I have bought many cels from series I have not seen. All I have attempted to find and buy the dvd's later when they came out though some I still have not found.

Sometimes it's better to take a chance on an image you find before the series becomes popular and the prices skyrocket.

I've often bought cels or sketches from movies or series that I haven't seen, on the strength of their artistic quality alone. Heck, the amount of Saiyuki I've ever watched is no longer than the average NFL game, including halftime show and post-game wrap-up. But I think the art is a knock-out and a continuing incentive to actually sit down and watch a big chunk of it.

And nobody's been able to watch more than a few snippets of Tonde Buurin lately: it's never been released in any form in this country. Yet the cels are irresistable.

Yes, the cels/sketches that are from series that I have watched are the more special because I know the narrative context in which they fit. But I've never let ignorance get in the way of my solar plexus when I'm bidding.

It's rare as that's one of the ways that I keep my spending in check..by not
buying cels (or figures) from series that I haven't seen unless I really like
them or they're really cheap. Though, that does come back to bite me later
sometimes as I'll find out that I like the series after the item's gone.

Between enjoying Yoshihiro Togashi's other work and hearing rave reviews from fans, I just knew that I was going to love HxH - so even before I had a chance to watch it, I bought a couple of cels that I really liked the look of. I bought a few more after I started watching it. About forty episodes later, I was bored out of my mind, telling myself that it had to get better... really had to get better...

Dumb. There is so much fabulous artwork out there that I truly want, I will never make the mistake of buying a cel from a series that I haven't seen - at least to current episodes or near completion - again.

I am among the minority (according to the poll). I have not bought any cel/sketch from a series that I haven't seen let alone a ton of series that I do like. I have seen several cels on ebay in the past month from a series I have never seen, the cels were very colorful and fantastic but in the end I decided not to bid. Not because the price was out of my reach (it wasnt) its just it really comes down to "Why do I collect to begin with"? Some may answer this question by stating there love for the art and the vivid colors etc. For me this is not the case. I collect first and foremost not because of the "art" but rather where the art is coming from. The series I collect is because they mean something to me beyond normal shows. I am not a rich art old (or young) individal who has a large sum of cash to throw around thus the pieces I collect are important to me far beyond the physical appeal. When I know I have a sketch of an awesome scene (Like my pan when Yoko just noticed that she is not in Japan anymore but a new world) Is just amazing that I own that shot. The vivid colors and art is a fantastic plus but the main reason I get it is because I know where its from. I guess thats the main reason, If i dont know where it comes from and if that scene doesn't hold anything dear to me (in most cases) I can't get myself to purchase it. Because of this I can never see myself buying art from a show I haven't seen. It simply doesn't offer the same connection. Sorry for the long winded post 8)

While I haven't bought a cel from a show I haven't seen, I have bought sketches from a show that, at the time, I hadn't seen. This would be the Rozen Maiden studio copy douga that I purchase a while ago. At the time of purchase, I had only read the first 2 manga books.

Hmm... I just won a cel from a show I haven't seen yet. It's from Boogiepop Phantom.
As I said in the description for it though, I blame it on Shampoo. She's got such great cels from the show, that I've been keeping half an eye out for a nice one to come along. And I lucked out. :)

The question was asked: Why do I collect?
It's easy for me, and not really tied down to one show: I likes the boys! :D The snarky, inyourface, kickarse, harboring a touch of goodness deep in their hearts boys/men! :bny
As a result, I often fall into that "Oooo! Pretty!" purchaser niche.
And it suits me just fine.

But then again, most of the ones from shows I haven't seen yet, I got for the opening bid, so I'm guessing I'm not harboring any wishlist cels from anyone.

Now, step into my parlor! when it comes to Ichigo or sometimes Ranma. :P I will often do whatever it takes to get that shiny Ichigo. :bny

What was the question? I got lost again. <.<

I have bought a few cels and sketches from shows I haven't seen, but not very many and I think they were all inexpensive.

It doesn't bother me when people buy from anime I'm currently collecting from and yet I know they haven't seen it. It happens so rarely with me anyway. If I see a deputy bidder at the top near the end of an auction it surprises me more than anything else. It makes me I wonder who they are (especially if they ended up winning).

Over the years I've discovered that it's best to concentrate on items from my top favorite anime. My money is too limited to buy from all the anime I like. Buying items that are as high as are possibly available on my Wantlist increases the likelihood of satisfaction long term. :D

I collect mainly for the connection I have to the characters, the emotions imparted in the scene and the anime. Collecting for "overall art quality" is a very low motivation on my part. So if I bought items from anime I haven't seen I would only be gambling.

Sometimes if I find an artwork for sale that catches my eye I'll try to watch the anime to see how much I like it.

Funny....HxH is the only series I have bought a cel of before I had seen the series. Fortunately, I did like the series *mostly b/c of Killua*and have purchased several cels afterward. I agree that I would probably not do it again. I have even limited my cels buying from a series that I like, but did not feel the need to watch over again. It's a way of not buying so many.
