Watermarking

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

I watermark the majority of my items. I block the use of "right clicking" on my gallery as well. I also upload screenshots of most of my images to large anime image sites.

So, I suppose you could say that I do go to some length to prevent image theft.

Yes, I realize that my images could be stolen and put up on different sites all over the internet. But, someone would have to spend time(and possibly money on software) to do t hat. Most people that steal images are looking for an easy target; Watermarking helps prevent that.

I watermark for several reasons. The first is that I work hard for my overtime funds that I fuel into cel collecting. Seeing someone take my images and claim them as their own leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The second is that, should I see a scan of one of my items in a place where I don't want it, I now have recourse to contact said site and ask for them to delete the scan. Of course, they don't have to do it, but, if they refuse, I can always contact their host provider and explain the problem.

All in all, I think it's worked. I've done several searches of images on the internet and none of my cel scans are up.

I watermark my cels. I already had to design simple watermarks for my photographs, so why not do the same for my cels. I usually make them slightly transparent so that they are still noticeable but do not detract too much from the image. When I started out, I tried to make them so they would cover some of the edge paint. Now though, I just crop in and make them slightly transparent. I know some might end up floating around in the ether of the internet. At least if it is found on a random site, it will be able to point the person back to the original gallery. I know it's easy to print out the lineart and just make an intermediate from there, but at the same time I'd rather have a person have to work at it to get something "usable" than be given a free ride w/o any work.

I used to use them but didn't want to put it right over the image, b/c I don't like the way that looks *very distracting* so it was worthless anyway. I quit a long time ago, but have not rescanned my older cels which still have them. I'll have to do that someday.
