving sketches" or the actual frames filmed to produce the scene, including keyframes and inbetweeners generated by junior animators.]

Now the issue is whether these are "autograph" (pencil on paper) or "copy" (mass produced by a duplicating machine). That can be hard to tell without a look at the sketch under high magnification. The fact that a high-quality set of repros were made and sold at Japan's major doujinshi fair tips the odds toward them being copies. But I have a doujinshi that was created using genga from a particular scene from CCS. I'd guess it too was originally sold at Comiket, and yet I've seen the autographs of the gengas used in making this doujinshi dribble onto the YHJ market afterwards.

So it would not be out of the question that someone used the Fate/Zero autograph sketches as the source for this small-run production of repro sketches. Then, after selling this edition out, they added to the profit by auctioning off the autographs.

If the sheets came with the original cut bags and timing sheets, then that would, in Yupa's mind and mine, suggest that this is in fact what happened, and you have the autograph gengas. But we are hanging in there (loups in hand or awkwardly squeezed in eye sockets), watching for further details and the promised "big hit" yet to come.

Thank-you Rekka. I can say the exact same thing about your Gallery - some nice pieces from shows I have never ever heard of before.

I apologize for my delayed response; with the End of Financial Year fast approaching along with markets which are violently erratic combined to make for a hectic week where there was very little time for anything but work; let alone the researching or uploading of cels.
Thankfully today was different and have spent the vast majority of it finalising and finally updating.
First up, there are these two Gengas of the ever-mysterious Quon from the sublime 'Rahxephon' series:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366371
Full set of Gengas/Dougas from the very first scene where Ayato meets Quon.

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366370
Quon's final transformation (some nudity).

A brand new section for 'Ah!! My Goddess' which starts with two movie cels:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366390
and
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366391

Fate/Stay Night includes one Rilezu cel of a kidnapped Sakura Matou from Episode 18:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366494
This is a large, colourful & beautifully detailed cel.

There are three new Full Metal Panic Rilezu cels, including two with more "Fan-Service" elements which I usually avoid:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366492
and
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366493

The last Rilezu cel is taken from the epilogue right at the end of the series, shared between Kaname & Sousuke. This is my favourite of the three new cels, a beautiful close-up of a smiling & happy Kaname:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366496

Another new Rilezu cel from 'Shuffle':

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366389
This Rilezu is from the show's Opening Credits.
An interesting tidbit I learned while researching this series is that Ei Aoki - Director of 'Fate Zero' played a part in this series, along with other notable designers & directors.

There are of course a few new 'Escaflowne' updates:-
The first being this Hitomi profile:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366393

A movie version of the Businessman, Dryden:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366392

Along with two beautiful gengas, one depicting Hitomi's fateful run towards Van & her destiny:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366479

the other is a detailed profile of Princess Millerna:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366482

Lastly, but certainly not the least is this selection of Martian Successor Nadesico cels from the Series & the Movie:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366489
An Ai Opening Credit which accompanies the one already in the Gallery

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366487
Jiro Yamada/Gai Daigoji:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366488
An Aestivalis, the mechas used during the series.

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366490
Minato

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366485
A chibi Ryoko

A Selection of nice Ruri Hoshino cels:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366491
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366497

Finally a Yurika movie cel:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=366484

On top of the updates above, if that was not enough I have also started to re-scan some of the more older images along with those that simply looked like they could do with a much needed upgrade; some have been completely re-scanned and now include more detail that may have been missed the first time. Please enjoy the updates.
My Cel Gallery can be found here:

A growing collection of Escaflowne, Evangelion, FMP, Fate/Stay Night plus other cels that are among my Favourites. No cheap & nasty stuff here.

Hey Boss, totally enjoying your grandiose/splashy update, see lots of expensive goodies there which signifies great purchase power :D My favor this time are your Yurika cel and the Quon's transformation Genga/Layout and especially that Layout, the scene is quite breathtaking.

