Yeah, Akira is really great.

You might try some Masamune Shirow stuff, like Appleseed. Not as good as Akira but still pretty great.

I enjoyed the 2 GITS mangas but they are very "written dialouge" heavy. Especially the 2nd book took a couple of rereading to grasp all of what is going on.

You might want to check out these mangas I have in my collection.

Battle Angel
Battle Angel Last Order
Gunsmith Cats
Saikano
Kekkaishi

There's not much in the way of 'Akira' type titles now since the genre seems to be passe. But some Shounen titles I like are...

"Holyland" - Bullied teen becomes the bully...kinda.

"Liar Game" - Smart guy helps naive girl outwit people. Lots of logic and suspense.

"Vinland Saga" - Takes place in the 800s and tells the story of a viking kid growing up on the frontier. Lots of violence and blood.

"Ushio & Tora" - Teenage boy armed with an ancient spear fights to protect the human and spirit world along with his youma sidekick/predator Tora.
