ANN column on Cel Collecting

Post by jcaliff »

For those who haven't read it, this week's Mike Toole Show column on ANN is about cel collecting and his own cel collection:

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

Hehh. I was just coming on here to post about it. What did you think of his supplemental piece? I like the fact that he associated the artwork that he had and played the corresponding animation. It helps bring it all together for people. Its also nice to see his passion coming through. The only thing that made me cringe was when he said he removed paint from a CB cel when he separated cel and sketch 0.0

Nice article. It'd be nice if the article brought in some new collectors into the fold. :)

I give him kudos for talking about the hobby and, although not always correct, giving a basic idea of what collectors look for.

Some of us *do* like cels of characters with their eyes closed - especially if it's an important moment in the series.

However, I had a hard time watching him bare hand his cels. It wouldn't have been problematic if they were packaged inside cel bags, but, it looked like he was touching the cels without any kind of protection. I was in shock that he was talking about how the poor condition of his Rose of Versailles cel, touching it and its paint and lines with his bare hands.

(sigh) Hey...genius...do you think that all that touching of the cel might have some effect on it?

I realize that he probably paid a couple of bucks each for each cel so it's probably not a big loss for him. I know that he has every right to treat his property as he seems fit, but it seems like an oxymoron to say that you value something but then act as if you don't.

Yeah, that part made me pause a bit, especially when he was touching directly ont he image and in the middle of the cel. X|

But, none the less, an interesting video. :-)

Ha, the cels not being bagged - and the subsequent touching - was what jumped out at me too. :l

I was kinda hoping to see more Trigun art in the supplement. :emb

Reading the comments, it emphasizes the usefulness of outreach panels at conventions to provide information about cels/sketches, the animation process, and subsequent hobby.

i loved his end comment though,"if the directors from [put your show names here] are watching and ask you about this, please tell them i don't have these and i don't know what you're talking about." lol