Quite an update: well worth the slow, detailed working through, as it is certainly not a "hey, neat cels" kind of event. As always, your research on the show you collect and your effective descriptions of the contexts in which they appear are greatly appreciated. I think as Japanese animation is recognized as an interesting contribution to global culture, an approach like this is going to be more and more the expected norm for online galleries.

A number of new additions caught my eye. This Full Metal Panic! rilezu of Kaname is infectious both for its bright colors and for the joyous expression, with just a touch of devilry, which your commentary explains. It fits well with this image that you previously obtained showing Kaname and Tessa celebrating their mission's first anniversary.

Your new Ah My Goddess Movie cel is indeed a "signature" moment in the plot, and yours is one of the finest sequence-mates that I've seen pop up in collections.

The OP cel from Martian Successor Nadesico is a good addition to your existing A1 cel. The brilliance of Ai's blue eyes really makes this character image "pop."

Among the sketches, the new Rahxephon sketches of Quon are very interesting. Clearly a complex character that makes the plot more than just a mecha story. I'm puzzled, though, by your comment that "These are not the line-photocopies used to scan the image into the animation program, but the drawing itself." They are gengas, or keyframes in American lingo, and autograph by all appearances. But in my experience the dougas, or individual frames, were also done by hand (admittedly in "paint-by-number" outlines that are less compelling than the gengas) and not, so far as I know, done by machine or photocopy.

Can't help adding to your comment on Houko Kuwashima, seiyuu for Quon, that she also did the lead role in Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (Maron <--> Jeanne). That was another very complex job, as KKJ is not your usual magical girl series but gets quite dark in places.

Finally, I'm very impressed with the new gengas from Escaflowne Ep. 1. With this series fast achieving the well-deserved status of a classic in its queered genre (girl mecha), having the original keyframes from this significant moment is a real coup.

Obviously this update is the result of some complex searching and negotiations, followed by the research needed to put them in their correct context, both in terms of narrative and animation history. Congratulations on some hard work brought to term. Now hutch out and catch a huge fish for Kaname!

Thank-you UB-Lee. Admittedly I did splash out a little more than normal on this occasion - but then, that was part of my resolutions for this year - to pick-up the pace of purchases & spoil myself a little more. Unfortunately though, there are a number of new, upcoming projects that in order to be successful & turn a profit, I will need to divert funds away from my collecting and fully utilize in these projects/developments.

I thought you would enjoy the Quons mate - but as you can imagine it was fight in order to acquire both of them. As I reported in an earlier post; with the success of the new "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" anime - previous Production items from the main staff are popular & in demand at the moment. Upon receiving that Quon pan, I was shocked to see the state of its condition - especially since coming from a "Private" Collector? It is a Pan shot and the Genga itself is actually made of two normal sized pieces stuck together with no more than common sticky-tape!? The tape had not been removed & the infamous yellow/brown stain was already showing on the art/paper. Spent around two hours removing the remaining tape along with the stains & molded sticky-tape, but you can still see the remains & damage already done on my scans.
Oh I like your new Signature Sign-off too - with Sabre. Which story is that taken from, is that for "Carnival Phantasm"?

Thank-you Sensei. The kind words do mean a lot, as yes, I did spend a fair bit of what precious little spare time I do get, researching & gathering what relevant information I can find to post-up and share in my Gallery.
sensei wrote:Your new Ah My Goddess Movie cel is indeed a "signature" moment in the plot, and yours is one of the finest sequence-mates that I've seen pop up in collections.
The Duckworth household is only now discovering the joys of "Ah My Goddess" with my "Little Sis" slowly watching her way through the series. "Rozen Maiden" is still the firm favourite, but AMG is muscling its way into third place - Escaflowne is Second; hey she has Good taste!!
sensei wrote:The OP cel from Martian Successor Nadesico is a good addition to your existing A1 cel. The brilliance of Ai's blue eyes really makes this character image "pop."
I had been after a later sequence-mate for my A1 cel as I really wanted to show Ai's full face, rather than just the profile. It is interesting you noted her eye's "popping" as that is specifically what Sato-San & Gatoh-San had planned. Without spoiling the plot: Ai's very short sequence in the Opening Credits was meant to mirror her role in the story itself - seen for only a short period of time, but she is constantly referred to & mentioned throughout the series until the twist right at the end. So extra emphasis was placed on Ai's design & eyes to make her 'stand' out more during the credits.

