In My Dreams - Update: The Week in Review!!

Post by Jadeduo »

When did I get so old!!!! Well I made it 10 years on Rubberslug and in this hobby there ups and downs and all arounds some years when nothing was added and years of so many additions I am still trying to catch up years later!

In honor of the anniversary, I have updated the gallery to be very festive! I stuck with a manga image for the gallery banner as a way to pay homage to the original artist and I will probably stick with that ^_^!!

Also there was a small update of two cels one in SM and one in SMR. I also updated some sections I DBZ back on New Years, but never posted so feel free to take a look see!

On a side note! So far the budget New Years Resolution is holding I still have 3800 yen leftover from this month!!! Wish me an uneventful End of month!

Thanks so much to everyone for the memories and enjoy your visit!!

Congratulations Jadeduo!!

10 Years is certainly a significant achievement to be proud of.

If you do mind my asking and then sharing: - out of those 10years, which year would you say was your "Best" for collecting? And then, which Year would you label as being your "worst"? I basically started collecting 'full-time' in 2008/09, so anything before that time period I am fascinated in hearing about.

Here's wishing you another decade of successful collecting in this hobby we all enjoy.
My Cel Gallery can be found here:

http://celsphoenix.rubberslug.com/gallery/home.asp

A growing collection of Escaflowne, Evangelion, FMP, Fate/Stay Night plus other cels that are among my Favourites. No cheap & nasty stuff here.
Come, check out the cutesy female & Mecha madness!!

Thanks so much Quacker, it has been quite a ride! I hope to continue collecting for many years to come, in fact this year I have implemented a strict budget. Hopefully as a means to stop the binge spending that I have a tendency to do... It also causes me to go into hiatus for a while, which has happened intermittently over the years... So can't in all honestly give you the most whole picture of the last ten years, but I can give you an idea. :)

I first started in 2003 when prices were in the range of absolutely insane. Sailor Moon cels were going for twice to three times what they are selling now, and the market was much more abundant. At the time the community was thriving there was always a lot of chatter on Beta, the cel update page was accurate, YJ was busy in basically every anime. This first year or two were very productive but not as productive as I would like, as prices were high everywhere and I just did not have the cashflow to compete. These first two years are when I picked up some of my signature and most loved pieces... The SCENE Yue/Toya, the First Eppy Juppy etc.

Then in late 2005, I started working in Retail which slowed my production and interest. I did not sell off everything but I made a dent or two in my collection by getting rid of some pieces that I regret to this day. I was still buying but it all but halted to trickle.

Then in 2007 I was promoted to General Manager of the Naples BAM. And I started buying again, I had the cashflow and the market was booming once again. Also prices in DBZ and SM had considerably cooled from the 2003 heyday when it was $200+ for a SailorStars cel no matter the character. The two years I was out in Naples/Fort Myers were my second most productive time, I picked up a ton of artwork that I have still not caught up on, although the bulk of it is up now. I still have a stack of x1999 Movie Douga Copies that I have never put up because they are more of reference art than anything else not original, but maybe someday I will get to it in case anyone is interested.

In 2009 I lost my job, pretty horrendous thing to go through, but I did not let anything go. Once I was back up on my feet I came back to market late 2010/early 2011, the market has been kind and not kind. There is less out there than before but, there is still enough to be interesting. I also noticed that prices have dipped considerably, overall. There are very few pieces commanding the kind of prices they used to. Which is great for a buyers market but terrible for people selling. The sheer amount of CCS, DBZ, and SM that has come to market that has either been wishlist or really reasonably priced so it was hard to turn down has been mind boggling to me. For example, I picked up an Episode 66 Yukito for 16.33, seriously! I did not think it possible as it is a beautiful shot, I'm not sure if this is a culmination of people leaving the market, or if there is just no one out there collecting CCS any longer it is quite mind boggling! A similiar thing happened in DBZ, I recently picked up an SSJ4 Gogeta for 140, which a couple of years ago 200+ easy!

So in conclusion, now is a great time to be at the market. I think that yes it has cooled and there is less out there, however what is, is more reasonably priced and I've found over the years that as long as you are watching that thing you missed will always come back to market.

Happy Hunting!

