Share Your Most Popular Pieces

Post by KinoLRB »

I don’t know about everyone else, but whenever I click into rubberslug, after admiring the latest updates, I head over into the “Popular Items” section on my profile. I’m sometimes amazed at the number of views on certain items. It can be an intriguing window into what’s popular. While I would never judge the value of my cels based on the number of views they get, it’s cool to know that others enjoy looking them as much as you do.

So, what 3 items have the most views in your gallery?

My top three, in order:

http://celluloidcentral.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=370293
http://celluloidcentral.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=370297
http://celluloidcentral.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=371735

Also, what item(s) surprised you in the number of views they got—either positive or negative?

http://celluloidcentral.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=375647

In general, my anime cels have gotten more attention than those from American cartoons, despite their great colors and personality. This cel of Spunky from Rocko's Modern Life, though, accumulated a lot of views pretty quickly.

At one point, this cel of the fabulous Aeon had a secret admirer. It went from being near the bottom of the list to being one of the most popular, accumulating more than 100 views in just a few days. Someone loves it, and I’m flattered! :)

Fun topic!

Here are my three most popular:

My first Sanzo sketch (Saiyuki)
Holy Grail Cel (Weiss Kreuz)
Hiro Repro Cel (Gravitation)

The most surprising thing about numbers of views, to me, is the fact that this particular Sanzo sketch ranks as the item with the most views in my gallery. I mean, I love the sketch. But it's nothing spectacular or anything. And it's always struck me as the kind of image to which only I would be attracted. Plus, I don't think Saiyuki is a very popular show any more. Probably nothing in my gallery is from a "popular" show now-a-days, come to think of it -- ha, ha! Anyhow, the Sanzo sketch has always puzzled me. :hitting:

Also, even though my gallery has a decent number of hits, overall (in spite of being in "hibernation mode" for quite a long while), none of my cels have all that many individual hits. I think the most popular one has a little over 1800. I'm not sure what to make of that, but perhaps people just like looking at the thumbnails without clicking on anything individually. :shrug

One item of weirdness with RS hit counter since Jason rebuilt the site involves the "popular tag's" search. You click on a title and it such as Saiyuki and it brings up the gallerys that have artwork from the show in the order of the most artwork displayed. When that screen pops up it show 3 examples from each gallery. I suspect that the system counts those "displays" as actual hits or views.

I know my "hit counter" shows my top 3 viewed are the ones that show up when one clicks on the Ranma 1/2 link and I know one of those shown is no way more popular than the AMG Hankens that show in 4th - 6th place.

I love this topic when it comes up because it really goes to show that the longer you have a piece the more hits it gets it becomes one of your top viewed items. The you will occasionally run into something that starts shooting up, and mostly it is because someone has become an admirer of your piece and wants to look at it everyday! :)

So without further ado!

1. http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... emID=90101 Obviously LOL
2. http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=251101 I'm not sure why... I animated it?
3. http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... emID=69434 I think because this was one if my first Yukitos...

It's funny you look at this and your like she only collects CCS! Well not really...

This cel I had the background commissioned because honestly it makes the cel, it recently started skyrocketing and should hit the popular items list soon!

http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=364063

I also have a ton of recently purchased DBZ that has been sitting around all quiet like, I also picked up my second Princess Serenity the first I sold years ago to my sadness :( and it has very few views...

As for they way rubberslug works the gallery listing is sorted by most views, so the more cels you have generally the more views you will have!

When I came back after a hiatus a few months back I was astonished to find myself on page 2 of the gallery listing for CCS!

Have fun!

This sketch of two minor villains from Inuyasha is by far the most popular item in my collection and has been for some years. It is a rather good image of the two, and so I'd guess there is a link on some IY fan page or wiki that leads to it, resulting in a surprising large number of hits (7523 as of today, more than some deserving and well-curated galleries on RS ever get).

This cel of [Cardcaptor] Sakura doing her signature summoning ritual without benefit of clothing is #2. As it's given the red curtains treatment in the thumbnails part of the gallery, it gets clicked on pretty often by curious visitors, as does this one. Both are part of the notorious "Nude Bank," created by Madhouse in case they needed to save time by having just the battle costume painted on cels and using these as the bottom layers. So far as I know, the only time a Nude Bank ever did get used was in the Second Movie: Rallihir has a two-layer set of Sakura in her final outfit, costume on one layer and naked Sakura on the other.

And this cel of a sweatdropping Sakura from the Big (aka Dragonslayer) adventure is #3. It was once desired by another CCS collector who was obsessed by this episode and at one time attempted to own every surviving cel/sketch he could find from it. On his website he gave a link to this cel as one he devoutly longed for, but I have not heard from him or seen him in action lately. (He used to bid extravagantly for CCS Ep. 1 cels, trying to block me in the hopes that he would eventually hold enough from this Ep. that I'd give in and trade him said cel, which I might have done had he been less of a nuisance.)

Other oddly popular items:

A facsimile genga from Mushishi. #4 at present. My autograph sketches from the same show don't have nearly as many hits. (But it is a lovely image...)

