this has been in my collection for a while now and i was looking at it the other day and i'd like to know what her speech bubble says, if anyone could help that would be great, i supose it's be nice to know what the rest says also.....but mostly the speech bubble

I can't read the very bottom line on the scan - too fuzzy for me.

"A....Arigato-nya" is what the character is saying("Nya" is the sound a cat makes in Japanese).

I was thinking the the circle was supposed to be the katakana character "ro", but, even then..."Barasuiro"...I don't know what that means. Maybe it's supposed to be a paw print? Perhaps an artist name...? Like the last name being "Bara" and the first being "Sui" or "Suiro", depending on what the circle is supposed to be.

I'm having a hard time reading the last line because it is so small. Any way to get an enlargement of that portion of the scan?

Not exactly sure of the best translation since I'm not sure if he's talking about himself or the character, but I would probably assume the second. The character in parenthesis is the character for a smile or laugh. They use it the same way we use the emoticon

It's from a rough, or layout correction, from a scene in the Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, for which Fujita was one of the animation directors. It's rather faint on the original sketch, but I've darkened it digitally to make it easier to read.

The second line is pretty clear: "Onegai shimasu," or "Please."

The first line I think reads "Youshiku" plus two decorative stars. "Youshiki" means "mode, style, form" according to my Langenscheidt's, and so I'm guessing this is an instruction to the genga artist working up this scene to "Follow this way of drawing the scene, please." Which would make sense, given the place of roughs in the animation process.

Can anyone confirm or put me straight if I'm on the wrong track?

Looks like I'll have a reopening sometime around March 1 with some new visual tricks.

It says 'Yoroshiku (insert 2 stars) Onegai shimasu' which means something like 'please help with this'. If there's follow-up action then your guess on what the artist is trying to convey to the next artist is probably right. It is also like thanking him/her in advance.

It's a very humble expression, typical of Asian cultures, and hard to translate directly in English. Often, in formal introductions b/w people, they will say 'dozou yoroshiku onegaishimasu' too...it's something like 'please enlighten my humble self' which is a very polite way of saying 'Nice to meet you'.

It just says, "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" - nothing specifically related to animation. I have several stamps and lots of stickers that say the same thing. the phrase is used when you meet someone, not necessarily for the first time. You also use it when someone does you a favor. it's actually a tough phrase to translate accurately. sometimes it means "nice to meet you". sometimes it has a more submissive tone if you're saying it to someone above you. Honestly, it's one of the most useful and used phrases in Japanese. You say it all the time.

That makes a great deal of sense out of both the little cartoon figure of the monkey greeting the bird chick and also out of its use at the end of sets of layout corrections.
