Do you believe this hobby is dieing?

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

Is collecting cels/sketches a dieing hobby?

*glances at post count*

Am I not talking much? :sweatdrop
You're exceptional! :P

Personally, I know I'm not posting as much as I used to. There's some people I've known who have left, and others who are collecting but not posting (I seeeeeeee you!). It feels to me like there really are as many people stepping up to fill the void. *shrug* IMHO, of course.

I don't have a problem with it, either. But I'm never one to really start conversations, either online or in RL. I'd be happier if there were more of those posts, too. But they don't really call for discussion. There's only so much you can say about the difference between a genga and a douga. Once someone answers, the conversation is pretty dead.

I'm talking about questions that invite discussion rather than easy answers--questions that make pages of posts. Like this one (good job, EoP).

Heck, I'm not keeping track. I know there are some new people here since we've discussed certain things. Plus, opinions, collections, and lives change. I know up until about a year ago, there was no way I'd ever collect sketches. I had some in my gallery, but mostly because they were kind of freebies. But, then I discovered One Piece, fell in love with the show, and now have a rather large collection of rough genga, repros, fan cels, and original settei from it. I'm in the middle of splitting yet another lot of rough genga with bulleta (quite literally--we're going back and forth, deciding who gets what :D ). That's something that's changed about my collection.

Of course, maybe I'm becoming like my mother. She likes to tell stories, and she forgets if she's told you yet or not. So, I get to hear them quite a few times. :P I like telling stories, too, and sometimes I get a vague impression that I've said something similar in a similar post before, but I still talk. Maybe that's not entirely a virtue, though . . . :emb

I think viewpoints are affected by the way you collect and how you gain satisfaction from that method. It can also be affected by how you deal with other collectors and how they may be bothering or annoying you.

One collector might feel completely satisfied:

1. Hardly talking to other collectors.

2. Never talking about the items they've bought.

3. Buying only two to eight pieces of artwork per year.

4. Collecting from the same anime for eight to fifteen+ years.

Unfortunately I can't collect with the #3 and #4 method. The last couple years I've obtained more variety (although you would never know it because I'm too lazy to post), but when I'm not "busy" I feel bored and lackadaisical (hobbywise).

What I need to do is lower my expectations. If I only expect to see something "exciting" every 2-3 months I won't feel as bored.

We lost our spammers... Image That's what happened. lol....

We lost kittens, Tex-chan, Aernath, baakay, kymaera, etc.

And other high post count posters aren't posting as much either. Like Gonzai is gone this month... and we'll lose JWR next month... Image

Maybe we need to have a seminar on "Spamming 101" for the newer members? Image

I can volunteer on helping with that seminar. I have two Doctorate degrees in Spamming. Image

For example, I know that kittens, Aernath, and I all use around 2-5 emo-icons in every post....

So Lesson 1 is: Use atleast 3 Emo-icons in each post!!! Image

As for new members.... with some work... I think Moonrabbit could be a replacement for me! She already uses as many "...'s" as I do... lol!

Seems to be slowing a bit, but I don't think it's dieing. It has it's ups and downs still, but I notice that certain items are still highly competitive. Now whether the community as a whole is deteriorating I can't say, and if it is I'm probably not helping things (then again I never was big poster :P ).

Of course, those collectors were usually never vocal parts of the community to begin with.

Also, the hobby isn't dieing . . .

. . .

. . .

it may be dying, though. :P

Sorry. Just had to add my snark in there somewhere.

I feel bad, because I don't post here a whole lot. Sometimes not at all for weeks or months at a time. I guess in very small communities I don't have much "motivation" since there's only so many things I can respond to. Hope that makes sense X|