A genga from Saiyuki Requiem of Son Goku about to chow down. #19 at present. A funny moment, but why this one image and none of the others from the same cut, all of which have 2000 fewer hits?

A rather plain image of Kaoru [the "normal schoolgirl" avatar of Buttercup] in Powerpuff Girls Z. #21 at present. This gallery gets a surprising number of hits, being one of the few places in which art from this series (a hit in a number of countries) is visible. But this one seems to get a number of visits disproportionate to its importance and quality. A more viable member of my top 50 is this one of Bubbles in the often-used entrance bank.

Interesting issue.

My Rubbberslug Most Popular Item page looks like this. My gallery has just about always been closed so the counts are low:
Image

The Shielle Messsiah Tokyo Underground sketch still rules the day. Words Worth cels are second and third. The naked Dokuro from Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan is fourth. My first cel from 1997, the Ryoko/Tenchi cel is fifth. Yui from Doukyuusei 2 is sixth.

Tina the alien from Kakyuusei TV series jumps up to seventh. There aren't too many good cels of her I guess because she only appears in one episode. The Kannaduki no Miko sketch drops to seventh and the Aoi Opening cel from Tenkousei drops to eighth place. Tohru and Mizuho from Elf ban Kakyuusei is ninth and the Tamaki Kakyuusei 2 sketch is tenth.

If I recall, the first 3 on this list are actually linked on Tumblr somewhere and henceforth that's why the images have such high click-ratios. I would delete the link and start over; but, it is not feasible at this time. They are (in this order):

Sailor Moon in Tentacles: http://gag.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=160147 (2459 hits...woah creepy)
Classic Sailor Moon Silloute: http://gag.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=155090 (1460 hits)
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, Takeru's True Form: http://gag.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=226854 (1248 hits)

We have admirer(s.) Just visited there a few weeks ago and saw that alot of us are getting good exposure and credit over there at Anipike for various genres of cels and genga. Some of my, not a large astronomical amount, click-ratios can also be attributed to Anipike. They cited and credited me for some genga and cels on display back around 2010-ish. (Thank you Anipike admirer where-ever you are! You are appreciated.)

A surprising amount of hits are coming from 1 sketch of the Oaksuer from Godannar at 551 to date. It is the only sketch in that entire section with the most hits. http://gag.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=280539

Lastly and also, the cel that I purchased several years ago and never received, hit count 512: http://gag.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=279424

To date, despite my sporatic updates, only the Godannar and Spice & Wolf genga, along with Mistress cels, overall get the most click-ratios. Newer series added to the gallery do not do well. Might be due to lack of exposure to the RS search engine? Not sure. :shrug

Ginga-- that's really sad that an essentially stolen cel is one of your most popular pieces. It certainly doesn't help to forget the whole experience, either... I'd hope that it's because people want to help you find it, though! I actually tried a google search of that image, but I think it's just a screen cap, right? :( I hope it's returned to you someday!

Anyway, it's really interesting to see what are the top items in my gallery. Some I can understand, but others? A complete surprise! lol

#1: B't X Neo - The Final Blow
This is a pretty nice shot, but I never would have imagined it to be #1! This is the final blow that B't Madonna receives while trying to save her counterpart donor, MetalFace. This is one of the many scenes in the OVA that always gets me. :bawl

#2: Samurai Troopers - The Last Strike
Other than these top two sort of sharing the same theme, I'm not all that surprised that this one made it into the top three. This is the last strikes that Ryo takes in the onslaught by the armorless Mukara. He could have easily fought back, but realizing that this is exactly what his armor wants him to do (to fight, kill, destroy...), he refuses to let it control him...and gets wasted in the process. Poor boy.

#3: Gulkeeva - Crossed Swords
This is another surprise for me. Gulkeeva is a relatively unknown series by Sunrise back in 1995. Some really amazing cels from it were available some 15 years or so ago, but they've all seemed to disappear since then. The character designer is Hirai Hisashi, as you might have recognised his work especially from Gundam Seed or s-CRY-ed before that. Anyway, this particular cel is from the opening sequence in which it depicts the one-on-one battle between the main protagonist and antagonist, Touya and Lem, respectively. Although the art on this one is pretty lacking (lots of line fading and other problems), I like this shot the most because... these two characters never actually physically fight each other. This is the only instance in which you will ever see them engaged in battle. This *could* be because the series was cancelled after only one season even though the last episode had a pretty obvious cliffhanger that would lead into the next season. Pretty sad.

The item that I thought would have been higher on the popularity chart was the Generator Gawl OP set of both White and Black wings. The white one comes in at #10 with the black following at #18. And for something like this fan cel to beat it in 4th place...??? I'm really shocked.

yes, that is very sad Rekka! Lol. all I have left is that screen cap of it. that experience made me a wiser business person and changed the way I conduct business when selling or buying cels. I had intended to sue the seller. but I found out the reason why I never got it after doing some research online about the seller. I took the loss and filed a police report in economic crimes. That's all I could do.

I'm a generous person in general. I definitely learned my lesson a long time ago.
