Brony Conventions- World of Weird

Post by Krafty »

This week I watched a TV programme called 'World Of Weird' which focus on some odd events/people/customs etc from around the globe. Alongside the dwarf matadors from Columbia and 'hire a friend/relative' in Japan stories, they featured the Brony Con held in Baltimore, USA.
I didn't know about this, but it's a specialist convention held primarily for male fans of the My Little Pony franchise, and it's a big thing too! Anyone here aware of this or have you experienced it for yourself? What are you thoughts on it?
My daughter is becoming a fan since catching the episodes on TV and she likes the toys/dolls. It obviously has a wide appeal. I must say it's not really my thing but I'm being taught the ponys' names by my clued-up girl ^__^

While I've never been to that particular convention or a dedicated Pony con, I have been conventions that were part anime/MLP. This was back in 2012, when MLP was starting to gain a foothold with older fans. AM2, in a bid to attract more paying attendees, invited three MLP voice actors. The charity auction had several toy ponies signed by their voice actor and I recall being amazed that some people were willing to drop a couple hundred on them.

MLP fans are the same as any other anime fan - They're dedicated to what they love. Most people will usually cosplay as human versions of each pony. For example, a woman cosplaying Applejack will parade around in a straw cowboy hat, pigtails (usually with apple ties), a plaid cotton shirt, jeans, a tail, pony ears and cowboy boots. I've seen MLP hoodies now with each pony's insignia on it, so many opt to wear those around as it's easier and doesn't get in the way as much. There are some very obsessed fans, though. A couple years ago, there was a story of one Brony who had a custom pony plushy who he considered his 'wife', going as so far as to take it to vegetarian restaurants and writing complaint letters to artists who drew his 'wife' in pornographic positions. It sounds strange, but I've seen anime fans tote around pillow versions (dakimakura) of their favorite character to spend time with them at cons, so, nothing really surprises me as weird anymore. On the contrary, I find this all really tame (pun not intended). Until Bronies start bidding on female MLP cosplayers at their convention for 'contractual activities', I'll consider them not as obsessive as some of the women and men who attended YaoiCon this past weekend.

...$2.4K for a guaranteed 3 hours of fun with 'Reno'... X|

LOL actually Brony-con is usually the week before Otakon at the BCC, so there is always some overlap of fans going to both conventions. Some of the female fans cosplaying as ponies do a real good job... The guys can be a little weird but what am I saying... I cosplayed as Wobuffet the week later at Otakon... so... ^_^;;

I think it's all in how you look at it. Some fans like to drop 2.4k for some man time, others like to buy sketches/cels of our husbandos for 200+ so to each their own I think! ^_^