In that case, it would be the Dougas I was referring to. The additional information on Kuwashima-Chan I have already added into the description (and paid you Credit for the info.)."Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" is another in a long line of series' which have not been released in Australia, nor appear they never will. It does sound & look very interesting going off your descriptions & gallery items.

These Escaflowne Gengas are quite the treasure chest for me as anything half-way decent from this series is extremely difficult to not only find, but then to purchase as the prices tend to be driven quite high! But I was fortunate enough to be notified about a Private Seller and was able to purchase some truly beautiful cels which provide a fair representation of the series.
It has been an adventure, tiring & frustrating at times, but still very much worth the effort. Thank-you Sir, that very much sounds like a decent plan!

Yeah, I guess lots of sketches are like that now, especially for a show that's aired back in 2002. Its hard for me to tell who are the private collectors and who are the sellers, don't know the criteria, but I would think a private collector would take better care of their stuff, or perhaps they got it in that condition. I have pan sketches that are made some years earlier than that came to me split into two pieces already which I had to remove the leftover tape from, with horrible tape burns that'll never recover.

And Thanks! the signature is actually just a saber from fate and excalibur from soul eater. Absolutely awesome action/adventure/comedy btw, I would totally recommended it if you haven't checked it out and have sometime to :)

Thank-you so much P.Nadia.
I must say, I enjoy your Gallery too, especially the "Evangelion" section (of course) & massive "Nadia" dedicated section.

My personal definition of a "Private Collector" are linked to the infamous 'Black-hole' collectors we all love to hate; where certain items are purchased off YHJ/Mandarake only to disappear forever, never to make another appearance online again until they are sold a number of years later. I used to think it was mostly hardcore Japanese collectors that constituted the main bulk of Private Collectors, but over the last 12months have noticed quite a few "RIN****" winning bids where the cels have not been put on RS/known on-line Gallery or a Dealer site?
It is natural to assume that a hardcore collector would take better care of their items - but the majority of the time, they have actually collected far too many items to take the necessary time to dedicate in preserving their items. Mostly items are packed & jammed into confined spaces and just left there!?

"Soul Eater"? I have heard of it, but is a series I have not been able to check out as yet; it was produced by studio BONES wasn't it? If you recommend it mate, I shall check it out. Currently enjoying & loving "Dusk Maiden" for the first time.

Just in time for "Open House". This week I received a batch of "Escaflowne" Cels I had acquired from a serious Private Collector. These are some of the nicest Esca. cels I have seen available for some time & I am really pleased to get them scanned and back out on the 'net so that others may enjoy.
First up is this Van OP:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367524

Hitomi END Credit:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367523

Episode 1: Van in his 'Dragon' armour:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367521

Episode 7: Van & the Escaflowne:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367522

A Great close-up shot of Folken complete with his black wings:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367525

A close-up shot of Dilandau at his menacing & sneering best:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367520

Along with these "Escaflowne" cels, I have also been able to acquire some original "Rozen Maiden" layouts. All three layouts have written notes/instructions on them, directing how the scene should look & play out. These notes undoubtably would have come from either the talented Kumi Ishii who was the Character Designer as well as the Chief Animation Director (for all seasons including the third latest season which has just started airing in Japan) or from the Lead Director, Kou Matsuo.