Congratulations on your latest batch of updates. I've been watching them quietly on RS during breaks from revising "The Fairy-Telling Craft of Princess Tutu," an academic piece for a forthcoming collection of folklore essays (in discriminating college book stores by Christmas, hopefully). Your Ep. 66 CCS additions are very nice, and that gallery is a resource for people interested in these crucial scenes. Those last five episodes really are special; I remember watching through them (on VHS fansubs!) back in 2001 and waiting for the series to weaken, or turn sentimental, or predictable ... and even as a seasoned academic I was amazed when it never did. (Until the second movie ... but everything jumps the shark at some point.)

For the record, I know it's not new to you but it's new to us: Your Gundam Wind OP 2 Duo Maxwell is a real stunner.

Quacker's question is interesting and might make an interesting thread of its own. As I focused on CCS early on and have found art from this pretty affordable all along, I don't know that I could see that clear a boom and bust. It certainly is true that both the boom of new inventory and the bustle of chattering collectors have both faded since I began. Probably my best year was 2003, the first full year I was on SMJ at a time when some primo stuff was arriving on YJ and I was still teaching and had enough excess to go for some of the better items. But 2006, the first year when I diversified to a wider range of series, both cel- and CGI-based, would be a close second.

But I can't really define a bust year, though retirement has meant a much tighter budget. As inventory tightens on some series, I've explored newer interests, and somehow always manage to spend my monthly budget, sometimes all in the first week of the month. The smaller number of additions and updates are OK, as I'm reaching the upper limits of the amount of art I can reasonably keep in good condition. So the last five years have meant a healthy shift in emphasis from obtaining to maintaining. I do miss the chatter, but still enjoy my visits to Beta and to other curators' galleries, so it's still a good time to be in the game.

Thanks as always Sensei! BTW, Best of luck on your academic essays and such ^_^. I'm glad you enjoy the Episode 66 wing of my gallery. There are so many pieces I am still hunting for from that episode it feels like it is always a work in progress. ^_^

As you know I agree with you on the last five episode some of the finest storytelling/animation in the entire series. I also seriously agree with you about the second movie, we seriously did not need the extra treacle... IJS...
For the record, I know it's not new to you but it's new to us: Your Gundam Wind OP 2 Duo Maxwell is a real stunner.
Thanks!! LOL I've had that one for a VERY long time (2005), and when I added the GW sketches that I have been sitting on for the last couple months I made it a point to give every single cel a description and new scan. However RS doesn't always let you update with new scans, and so I had to start over from scratch and create a new file for the cel. It's nice to know that it's not necessarily bad thing when that happens because people come to your gallery and see things that they might have missed in past visits.

I will be putting up a series description sometime this week, and I promise, promise to get the Tennimon stuff up this week.

I have to agree that each time I have come to market in different time periods I have always been able to pick up something, it just kind of comes down to paying attention and sticking to your budget. Also when you get to the 100's in pieces that shift to maintenance is very important, because things you bought years ago need to be checked periodically re-scanned and have the bags changed out because that atmosphere inside of the bag eventually gets toxic to the cel. I do this about every 3-5 years depending on how the bags are holding up when I check the cels, if I notice any serious puckering in the bag that means it is time to switch out bags ^_^.

Happy Hunting!

Thank-you both, for sharing your story's JD, Sensei.

For me, it is fascinating to hear about the experiences of other collectors, especially from Senior Collectors such as yourselves.

Your new 'Tenshi Ni Narumon' cels are all quite nice, with the Mikael & Noelle:

http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=372664

being my favourite from the batch.
Good job pin-pointing & providing link to sequence mates & the Galleries they are currently located in too.

Sorry I'm slow in responding. I keep getting into my Tennimon video files looking for where that cel of Papa and Mama exercising might be. Such a lovely image ... but mysterious to me too. I also like your intense Angry Michael. Such a random, irritating show ... and yet with such extraordinary depths at the most unlikely moments. Thanks for giving such full commentary. I'd forgotten that Yuusuke cites "The Weaver Crane" fairytale to Sara in Ep. 6. That's a tale that every Japanese child would know but isn't in the Western canon. Should be, though. (It is implicitly one of the models used in the plot of Princess Tutu.

Thanks again for sharing your art and your enthusiasm!

Thanks Quacker! While I am still unsure where Tennimon will be something I will continue to pursue! What I have acquired feels pretty good!

And it is always good to talk about the good ole days, it brings you back to where you've been and where you are going! Also the reason I add sequence buddies is all Sensei's fault! I love how he does his gallery so informative and thorough! And with the sequence mates if you click back to the main page of that gallery you will prolly find more lovely pieces to enjoy!

