Hey Elfstalker, it is funny that you mentioned about OP cels from Clamp. I just received my OP Cel from Magic Knight Rayearth.

As for the question, it really all depends on the image. There are times when I wanted a specific scene from the opening of a series and then they make an unexpected pose for a Hanken and I just want sooooooooo badly (sexy poses does wonders for me :D )

Hanken sketches were my choice. I just won one on YJ and it looks beautiful. I prefer these to OP artwork for 2 reasons:
1) It's drawn by the Animation Director or Director most of the time so you know that you're getting the best possible representation of the characters.

2) The level of detail is great and the composition is perfect- not a frame out of place ;) The sort of image you can proudly display and say "THIS is THE anime, it sums it all up".

I also have to say Hanken. While not owning any opening or hanken sketches, I do own several opening and hanken cels. The freedom that is allowed in the creation of hanken images compared to opening images is hard to compare. While it is nice to have a piece of the actual show, I do believe that Krafty summed up my opinion nicely.

If you were asking about cels, I'd go for the OP over the Hanken any day. But since you asked about sketches, I opt for the Hanken over the OP. I'm just strange that way. :)
Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

Oh I wouldn't say so DT, I feel the exact same way. Some of those Hanken sketches are breathtaking. 8) But there is nothing like an OP cel.

I wanted to read everyone's responses before I posted - I enjoyed seeing everyone's take and I was pleasantly surprised to see how different people think - It really depends on what the collector is collecting and why - Personally for me, I'll take OP any day over a Hanken just because (and it was echoed in previous posts) I collect from a series because I'm a fan of the production television series and the idea of owning something as rare as the opening scene from the show that I really dig and is what gets me. Not necessarily the artwork for me (although if it's well-drawn it's obviously a definite plus) but if it's a cool scene or something as rare as a nice OP that I have fond memories of watching along with people all over the world who have seen it before each and every episode - I'm probably all over it - I think it's cool that collectors out there though are interested in the artwork - if I were looking at it from that angle, I would have chosen Hanken obviously because since they're usually for posters or cards or games, it's a one-time shot where the picture has to be eye-catching and pretty -
