What is this paper product?

Post by klet »

Okay, so I had a lot of paper products that came with my Slayers cel I got in the mail today. You know, the usual--dougas, layouts, and the timing sheet. But underneath all this was taped another . . . ummm . . . thing.

Image

It was folded in half with the picture on the inside. On the outside was the following:

Image

Now, all those squiggles are just indentifying the series it came with (Slayers) and the cut and episode numbers for the cel.

Now, what the heck is this? It's a photocopy . . . so is it just random scrap paper the studio used to keep all of the pieces together? /hmm If so, is that wolf from Slayers? It's been a while since I've seen the series, and I'm not about to remember nameless bad guys. Besides, he looks a little too detailed for a Slayers nameless bad guy. So, where is he from? Any clues?

The text next to the picture reads "murasaki uroko no ookami" or "purple-scale (scale as in fish scales) wolf."

Cool. I've had numerous pieces of 'studio scrap' with my Cuts/setups and it's common to see such pieces with [colour] test sheets and other pre production material.
for example, I have colour model sheets that have been photocopied on the reverse of old storyboards.
I wonder if this is the same principle? I'm afraid I can't ID the character.

As you suggest, Klet, it's probable that this page was merely used to contain your 'proper' set together.

From what I have seen alot of animation studios recycle papers.

It may be a rejected sketch of a character that they used as a marker for identifing the series & episode # the cel you recieved came from.

I have recieved simular scraps in with cuts of genga's from other series.

I'm pretty confident he's not from Slayers ---

but what he is, is really cool! That would be a fun thing to do some CG work with :D

Thanks for the input, guys. I also took the time to translate the stamp on the back (second picture w/ the squiggles), and think I might have discovered something really cool! :bounce

Here are what the three sections of the stamp say:

Top:

3 X 3+
3 号台

Middle:

'95, 7, 25

Bottom:

撮済

The bottom is pronouced "satsusumi" and means "finished photography." So, I think that the filming of this particular cut was on 7/25/95. :D The top I'm not too sure of, but it might be the label for the camera that was used. The first kanji in the top part means number, and the second is the counter for machines.

It makes sense that the studio would have to have a way to keep it all together, because from what I understand, they outsource some of their work to inferior studios, so they really need to stay organized.

I'd still like to know where the wolf comes from; is he from another show? Or a rejected doodle? Ah, well. This is still pretty cool. :)

I have no idea how to do CG work. X| But if you want to shoot me your email, I'll try to flatten him, get a better scan, and send you the full image to goof around with.

Yes, it sure is. Even more so now that I know how to use the handwriting tool on Word so I don't have to look up kanji in a dictionary anymore. It's so much faster to write them!! Plus, I now know how to put the furigana on the words, so I don't have to guess on the pronounciation. :D

Maybe he's from the anime "3 x 3 Eyes"?
Series titles are often abbreviated to shorter names, 3x3 would be used in this instance. On the studio evelopes I have for cel Cuts from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, they're always shortened to just "JOJO" followed by the episode number, ie #3, with that hash symbol.

Your sheet definately indicates the wolf is from Episode 21, Cut 82.
From this you know that the series is a 26+ parter. It's an early cut so you should see this wolf in an early sequence. I think most episodes have about 400-500 cuts on average.

Thinking about it, it's probably not 3x3 Eyes because I think that was a fairly short OVA, 3-6 episodes?...

The mystery continues!
Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

Yes the mystery continues for I can verify it's not from SazanEyes (3X3eyes) which was 2 stories one with 3 episodes and the other 4 episodes OVA's nor does such a character show up in the manga so far.

Actually, that's the cut information for my Slayers cel and layouts that this came with. It says Slayers on the back there, too. The background was used for cut 75 and 79. Since the stamp is on the opposite side as the wolf, I assume it has to do with the Slayers cel, not the wolf. :shrug

Yep, the mystery continues! :D

I think it is random monster from episode 20 or 21 of the first series, when the series was chimera-happy. This character lunges at Amelia, and she blows him up by throwing a powerful spell into his mouth. I remember it being episode 20, the episode with Rahanamu, but since it says 21, I could be wrong.

As to what the sketch is... storyboard or character concept rough, maybe?

Wow! Thanks Karen. :)

Actually, I just saw a cel of this character up on Ebay along with a Gourry cel, but the seller didn't make it clear whether the wolf was from Slayers or not. I was thinking of going for it anyway, and selling off the Gourry cel. Do you guys think that's a little weird or what? :emb

Not weird at all in my book... but expect a bit of competition ^^; I'm trying to get one of every slayers character; getting closer :-)

Good luck to us both,

wow... well I guess you can tell how long it's been since I've watched my Slayers discs... Dilgear was the only wolf-like thing I could remember and that's definitely not him. Random wolfishness, hmm? Interesting!

later: went to look at the cels and yes! color brings the recollection back.
That Gourry cel looks like he's standing in front of the cart that Amelia has to drag all over the place, yes? or has Alzheimers definitely taken hold?