Sensei no worries on getting back to me too quickly! I agree the mama and papa cel has been driving me nuts I found all the others but that one has been gah! I figured throw it up maybe someone else will spot it. I thought it was from an episode when they all wake up in the morning and start crazily doing calisthenics for no reason! I thought it was early in and then when I went looking I could not find! So I leave it to everyone else!! Or until I rematch again next!

I do enjoy Tennimon if I need a good giggle specially I the early eppies! The great thing about it is every eppy will do a complete 180 on you to some super serious theme you weren't even thinking about! Amazing!

Anywho, keep in hunting!

First Ever Entirely Paper Update! 12/7/14 - LOVELESS! Part 1

Post by Jadeduo »

So, I've said it before and I will say it again, the Cel contest ate my life, as far as online fun stuff. So today I sat down and took one look at that inch of Loveless sketches I have picked up in the last 7 months, and I am going to knock out at least half of them!

@_@ Let's just say I'm not sure I am going to get there, there is an insane amount of paper here, and good chunk of it I have not identified yet. So my goal is to start with what I have identified and go from there...

Below are all from Episode One of Loveless... Warnings! Loveless is a Shonen-ai series, of course Yun Kouga protests this, but methinks the girl protest too much in this case. It is VERY hard to watch this series without those goggles, and if you can more kudos to you! Also SPOILERS, if you have not seen Loveless and hate spoilers, do not read I am a crazy person that does scene breakdown with every piece. You have been WARNED! ^_^

http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=380959 He was gone when I opened my eyes - Ritsuka

I am still in progress with this update, and I have a preview of the second part in progress now, so, so far from Episode 2, Memoryless:

http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=381213 Nothing... - Ritsuka

http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=380965 Well I don't know... - Dr. Katsuko

Well guys wish me luck, I will be updating for a few more hours and then to bed, but I will cross my fingers that I will be clearing my desk tonight. That is the goal at least! *Runs off to do more updating!*

A very interesting batch of paper! It is especially nice that a number of other collectors hold individual sketches from these cuts, but you seem to have obtained the basic skeleton of these scenes in the layouts, roughs, and many of the gengas. You also raise some important questions about the artists involved. Asatte no Houkou was also a J.C.Staff production from about the same time, and a comparison of the production process might help suggest some ways to look at these sketches.

It took me a long time to sort this out, but AnH had two chief animation directors and the usual team of episode animation directors. The two chief ADs alternated episodes, one (Ikuko Itou) taking the odd numbered ones, and the other (Shinkya Hasegawa) taking the even numbered ones. That eventually let me see that the sketches on light green paper were by one or the other of these chief ADs, and the ones on yellowish/orange paper were by the episode animation directors. I'd make a shrewd guess, then, that the green ones are all by Nakayama Yumi, and the others are by one or another of the episode ADs, probably the more senior of the two listed for each one (i.e., Haruko Iizuka or Tetsuya Matsukawa). They are very sharp and show an expert hand, and both animators came to the episodes with a lot of experience doing gengas.

Anyhow, your gallery sheds a lot of light on this episode, and so the inch of paper was well worth the having. It's great to see a trove like this find a curator who is willing to work hard on understanding what it says about the production of this series, rather than try to split it up and see individual sketches one by one on auction or at cons.

Thanks Sensei, I actually was looking to see if you had collected anything from J.C. Staff when I started working on these new additions. I don't know how I missed Asatte no Houkou as I spent a fair amount of time in that wing when the update came out... I am an idget... *face/wall* I will be stalking that wing tonight as I continue the updates. That is great that you were able to figure out how they used the colored paper at JC Staff it makes a ton of sense as anything on the Green Paper is super high quality, however some are not stamped, I really don't know what the stamp means only what I have been able to research using my Google-fu. And the Orangey/Yellow paper is nice but not as nice as the Green.

I have some more pieces still from Episode two coming, an entire treasure trove of Key Pans, corrections, and genga, from a very key scene in Episode 8, and another stack of yet to be identified which will not happen until I finish screenshotting Loveless. There are just no really good online fan sites for Loveless, so I took it on myself to screenshot all 12 episodes. While time consuming should help me with all future purchases and will also help with identifying the stack of unidentified.

Thanks!
JD
