Once Upon A Time I Used to Update

Post by toonybabe »

Hi Everyone!!! I have not been very active on AB lately and I actually went over a year without updating my gallery. There have been a lot of changes in my life lately (graduating from college, finding great job) and I haven't been able to devote a lot of time to my gallery or this awesome community. I HAVE been making cel purchases here and there though. In July I managed to finish updating with everything from the past year but then I got distracted again and forgot to post anything on AB about it. So here it goes...over a year's worth of production art!

Chipmunk Adventure:

Gay Purr-ee:

Inspector Gadget:

Inuyasha:

Scooby–Doo:

Sonic the Hedgehog:

Unico In the Island of Magic:

NEW SERIES/FEATURES:
Disney's Atlantis: http://likeabutterfly.rubberslug.com/ga ... mID=349582
Rainbow Brite: http://likeabutterfly.rubberslug.com/ga ... mID=350186
In the Night Kitchen: http://likeabutterfly.rubberslug.com/ga ... mID=350255

I am especially ecstatic about finding the Robotnik cels from Sonic SatAM – they used to belong to the late head writer of the show, Ben Hurst. The Rainbow Brite cel was actually a present for my sister, she's just letting me show it in my gallery :D I am also very proud of the Penny and Brain cel from Inspector Gadget and the cel of the bakers from the animated feature In the Night Kitchen, based off of Maurice Sendak's book. I made that purchase the day Sendak passed away (I had been drooling over it on a dealer's website for a long time). I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me find some of these cels! :hello

Although I have been neglecting my gallery lately, I think about cartoons all of the time. Since I am finally settled in my new job, feeling a bit more secure and not feeling pressured to use my art to make money I am thinking about starting a blog about animation. I am definitely making more time to watch cartoons/anime this year, whether I write about them or not!

Of your new cels, the Penny/Brain cel is my favorite. I used to watch a lot of Inspector Gadget when I was a kid.

...and, of course, I'm a huge fan of your sister's new Rainbow Brite cel! :D

Very, very interesting and beautifully done cel from In the Night Kitchen. The animation, from what I can tell, was done in Czechoslovakia. I can read the numbers, though (like a lot of Eastern European writing) it's a bit like German fraktur. It says:

M4, 15
160, 1
223, 4

There's a thin dash under each set of letters/numbers that also makes reading it tricky. Unfortunately you'd need to know more about the continuity system the studio used to interpret what it means, but I'd guess that it's some distinctively Czech way of identifying the scene, cut, and sequence of the cels. Wonderful background! That certainly was worth what you and your parents paid for it.

I also like the very wistful Cheri from Unico and the sly image of Meowrice from Gay Purr-ee. Congratulations on your additions and thanks for an entertaining and useful bunch of annotations.

Thanks ReiTheJelly! Your Rainbow Brite collection is AMAZING! My sister and I were looking at your gallery - she loves it! We actually remember coloring in those coloring books when we were little. She liked Rainbow Brite so much her birthday cake had a Rainbow Brite theme for 10 years growing up :cucu

Sensei – Thank you so much for translating the productions numbers for me! I was trying to figure out what they were but I just gave up. Gene Dietch is from Czechoslovakia so I do think the animation was done there. He also did some Tom and Jerry cartoons in the 1960's that were released in Czechoslovakia. They're a little weird though...

I am always impressed by the animated shorts Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. They were able to animate Sendak's books so that it looks like his illustrations are really moving! No one would EVER put that much effort into creating a short animated film from a children's book these days. Now they hack apart a picture book in photoshop and stitch it back together into a crappy animation so they can sell it on the iPhone for $2.99 a download. One of the reasons I jumped at the cel was because I though its price would skyrocket after Sendak's death. Then I would never get a chance to put it in my gallery. The background is just a color copy - its not matching but from another sequence in the film.

Here is a link to the animations if you've never seen them before. The music and narration is awesome too: http://yourdailycartoon.blogspot.com/20 ... night.html

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! THE HEX GIRLS FTW!! :) I wonder how Ben Ravencroft is getting along with his "ancestor" at the other side? :p

Your Unico cels compel me to torrent the movies and pray it wouldn't haunt me the way The Last Unicorn did, oh gosh that hurt :hurt: :hurt:

Loved your updates, I can't wait to see more soon <33

Thanks Cecilia!

The Hex girls are frickin awesome! I'm just waiting on a good cel of them to come along before I pounce! If you want to own a copy of Unico In the Island of Magic, they recently released a digitally remastered DVD on Amazon.