Shinku:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367518

Suiseiseki:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367517

Suigintou:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367516
(this one is my favourite of the batch)

Along with the "Rozen Maiden" layouts, I was also fortunate enough to hunt down a rough layout depicting the actual Rahxephon from "Rahxephon" from episode 6 as it is about to finish-off its adversary:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367519

A new "Inuyasha" cel, my first Kikyo - the first of many hopefully:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367513

And lastly, being a "Phoenix" update, of course there are some more "Nadesico" cels:-

First up is this cute Ruri OP Credit:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367512

Episode 2 cute/angry Yurika:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367515

Another Ruri:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367511

And lastly is this fantastic cel showing Ruri once again, but this is from the infamous 'beauty pageant' episode where she is wearing her blue dress and singing "Anata no Ichiban ni Naritai" - I want to be your Number 1:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=367514
(this is my favourite from the new Nadesico cels)

The last few days have been a bit full-on and this weekend is no different, with some cels I have not had the chance write any notes in as yet nor completed research for, but will aim to update through the week.
If you have a spare moment, please check out the new additions.

How are you doing? I have a question about this cel http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=357724

Would you mind telling me what the sequence number is on that cel? I ask because I have A2 from that sequence with original background. I'm still new to collecting, but I figured there would only be one background for the whole sequence and not two so I'm surprised.

Love the Esca additions, esp. Van! You've only had ladies and mech to peruse until now. (though Dilandu has been there awhile but counts as... no spoilers for those who haven't seen the masterpiece that is Esca.)

Hey Sue, thank-you for dropping-by and exploring through the new items. Your own Escaflowne collection is quite Awesome itself - we now even have OP Van sequence buddies!!
I am currently negotiating for a second batch of Esca. cels from the same Collector, hopefully I will be able to post those up before the end of the year?

Oh 'congratulations' too, I noticed earlier in the week that you were the "lucky One-Hundredth" poster :cheers

Sorry Slime-dude, this past week has been manic; last night was the first opportunity I had to get back home & check on that Inuyasha Cel. Mine is the 'A5' from that sequence with the Background labelled as "D199". Hope this helps?

I like the latest updates, keep them coming! Looking forward to your uploads of the OP & END cels.

Hey everyone! It has been a long while since my last true update, but I am due to have the next couple of weeks off so I am hoping this will allow me the necessary time to upload those items collected over the last four months as well as 'renovate' the online gallery, taking on-board suggestions received from the "Open House" earlier in the year.

To kick-off this latest round of Updates, is the wholly new section devoted to one of my new all-time favourite series': "Dusk Maiden of Amnesia".
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... esID=47315

This series was only 'officially' released in Oz only in June this year, but I remember it generated a lot attention & buzz here on the boards while it was first screening/streaming back in 2012 and was very keen to check out what it was about.
I definitely was not disappointed with the show. Marketed here as mostly a "horror/thriller" type series, it is so much more than that, being a mixture of comedy, ecchi/harem along with hefty portions of romance & drama to complement the central horror & thriller vibe running through the series.

Included in this new section are some Settei with full drawing references of the main characters:-
Yuuko Kanoe:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371598
and
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371597

Teiichi Niiya:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371586
and
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371588

Kirie Kanoe & Momoe Okonogi:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371581

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371559

Along with Settings & surrounds of Seikiyou Academy:
http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371556

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=371555

Also, it is midday Christmas Eve here, please allow me the opportunity to wish you a Happy & Merry Christmas, enjoying with friends & family. May the Egg-nog flow freely & the be presents stacked high, peace to all friends & neighbors with 2014 being a prosperous year ahead :cheers

A late response, but I've been busy with holiday mayhem with family aiding and abetting. But thanks, Quacker, for providing an interesting and lucid introduction to this series. While the creative emphasis of earlier anime went into 52- or 26- episode series (not to mention long-running sagas like Slayers, Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, etc.) it seems to me that in the last decade the very best animes have been in the tight, focused 12-episode format. Long enough to tell an interesting story, short enough to keep the narrative focused with minimal loose ends and fillers.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia seems to draw on the genuinely creepy elements of Japanese ghost beliefs, with a setting that suggests that they persist (like the gothic house of Yuuko's namesake in xxxHolic) in the middle of a superficially modernized Japanese culture, a ghost in a society that often tries to act like a well-oiled machine.

