CCS Omake Ep. 3 -- cel-based or CGI?

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

CCS Omake Ep. 3 -- cel-based or CGI?

Post by sensei »

All 70 episodes and both movies of the "regular" CCS saga were cel-based, but what about the three "omake" episodes that were provided as extras on the DVD releases? (These are sometimes known as "Tomoyo's Video Diary 1, 2, and 3")

I have seen cels for the first one (behind the scenes as Tomoyo supervises the filming of the OP 1) and for the second one (Sakura uses The Move to keep Kero-chan from eating the Decoration Cake she made).

But has anyone ever seen a cel from the third omake (in which it's explained that whenever Yamazaki opens his eyes, what he says, for a change, will be the truth)? I've thought from the start that the look of the characters was just a bit different from all the other CCS productions, and I've never seen any cels from it, though a bunch of gengas showed up recently on Mandarake.

So I'm suspecting that this little 4 1/2 minute "extra" was done CGI, like Angelic Layer and Chobits, which were already in the works at Madhouse. Does anyone know for sure?

In case anyone needs to see what I'm talking about, a dub of this omake has been uploaded to YouTube:

I've seen two cels from Tomoyo's third Diary installment.

The first is in the Sakura Bunnies gallery and is of Chiharu and Yamazaki:

The second is one that I picked up at AX this year and is one of the four pan cels featured in the third installment. What is interesting about the one I own is that it consists of two layers. The bottom layer actually shows Yamazaki's eyes open. However, a correction layer was made for Yamazaki's face so that his eyes would appear closed.

Thank you, Cutiebunny! Unless I'm mistaken, your cel might be from the scene where Chiharu steps on his foot over and over and makes his eyes pop open and closed again.

I've seen nothing but Omake cels. Never sketches. I bet Craig would be the best person to ask though.

Cutiebunny has it correct. There are cels from the episode and like the observation that was made, there were recently genga up on the Mandarake site. I think that these cels were harder to distinguish from TV episode cels, so some have come and gone on YHJ.
