With most of us spending more time at home than usual, I thought I'd suggest another activity that would let collectors do what they do best, i.e., talk about their preciouses and why themses iss so precious to usss.

Show me a cel that is dear to you and yet is completely unknown to other collectors.

I don't mean just a rare item, one of a very few cels or sketches from a well-known series. Or one from a series that has its fans, but isn't for some reason sought after by anime art collectors. Or something from an "under the radar" series that isn't as well known as it ought to be. I could choose something from Princess Tutu for the first of these, from Tonde Buurin for the second, or from Asatte no Houkou for the third. But none of these is really "completely unknown." So I pick:


Jack Oshinumi and Puck from Yōsei-ō, or "Lord of Faerie"

This cel is from a one-episode OVA produced by Madhouse in 1988. It's an adaptation of Irish myths and folktales about the culture hero Cúchulainn and the rich fairy lore including the trickster spirit Puck. (Lucifer and his sweet babe Queen Mab/Maeve also put in appearances.) It's based on a 5-episode 1978 manga by Ryōko Yamagishi that develops a prominent shōnen-ai theme featuring the mythic Irish hero and a bishy mortal from Hokkaido named Jack Oshinumi. (Being of Irish descent myself, I want to make that last name O'Shinumy).

That hauled me over short in one of my trawls through Mandarake's daily auctions in 2012. I knew not a thing about the OVA, but it was such a well-designed and brilliant cel that I counted the auction down and nabbed it. Then I tried to find out something about its context and background, and at that time there wasn't much to find out, though Yamagishi subsequently gained a reputation as a major, prize-winning mangaka. Eventually I tracked down a fan's English summary of the manga and made a good guess as to what the cel showed, which turned out to be pretty close to the mark when a version of the OVA (in raw Japanese) showed up on YouTube six years later.

I've never run across a mention of this OVA in English, and this is the only cel I've ever seen show up for sale. I do keep Yōsei-ō on my Yahoo Japan trap line, but only see used copies of the manga in the items returned. It's about as totally unknown a cel as I've ever chosen to own, and yet it continues to haul me over for a long, admiring look, both in my gallery and in my cel book.

this cel is an eyecatch or a cel which proceeds or follows a commercial break halfway through the show.
The character from the show is named Ai Minamisato who is one of the female leads.
At the time of purchase I had no clue as to the series or the character. What drew me to it was that the blinds in the cel are actually cut out of the cel and the remaining strips are what are painted. Later Beta member Keropi contacted me and filled me in on the series and identified the character. I think I have only found one other person on RS besides him who has any cels from this series.

1. One that has own fan group but not lot of collectors: I would go with Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō

Yokohama is one of the best sf style manga that represent Japanese Mono no aware. It is famous among manga collectors in China. It also has it's own fan group. I am also a member in it. I even joined the Chinese traslation project of Ashinano Hitoshi (the author)'s new book. However, as far as I know, I am the only person within that group that collect cels from it's anime. Yokohama has 2 OVAs, one directed by Annou Takashi and one by Sakamoto Gou. Both are good works.

2.Simply unknown to most of people:
Since I have some friends in a group chat that watched 2k,3k and even 5k, It is really hard for me to pick something unknown to them. I'm not sure about here, but here it goes.


The chocolate panic picture show. The show is just like its name - after you whatch it you have no idea what you just watched. It is more likely an experimental anime and appearently, you don't see it oftenly from collector's galleries. However, it's director "Fujiwara Kamui" is a VIP in my list. This guy is a treasure for all the JRPG fans. He is the author of Roto no Monshō, which is a popular manga among Dragon quest fan. Also he is the character design of Terranigma which is one of my favorite games among all plantforms. This guy only touched 1 or 2 animes and Chocolate panic picture is one of them. Good thing for the cel is that it has his signature on it, so now I have his signature as well.

As far as I know, there are 2 or 3 collector from China (including me) who buy Kakyuusei. This show is popular among ero game fans since ELF can never be avoid for any ero game fan and Doukyuusei, Kakyuusei etc can never be avoided for and elf fan. But you are right, among cel collectors, not many people hunt those series.

That's greeeeat pan cel! Love it.
I have a whole cut (with bag) of the pia carrot ova which is the one right after DX. That is a dacing scene of those girls. I haven't scanned them yet. But it is defenitel the first time I ever got multi people dancing scene.

This series got caught in the middle because it's an old H-anime. The anime is not explicit enough to be grouped with regular H-anime wherever they're at, but because it's an old H-anime people didn't want to English subtitle it. I only got to see the anime from buying the VHS tapes from Yahoo Japan.

Here is another one, I just figured out that I owned it today.
The name is: Shiawase no Katachi
Under it's mal list there is basically no comment. Under anidb list, there is only one comment "I... guess you have to be Japanese to get this."
Luckily I finally found the anime on a Korean website later. If anyone knew this one before that would be really impressive I guess.

I just received this in the mail, and I figured it would be perfect for this thread. This is a color concept background painted by Barbara Schade. She did background work for Disney, Film Roman, Hanna Barbera, and other studios. This background concept was created for "The Magic Pearl", an animated version of a Chinese fairy tale that aired on ABC TV. Other than when it aired in 1997, it has only ever been released on VHS. Barbara Schade won an Emmy award for "Outstanding Individual in Animation" for her background work on this TV film.

That really is a superb piece of art, and it's sad that an animated production of that Emmy-winning calibre is now so difficult to access. It reminds me of Madhouse's 1984 Grimm's Fairy Tales: The Golden Bird, which was done in that studio's sumptuous style, but for some reason was not released until after Nippon's Grimm Masterpiece Theatre had shown there was a Japanese audience for Western fairy tale adaptations. (The rights were bought by Toei, who bundled it with an extended episode of Maple Town and an edited compilation of three episodes of Cho Shin Sei Flashman and marketed it as "Toei's Manga [i.e. "Storytelling"] Festival.")

I bought this cel from Anime Museum in 2008, assuming it came from the Nippon TV series, which my daughter and I used to enjoy watching on "Nick Toons" as "Grimms' Fairy Tale Classics." The dealer simply listed it as from "The Golden Bird," and I was bemused by the wry character design of the tale's witch.

But then I did my homework and found that Grimm Masterpiece Theatre didn't do an episode on "The Golden Bird." (It is a legitimate Grimm fairy tale, though.) For quite a while I honestly didn't know where it came from, until by chance I found a discussion of the Madhouse film as a "lost masterpiece" on an blog discussing obscure golden-age anime movies and series. Since then I've managed to pick up some additional cels (many in sadly poor condition) and some contemporary background materials, notably a photocopied settei for the project.

Collecting is always fun and often very educational. There's a lot more out there than just the series that most collectors find desirable.

In my case, I hadn't even heard of "The Magic Pearl" until I saw this background. It was simply listed as "Original production Cel - 1995 River Goddess Temple". The seller (based on their other listings) is a storage unit flipper, owns a second-hand shop, or something similar... not someone who specializes in animation art that would know details about the piece. However, it is signed and dated on the back. Using IMDB, I was able to find what Barbara Schade was likely working on around that time, and discovered The Magic Pearl.

I found a Russian dubbed version on YouTube, so I couldn't really "watch" it. However, I did skim through it to see if I could spot the background. As I said, this appears to be a color concept background, but I did find the final version and took a (poor quality) screenshot. Personally, I like the concept better than the final version, but it is often the case in my experience that the concept backgrounds are more detailed and colorful than what appears on screen.
