Collecting for reasons besides the anime
I was watching an episode of "Blade of the Immortal" when these thoughts popped in my mind:
How much artwork have you collected for reasons besides your enjoyment of the anime?
Maybe you liked the game, manga or novel (another source), but you didn't like the anime. Maybe you bought it just because you liked how the artwork looked. So you're not collecting them because you liked the anime.
I don't recall ever collecting artwork because I liked another source and not the anime, but it's not because I'm against collecting that way. It's because I rarely come in contact with other sources before I view an anime. I almost always see the anime first and then play the game or read the manga second.
On the other hand, I have bought a few pieces because I liked the artwork and not the anime. It's mainly because they were cheap though.

I usually read manga or play games first then watch anime..... But definitely I love some of anime artworks more than manga.
For example, RK Seisouhen and Tsuiokuhen. They are so pretty
There are some exceptions. Like Samurai Champloo and Mononoke, they are released as anime first and then someone published manga. I really prefer anime version of them including art styles. I really love the artstyle of mononoke. I think it is really pretty!

For me the quality of the artwork has been primary, followed closely by cheapness. I love getting something nice for a relative bargain. There have been several series that I have ordered only after I'd collected art from it, just to see what else went along with the art. In fact, there are a few that I never have gotten around to watching.
It's interesting: there are great animes with just OK art (thanks to a strong script and good voice acting) and great art with totally ridiculous plot/acting (the Rayearth OVA comes to mind).
I think in the end the quality of the studio and, more importantly, the influence of certain great animators/animation directors will in the long run have more of an impact on value than the overall quality of the series. But I could be wrong.

Hmmm... PMK comes to mind, followed closely by RK but I found RK anime first so... But yes PMK I liked manga better but eh the mangaka was unreliable and stalled it.
I know what you mean about blade of the immortal...

Now that I think about it....
All the series I like have a game....
Fate/Stay Night
Disgaea
Xenosaga
Utawarerumono
are some where the Games came before the anime...
But there are other series I collect from that started with the Anime then games came after! But usually those games aren't as good...

Sometimes a manga or game will get me started, but I almost always watch the anime also (most of the time before I start collecting a series
). Though there are several instances where I liked the manga or game far more than the anime, and I suppose if it was reliant solely on the anime I might rethink whether I purchase something or not.
A couple of examples of those I collect:
Spiral (manga)
Black Cat (manga)
Fruits Basket (manga)
Shining Tears X Wind (game)
Karin (manga)
These series are all good don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the anime that got me excited about them it was the manga or game. The anime's generally the only source of artwork though (that's not always the case, but for the most part
)

Hmm...I spent so much time writing the first post that I forgot to include this in my first post:
Anime artwork I got because I liked the artwork and not because I liked the anime:
Devadasy, Izumo TV series, Kaze no Stigma, Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo, Saint October, Soul Link, Tokyo Underground, W Wish and
Yoake Mae Yori Ruriiro na.

I only collect from a few series and I've read the manga for all of them. In most cases, the anime was overall on par with the manga. The most important thing is that the quality of the artwork must be decent.
I think I know why you thought of this when watching Blade of the Immortal.....the manga, in terms of artwork and storytelling, is awesome!

I've purchased several items from shows that I had not(and in some cases, still have not) seen. The few ones in my gallery right now are from Saber Marionette J, Tonde Buurin & Tenshi ni Narumon were purchased because I enjoyed the artwork. I also purchased over 20 'dollar bin' cels at various Mandarake during my recent trip to Japan simply because I thought the artwork was nice and the prices were cheaper than a lunch at work. I have no clue what anime the majority of these cels were used in.
It's a sad statement when I can purchase two nice cels for the price of a yakitori meal at the airport.
