Second Chances

Post by cutiebunny »

I'm sure everyone here has been through it - the one item that slipped through our fingers and that, in many cases, you've never seen again. Whether it was getting outbidded at the last moment, joining the hobby after your dream item was sold or arriving at the dealer's booth only to see the prized item walk away with its new owner, it's something that, at least in my experiences, I've had happen time and time again.

Assuming that you were given a "do over" pass, what item would you use it for? Vent out your toned-down frustrations! Tell us your story!

Just keep it PG(but use all the emoticons you want), since you never know if another member on this board owns it. :)

My greatest regret is being outbid for this cel on Yahoo!Japan in 2005. I've never seen the cel in a gallery, so I'm assuming a Japanese collector has her.

She was up for auction at the same time as my Cheshire Catgirl cel. I put bids on both, but at the time didn't have high enough bidding limits with my two deputies to be entirely successful -- it's pretty obvious which one I won. :D If I ever saw her for sale in the future, I would spend $$$$ to obtain her.

In terms of just not having enough money to be viable competition, this is the cel. She went to a Rinkya bidder, but has never appeared in a gallery.

Three years ago, I had a shot at a cel of Celcia from "Those Who Hunt Elves". It was an opening sequence cel that was going for 20,000 yen on Yahoo! Japan. I didn't bid on it, thinking it was too expensive. I never saw it relisted ever again. To this day, I've continued to look for cels of Celcia (any of her in elf form- no SD shots), but to no avail. It's the last cel on my list, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I also once saw a fantastic cel of Deedlit from the Lodoss OVA going for 120,000 yen (I don't care how good it looks- even I am not willing to spend that much). If someone has an image hosting service, I'd gladly share the picture of the cel with everyone.

Oh CB... sooo many pained cel regret memories you've dug up.
:bawl :bawl
Better put out the virtual plate of stale donuts, bad coffee
and kleenex for us -- it'll make the thread just a few
notches more comfie to cry and let it all out.
lol
Ack! I try not to think about how many lovelies I couldn't bring
home w/ me because of :
a) oversleeping
b) internet connectivity issues
or c) not enough dough $$$$

If I had to pick just 2, it would be a season 6 OP Shampoo cel
I stupidly didn't exercise the BIN for because a similar
sequence mate popped up on yj at the same time for a
low opening bid.
I got cheap and cocky and thought I'd get the better sequence
for much lower than the BIN of the other one.
Well in the end, the one I went for w/ the low opening bid
BLEW PAST the other one's BIN and the BIN one
ended w/ NO bidders.
I waited patiently, hoping it'd get relisted but it never was.
Now I'd pay 2ice the amount if I could get a 2nd stab at it.

The other regret was a Shampoo hanken from the LD/VHS
that was at Mandarake's store.
I was informed by a fellow Rs'er that it was available.
So I quickly e-mailed a cntact there to buy it and ship it to me.
Unfortunately my e-mail got there 2 hrs late
and someone had just purchased it.
>_<
Can you imagine?!?! Two flippin hours! Had the guy/girl going to Mandy
been a few hrs late it could have been mine.
Gaaah.. I must have moped for weeks about it.
Still a lil sad whenever I see the image.

I know that cel-senpai's stomach-churner is a certain shikishi that was
auctioned at SakuraK '09. Had our phone message been
picked up we might have had a chance.
I think to this day he is still depressed at not having had a shot at it
or knowing where it is so he can visit it. We jut have the picture
on our laptop for now .It would be nice to know if
its still in the U.S. or gone someone overseas.
Funny enough we almost made it to the con too had it not
been for last min crap at work that made us cancel plans.
Oh well! What can ya do ne?

I can't think of any big regrets I still have. Sure the Midori no Hibi and the Kanon 2002 sketches would have been nice. The Maison Ikkoku cels I missed would have been good too, but they're not a big deal to me anymore.

