Actually the count of the cel galleries that I found was supposed to be 67. I don't know why I had 45 listed on an earlier draft, but the final figure I had listed for July 1998 was 67. I had compiled these figures here:

Cel Gallery Count (roughly):

July 15, 1998 - 67
March 18, 1999 - 104
September 28, 1999 - 163
November 3, 1999 - 182
December 8, 1999 - 193
January 12, 2000 - 205
May 18, 2000 - 241
July 18, 2000 - 275
November 8, 2000 - 320
October 15, 2002 - 700-720 (estimated)(includes several dozen unlisted on either Cels.Org or Rubberslug, but showing up in Google searches. Also includes people with more than one cel gallery)

The count might have been in the thirties in early/mid 1997. It was easy to visit everyone's cel gallery back then (all the known ones anyway).

Thinking about it, I launched my site in January 2000 so it's exactly 10 years old!!! I should have had a celebration! ^__^
Good work to everyone who has maintained an anime website since before the turn of the century!

This cross with the curve I made for my thesis with a +27% per year stable increase after some years in a linear progression. But your analysis does not include people resigning from the hobby, by cumulating both curves the real ratio of increase is only +3% per year.

Wow, reading that list of galleries takes me back. I used to frequent them like crazy and now I barely log in here to see what's going on. I think I started my gallery in 1999 -- on a fortunecity server and it seems to still be up. Moved to Rubberslug in 2005 I think.

Hi Jcaliff, haven't talked to you in a while! Good to see that you are still around. :)

I can tell you that the people who mentored me when I began was Queen Serenity (site is much reduced) and Christy at Christy's cels (site still up). I used to talk to a bunch of cel collectors on an IRC channel, but have fallen out of touch with them -- Keys, Trebuchet, oion/mappy, and several others:

Makes me all nostalgic and it wasn't that long ago! If anybody is around from the those days, drop me a line!

Hi Wendy!!! I always think about your They Were 11 collection. You know, the only cel I've ever sold I sold to you. :D Good to see you posting here.

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.
