Need ID help: what the heck is this? Listed as "cel cop

A place to post wish lists, ask for help with IDing a cel, screen cap requests, translation requests ... etc.

Need ID help: what the heck is this? Listed as "cel cop

Post by noiwontsayplease »

At the risk of advertising an auction that you guys might bid against me on, what the heck is this?

http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/auc_e/item ... 4790100029

What does it mean to be a cel copy? It was not used in production obviously, but is it just another print of the lines with actual paint on them? I don't understand.

Thanks gang.

Jeez, I almost died when I saw that. o_o Those would be three wishlist cels of mine! I would really want to know what they are, too.

Edit: Looking closer, the young Hotaru with hat and Makoto and Minako "cels" look like they have the kind of dents you see on paper, so maybe they are paper copies. If this skyrockets, I can only imagine how much the real things would go for.

I would guess that they are photo copies of the real artwork for color purposes like you see in all the new computer generated anime setti sets. :(

Look at the starting price, they know it is nothing special or they would be in a Big Web Auction :?

I've always thought that, the lower the starting price, the more they know they're going to make a killing.

The Mistress 9 cel is a perfect example. It started at 600 yen. It was, when I last checked, at 17,600 yen.

As for this auction, it looks like the 'cels' could be test cels. The animation for episode 124/125 were very detailed, and I could easily see several tests made for more important sequences.

I too was thinking they could be test cels? If they are just printed paper copies then I am absolutely not interested, but if they are on cellulose then even if they are not production cels, I am interested.

I truly believe these are paper color copies of cels, as in Xerox copies, for a couple of reasons.

First, this auction is listed in the "Others" section rather than in their "Anime Cels" section. I thought Mandarake always lists any cel, whether it is production, a test cel or a fan cel in the anime cels section. Or am I wrong on this?

Second, I think I have seen this Saturn copy sold before on Yahoo Japan many years ago. Back then, a well known seller that usually sold high-end Sailor Moon cels put up a bunch of auctions of paper color copies of highly desirable SM cels. I know one of these auctions was for a Saturn pan cel copy and it could have been this same one. (Another one was a copy of a bank cel from the SuperS ending of all the senshi posing ) I remember someone started a thread on beta about it at the time. The auction descriptions did state that they were copies, but someone posted that they were fooled and ended up buying one without understanding it was just a xeroxed copy.

I just sent Mandarake a question, asking if these cel copies were on paper or acetate (plastic). I've never asked them a question before, so I'm not sure how quickly they will respond. If I get a response back, I'll be sure to post their answer here.

I just received a reply to my question from Mandarake (gotta love their very quick customer service!) and here is what they said:

They are papers, xerox copied sheets.
So they are not cell.

So it looks like we have a pretty clear answer.

Prices on Mandarake *tend* to skyrocket to crazy levels. It is not uncommon to see an auction with copies end in the thousands.

Thanks Luna-art for e-mailing Mandarake about this auction. You have the gratitude of many pocketbooks for your effort.