This is the biggest regret I could find from what I could dig up. I wish I had bid on these:

Would have been nice to have, but I already have sketches from it so I'm not pulling my hair out about it or anything.

Wow ReiTheJelly those are magnificent cels no wonder you were sad to miss them :l I love them and I'm not even a massive fan of that anime. Still I've seen you collection of cels from it and I have to say you've got some beauties of your own so I wouldn't feel too bad! 8)

I do know who owns the sketch set that I regret losing, and I have approached the person with a cash offer and a trade offer. The other party has declined, which I don't at all find discourteous, as the set is an international treasure and well worth hanging onto.

It's the set of gengas that worked out the moment when Syaoran finally says "I love you" to Sakura, at the end of Episode 69 of CCS. The set sold on YJ shortly before I came along, evidently without much fanfare. In fact, the original North American owner thought s/he was bidding on only one sketch and was very surprised to find the whole set in the bag.

They were resold on eBay about six months later. I was watching from the start, was high bidder for a long time, and then at the last second I was ready to up my bid dramatically to fight off any last snipers.

Unfortunately, I'd changed my password the week before, and in my nervousness, when I bid, I entered the old password. The bid didn't go through, and, yes, someone else entered a snipe bid at the last second. (I don't know if that was the present owner or not: no matter, it was my lack of presence that lost the contest.)

I did get partial compensation years later by nabbing the roughs from the same sketch set when they came up, again with no particular fanfare, on YJ.

But from then on I've always double-checked to make sure that I'm logged in and ready to bid long before the ending time of the auction.

Yes, I was sad to miss out on those cels. But you're absolutely right - I adore my current Miyuki-chan collection and am very content with what I have been able to acquire. In fact, I just purchased a new cel this week -- first one from that series in six months!

The one auction I'm still really kicking myself for is an auction for sketches from final fantasy 9 about two years ago. I put a small starting bid on it and decided to try and snipe early the next morning and ending up sleeping in instead X|
The set had several of the characters but the one that really upsets me is the profile of Zidane included. Since then I've only seen one other auction at all for this series, and the price was sky high

I didn’t save a pic of the real cel, so I’m gonna have to show a crappy screencap, but it was from this bit of episode 3 of Weiss Kreuz:

Image

Back when I first started collecting there was someone on rubberslug who had a really fabulous collection of Weiss cels. I don’t remember the gallery or member’s name, but their banner had the Gakken Mook artbook pic of the Weiss boys at the beach, if I remember correctly. Anyway, probably in 2003 or 2004 they liquidated their collection and closed their gallery (I think. Maybe they just switched the focus of their collection and did an overhaul. I think they left the hobby though.)

I would have really liked to buy their cel of Yohji with Asuka (I think it had the original matching background too, but maybe it was just a color copy, I’m not sure anymore,) and I thought the price they were asking was pretty reasonable. Unfortunately I was a jobless college student at the time and simply couldn’t afford it, reasonable or not. I never saw it show up in anyone else’s gallery so I sometimes wonder where it ended up. Wish I’d had the funds back then!! Although I wish I just knew where it was. It'd be nice to still be able to look at, even if I couldn't buy it.

You know I feel you pain about the miyuki-chan pan cel Rei! We bid a couple thousand and that was still not enough to get her or even be the runner up:(

My biggest regret is when my absolute top wishlist cel from Kite was available on YJ, but I saw the auction late and I had a smaller bidding limit at the time. I tried to raise my bidding limit, but the deputy was too slow so I missed it by about $50 :l The current owner doesn't want to sell even though I've offered 3x what it sold for. :( I've learned to keep a bidding limit higher than I think I should have as a precaution against such things.

Hmmm...I can't find the sticky-note that I had the user ID and final price written on, but I think it went for about $3500. Perhaps Ashenfairy's memory is better than mine on this subject?

Ace can't wait to see what you've got. Didn't you also have a cel of the other Rose girl that would have accompanied the one you put up?
