Are you Collecting the Future, Why or Why Not? Relizu's
Rilezu can be absolutely incredible pieces of art; I enjoy looking at them in other people's galleries, and I've even bought a few of them in the past. BUT, because they are essentially nothing more than licensed merchandise, I've always classified them - along with my repros, figures, etc. - as anime memorabilia, in the broadest sense of the term. So while I may collect them, I don't even really consider them part of this hobby, much less its future.

Currently no... Much of the newer shows don't really interest me as much and when they do, I only want production artwork coz that's what fascinates me... So if I were going to buy one of them it would be rilezu that came with the production sketch.

Thank you Gonzai! That is very interesting and informative.Gonzai wrote:I emailed and said that the colors were off too much, and
asked if it could be re-made. They agreed, but this is what
he explained to me about the color problem:
As you say, paint color on the rilezu is brighter than the CG image.
I think that the production painted the brighter color to show the
image clear as the CG image is dark.
Basically the actual paint color for the CG color is determined along
with color code in actual color paint. Each color is indicated by
the color code number. The actual color paints by color code are
stable color, that is kinds of color are limited, so some CG colors
are not match to the actual color paint. In the case, the similar
actual paint is drawn on the rilezu.

So it is like a kind of film “processing”.. Starting with standard numerical colors, but then altering them with “lighting” and other effects… only digitally, inside the program data.
I think Madoka had a very good solution to dealing with this “too dark” issue (as well as the difference from the "stable" numerical colors) in one of GuyvarIII’s Basilisk Rilezu:
Painting the image first with the assigned colors:

Then adding a translucent painted second layer, to bring the image to a virtual approximation of the way it appeared on screen:

Of course, I think your Sa Sakujin cel turned out great, too

(especially with that right mood lighting!)
I disagree. Just take a quick waltz through my fan cel galleryirmgaard wrote: Fan cels do not have the look of these images, whether the materials or the artists are the reason for this, I do not know.![]()

I agree that there are a lot of fan cels out there that do not have the same look and feel. I think that's all determined by the artist, and somewhat of the materials used. Most fan cel artists use acrylic on acetate. This is different than what studios use. however, you can mix acylic to any color in existence...So, again, it comes all down to the fan cel artist themselves

In person... My Fate/Stay Night Relizu's are amazing...
But looking at the sketch numbers... I don't think the sketches are original.

I just wanted to add that repros aren't part of the "wave of the future". They've been around for a while. The oldest repro I know of is from 1995 but there could easily be older ones. Repros are made from both CG and cel series.
My extra two cents on rilezus is this. For every series you hear people complain about the coloring on their rilezus just remember, there are many series people love the final product. I've heard various complaints about Loveless and SaiMono. I've heard nothing but good stuff about DNAngel, Weiss Kreuz Gluhen, Kyo Kara Maou, Primo Passo, Ai Yori Aoshi, Ah My Goddess, Mirage of Blaze, Tactics, .hack//sign, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and Trinity Blood.
Collect them or don't collect them. It's all about what each individual wants. There's no right or wrong. Besides, if you don't collect them, it gives me more time to gather money for the ones I really want.

Definitely there are older ones. I know all three of series in the Robot Romance Trilogy by Tadao (1976-79) had reproduction cels. They are so old some mistake them for production cels.duotrouble wrote:I just wanted to add that repros aren't part of the "wave of the future". They've been around for a while. Saint Seiya has repros, too, and that series is pretty old.
I just plain can't afford Rilezus. Or rather, I could afford them if I didn't buy 4-20 other pieces of production art. So far, my biggest purchase was $150. I can't justify the prices.
As for repros, I do have some One Piece ones, but they tend to go for about $50 or so, depending on the image.

I'd buy Rilezus if they ever did them for shows I actually wanted to collect from.
I'd kill for a Honey and Clover rilezu, for example (or even a repro, come to think of it). I wouldn't really consider it a proper 'cel' though. It's a pretty piece of merchandise, but it's different to something that was used in the actual production of a show, IMHO.

Heh. Since this thread was active, I actually did buy a rilezu from a fellow Betarian -- predictably, one of the very limited Haibane Renmei items. However, I found the experience instructive. The sketch that came with it was obviously NOT an original douga. As another collector explained, it was a "clean-up sketch," made by the repro cel artist in preparation for making the cel. (For instance, the three original sequence numbers were written in the upper corner, but all together on one sketch rather than separately on three dougas.)
See my long but considered comment on this rilezu.
In general, I remain happy with the original production sketches rather than their "what-if-the-series-were-cel-based" distant cousins.
