How big(pixels) do you make your rubberslug images?

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

I make RS thumbnails around 150 X 116

I try to make the larger pics around 530 X 390 (if I started out with an original image of that size or bigger :emb )

I remember a long time ago when I used to follow Rubberslugs rules on image size

700 pixels for standard cels and 900 for movie sized (more or less) for all my newer scans that I am working on. I just donate more so I don't feel guilty for breaking the rules. You just can't see anything on a 530 wide image 8O

650 wide with variable height for standard sized cels. 700 to 750 wide for horizontal pans. Vertical pans are sparse in my gallery, so they're on a case-by-case basis. :D

I'm like Glorff: I just donate lots of $$ to Rubberslug to assuage my guilt.

I have a feeling the pixel size rules are to keep uniformity to the gallery layout. So if you have a banner that's their recommended size you don't start tiling it going across or have a large gap between banners... or whatever. So (if you care that your gallery does that) then you'll have to create your banner to "match" with what your gallery will do with a picture in it.

Some things to remember is if you are going to use larger image sizes than what is recommended and you plan to keep your gallery password protected, then you will need to take off the "Automatically Scale Images" in the My Account > Settings. If you won't keep you gallery password protected, then you can keep the auto-scale images, and then set the scaled image size.

One other thing to keep in mind is the monitor resolution of those people visiting your gallery. Its not uncommon for people to keep the standard resolution that their monitor is set at, or to just use a lower resolution than what a lot of other people do. As what is shown in this poll:

http://www.anime-beta.com/phpBB/viewtop ... resolution

The poll is very old, and another one should be done to get more accurate results. (Something I may just do once I'm done here b/c I am in the process of totally revamping my gallery.) But the point of the monitor resolution is that on the lower resolutions, it's annoying when there is a seemingly large banner that makes you scroll down 2 screens (but for the creator of the banner it's probably not that large) just to see anything, or when they click on an image to have to scroll down and/or over just to view it. Its likely to cause a lot fewer random people to visit your gallery.

One random brief thing to also keep in mind is that even if an image is saved at 300dpi or whatever, once its loaded onto RS, it's automatically going to go down to 72dpi. So its best to just save the files at 72dpi and save your HD space, as well as the space on the RS servers.

Whew that was long winded. I'm sorry if you knew this already Robo... but perhaps it could help anyone else out. Any questions or whatever feel free to send me a message.

No, no... That's very helpful! I don't know anything about Rubberslug... Image

So what width should I make it if I don't want Rubberslug to rescale my image? or do I not even have to worry because there isn't much image degredation?

Is 518 pixels normal width? Image

You can go to My Account > Settings

and one of the settings there allows to you to say if you want RS to auto scale your images or not... and if you want them to auto scale then they allow to specify what size to auto scale them at.

I think my images are between 400-500 wide, I just make sure to put my info below the image and not to the left. ^_^

Part of my revamping though will be to make larger images for viewing, at least from those that I still have original scans for. I cannot rescan items until I get my scanner replaced. =( poor thing is about 10+yrs old, and came free with a computer. Can't afford a new one though. =\

Yup you can. Just remember though that not everyone uses the same resolution as you, so your pictures will appear (physically) bigger on a smaller resolution... so if a someone has to do a lot of scrolling to see your images they may not come back to visit your gallery. Since post people want to just "click and look" not click "scroll, scroll look"

Also remember the byte size of the file too, since RS is a free site it's only considerate to try not to take up too much of their space with your images. ^_^

and you're welcome! :D

About 20-22 percent of my visitors still use 800 X 600 resolution.

Eventually I'll post larger pictures of everything even though I'm not particularly into using large pictures. :)

yeah i do the same thing (size wise and put my info below). having the info on the side is kinda odd when there's alot of text.

oh and my thumbs are about 100 - 150 wide. :)

How big should I make the main rubberslug image?
Rubberslug's answer:

What should my image dimensions be?
You can upload images of an size and have Rubberslug resize your images automatically by activating the Automatically Scale Images setting to "Yes" and selecting the desired size in Scaled Image Size under the Edit Gallery Settings option on your My Account page. We made a decision not to prohibit uploading of larger images so that people who like extra large scans can make them.

What should my image file size be?
There are currently no size restrictions on individual images, although this may change in the near future. A good suggestion for designing for all visitors would ensure that even your largest zoomed in images are less than 100k.

I think too that when you upload an image - at the top of that page it tells you dimensions. I've just followed RS's guidelines regardless of how many complaints I've received for small images. Hey, just be happy I'm displaying them. :^^:

i make my thumbnails 175 pixels in width.. no matter what.. so that way I dont have a pan cel that stretches out my page. i dont care if it is stretched out to make the page longer.... that is what the scroll bar is for..

As for cel size... i usually make them 1000 in width and just let photoshop adjust the other side for me.
