What is this show?

Post by Celtyrant »

A friend of mine got a whole bunch of very old film cels. He only knows that they are vintage, like as old as Fantasia, but that its definitely not Disney. Does anyone recognize this character? The film cels seem to depict him with sword and shield, and there is a monster with tentacles.

For some reason my brain keeps telling me "Fern Gully."

And I have no idea why, as I've never seen Fern Gully... but it sure looks like one of those odd little guys...

Definitely not fern gully and definitely not Fantasia. This character is the main character, since he appears in all the segments.

Is it American animation? I thought I saw that design on some Korean cartoons but I could be wrong. I hope you find out where he is from.

Not sure where its from. Its /probably/ American, seeing as its widescreen, and I don't think Korea started doing animations like this so early that they would be on the bigscreen. It might not be a feature film. It could be a short, but it was definitely shown on the big screen.

Winds of Change

Post by Drakonia »

Hey Celtyrant, 8)

I remember watching that particular cartoon in my teen's and I think that I found what you are looking for:

American Name: Winds of Change

Hoshi No Orpheus
Sanrio Films (1978) 95 minutes

Most of these stories were focused on Greek mythology and the underworld.

I actually have a cel from that cartoon yet to be scanned, but I haven't posted it yet. I hope this helps.

Best, ~K :D

Thanks, with your information I found a site that lists all the animations. And I was able to pinpoint the time a little later, and here's what I think it is.

METAMORPHOSES (5/3/78) Sanrio (U.S.-Japan) 89 mins. D: Takashi. Five Greek myths are intergrated into one storyline, set to music, unified by a small character (Wondermaker). Released in Los Angeles May 1978, then withdrawn, recut to 82 minutes, with Norman Corwin writing and providing narration, and released as WINDS OF CHANGE in May, 1979.
