How big(kilobytes) do you make your rubberslug images?

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

my thumbnails are usually under 10 kb and .... umm... trying to remember how big my usual pics are...
never over a megabyte i know. i know that some people still have rotten dial up and it would take it forever to just download that (so they'd probably give up before they even saw my pretty cel). :l

Unfortunately my scanning/photoshoping Rubberslug/Tripod guideline sheet is back in Los Angeles so I am unable to answer the question properly. :(

But I try to keep the sizes down if I can.

Main images vary due to the amount of colour and complexity.
I use Photoshop's "Save For Web..." option with a quality setting of 50 [out of 100] which brings most images down to 40-80kb.

That's brilliant when you see the quality/clarity of the images, you might think the size would be a lot more.

An image will only be over 100kb in size if it's very detailed- or grubby! That's common with genga. It's a major reason why I clean up all my images before saving them, it reduces the file size considerably.

My thumbnails are around 10-20k and I *think* my average pics range from 100-200k depending on the size of the original scans of the cels.

I do remember off-hand that I try to make uniform sizes of pics [minus pan cels/sketches]. they average about 530*420 and i use one of those RS tools in the gallery setup that shrinks them and prevents clicking on the image.

I always put my thumbnail height at 165pixels and then save at around jpeg Photoshop level 6. Almost all my thumbs are around 25kb.
My main images vary wildly as I often put much larger images for cels I really like. Those are usually around 900pixels wide. I usually save them at PS level 8 or 9. There's very few that are above 100kb in size, and most are 60kb.

eh...I'm not very good with technical stuff like that ^^;
And I can't check since Rb is down...
But I forget the size of my thumbnails, but my cels are usually shrunk to ___ X 500 (500 long) and height I forget, but they are saved as GIFS...so they look their best....I want to have them not too big or small....
So I'll post again when Rb is up ^^

Now that I'm home I can check. :coffee:

I have my cel pictures saved in a "My Pictures" folder in these subfolders:

Cel Scans Altered (Rubberslug Size)
Cel Scans Altered (Tripod Size Thumbs)
Cel Scans Full Size
Cel Scans Larger Redone Tripod Thumbs
Cel Scans Seller Full Size
Cel Scans Seller Rubberslug
Cel Scans Seller Tripod thumbs

...so that everytime I burn my "My Pictures" folder to DVD I'm creating a backup of my cel scans.

Out of the 66 scanned pictures I did and then photoshopped for Rubberslug, 58 were cels and 8 were sketches:

1. Sixty four of my "530 X 392-428" larger size pictures were 77 kb or smaller. I had one that was 83 kb and one that was 84 kb (red scans come out poorly on my scanner so I had to increase the size).

2. Sixty four of my "150 X 114-120" Rubberslug thumbnail size pictures were 10.4 kb or smaller. One was 11.4 kb because of the red problem and another was 22.2 kb because I wasn't using the right photoshop setting to save it.

I went through about fifty cel and sketch scans saving each large and thumbnail photoshopped picture using "Save For Web" for qualities 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75. I flipped back and forth between the photos under a screen resolution of 800 X 600. My conclusion was that it was best for me to save cel/sketch photos at quality of "55".

Often I found a noticeable jump in quality between "50" and "55". Often I found a bigger quality jump between 50 to 55 than going 55 to 75. After doing these comparisons for about fifty pieces, I got tired of doing them and then just saved everything under "55" quality.

Eventually I got too lazy to scan so I only photoshopped seller's pictures. Then I got too lazy to even do that (besides me not wanting to post certain sketches). Lazy, lazy.
