Watercolors peeling on shikishi

So I've had this shikishi for roughly 8 or so months and I've kept it in a closet the entire time. I decided to check on it today and parts of the watercolors are peeling of sorts. It's not serious in that it's coming off in strips but like dots. I haven't tried scraping it off and it hasn't really affected the look of the painting but I just want to make sure that there isn't something I can do to prevent future damage or whether it's just part of the aging process.
