Cashing in a cache of cels...

Post by Kero »

My mom and step dad are cleaning out his dad's house. They stumbled across this amazing stash of Disney production cels from the Sword in the Stone. Looks like 12 of them with a CoA. They look like they are in pristine condition. Boy, I would love to see them in person - I live about 1500 miles away! I don't know anything about Disney cels. From what I can see from a quick google search, these may be selling for $1500 or more each. They are beautiful close-ups (torso and head), mostly of Merlin with other characters, each with backgrounds.

Anyway, they need to have them sold so I need advice on dealers who deal with Disney and will sell the cels for them. Any suggestions?

Wow what a haul! Well the only dealers who I've dealt with who deal in Disney are Arttoons, who do sell on ebay so you can find and contact them that way. What prices they'd offer I don't know because I've never sold to em before. However I would suggest googling and I'm sure you'll find plenty of dealers out there. It may however be worth auctioning them since you may get more then what a dealer would offer you, since they'll try to knock about a third of the value in order to make a profit.

Here are a few other places that buy art:

http://vegalleries.com/
http://www.animationartgallery.com/

And I think this place will buy or auction art on your behalf:

http://www.mebstore.com/

I've only done business with Van Eaton Galleries and that was as a buyer though.

If they can, try to get them to hold off with selling them for a while. The market for selling right now is terrible. But, if you PM me, I may be able to help you with finding some companies to sell it for you.

maybe if they can hold on to them for a year or two (i know its long but the market is so bad itll probably take that long to recover).

Thanks everyone! I am just clueless both about selling cels (ha - I'm good at buying them though!) and in dealing with Disney cels. I advised my step dad to look at this thread and I offered to help him out with whatever I can on this. Star-phoenix mentioned that the market sucks - too bad that is true!! I don't know if they will sell right now or not.

I'll put in a plug for van eaton galleries-they've been very helpful and knowledgeable the times I've contacted them about American animation art.