Thanks for your diligence in scanning the settei pages and annotating them in ways that provide a useful introduction to this series. I'll add it to my screen list.

It has been quite a few months since my last full update (not since July last year!) but finally found some spare time over the weekend to upload & update my on-line gallery. Many new items have been added encompassing a number of the main Anime series' I like to collect from as well as a few new Titles. Hopefully there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Two of those new collections:-
'Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do you remember love?'

A gorgeous Minmay cel. (Unfortunately there is currently photocopy of the matching Hikaru layer stuck-fast to the main Minmay layer). I have fond memories watching this fantastic movie on a VHS tape; being amazed at the sheer quality of animation, amount of detail & action set-pieces along with the music, but appalled by the shocking dub.

'Shiki'
Another recent anime series release that has since become firmly entrenched within my top favourites, taking vampire-lore back to basics and presenting them as a pack of hunters and predators.
This piece also represents my very first Hanken purchase - Yeh!!

Those that have watched the series will recognize the character depicted as being Megumi Shimizu. It is an Original Sketch in which many of the artist's/Directors handwritten notes & instructions are along the sides of the picture which was cut-off by my scanner due to the size of the Hanken.

'Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu!?'
Three new Rilezu's were collected and added to the 'FMP:Fumoffu' section:

The top two links are Eyecatches used throughout the series, one with Kaname & the other being of Sosuke.
The bottom link is from episode 9 - the one with the hot spring - with a naked Tessa & a rubber duck protecting her modesty.
I really like the two new eye catches, they go so well together (MAJOR Thank-you to Anime Jewel) - whereas the Tessa rilezu I was able to scan & upload last weekend, which for some 'strange' reason it has already earned 100+ hits/views?!

'Nadesico'
There are also three new 'Nadesico' cels.

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373153
The first shows a cute Yurika & Megumi together in their EVA space suits, having just attempted to find & rescue a stranded Akito - but Akito ending up rescuing them.

The second is a huge Pan cel of all the female Aestivalis pilots together - this cel is literally 1m long!! Did my best to fit & squeeze as much of the Cel in as possible, but portions had to be left out on both sides.

Finally, there is another Cel from the 'idol' episode, this showing Ruri in her swimsuit towards the end of her song.

'Evangelion'
Hugely proud of finding this Cel & purchasing it!

From one of the very final scenes (one of the few scenes newly animated) for the last TV series episode, showing Rei after just being knocked to the ground.

'Rahxephon'

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373202
A new scene cut which includes the Genga, Douga and layout showing Quon & her parasol - which became synonymous with her character throughout the series.

'School Rumble'
A whole bunch of new gengas & characters added to this section:

Two of one of my favourite Scho-Rum characters - Yakumo.

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373039
Two large Genga sheets of two new characters not shown in my collection as yet - Sara & Yuuki.

'Vision of Escaflowne'
Finally, but certainly not the least, I have been extremely fortunate & grateful to acquire some gorgeous new 'Escaflowne' cels:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373046
These first two are close-ups of Hitomi, well the first is actually more a close-up of Hitomi's eye than anything else?

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373337
This next Cel is from one of my favourite episodes among the entire series - where each of the main male characters realize what Hitomi actually means to them; with Van choosing that no matter what - he will find & bring Hitomi back! He not only needs her, but wants her back too; it is such an amazingly emotional episode, directed superbly as each character experiences their own pain of loss & longing.

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=373336
These last two are of the tragic cat-woman twins, Eriya & Naria.
Some uploads are not 100% finalized as yet as I am still researching notes.

Please enjoy & browse-around, thank-you to those who have already PM'd & sent emails on the earlier updates.
