An interesting topic... seems many of us have different reasons.
Ms. Poe wrote:No one ever seemed to of cared if I posted an update on here or not...so I just stopped. Not worth the breath I guess.
No, I'm sure most of us did care but we're not always vocal about our appreciation. To write congratulation messages to everyone takes a long time and although it's perhaps deserved, it's not practical.
I like to email friends on occasions to acknowledge particular updates and stay in touch and I feel this is often a better way to do things than on a public board where it can appear like 'sucking up' to people or even appear false if it's done often.

I used to make Update threads every couple of months when I made a substantial addition but I don't upload much nowadays because of time restraints, other interests and not feeling in the mood for it. I also agree with what GrayMouser says:
graymouser wrote:Most of the time, I update only 1-2 cels at a time. It doesn't seem worth the trouble to make an announcement for so few...
Keropi's post is clever, keeping a low profile can be beneficial- your images are less likely to be nabbed and you will attract less conflict from inconsiderate people who may begrudge you from owning such pieces or make silly purchase offers etc. However, I don't agree that overall, making your gallery public will attract many "negative elements".

The good definately outweighs the bad and I'd prefer to receive more supportive comments following my updates and put up with one or two disagreeable remarks [which actually hasn't happened to me *yet*] if that's what it takes to get some feedback.
Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

I do not care to post an update blog or topic because I feel that that would make me a braggart.

I guess it would be easier if I collected from a series that wasn't as wellknown in the US, where, the most I'd probably ever spend on a cel around be $200 for a fantastic set-up. But, mainstream stuff is expensive, and, with so many people going for these items, there are always bound to be other collectors who will become frustrated when an item they really wanted goes beyond their price range. I try to keep in mind their sensitivies. I put myself in their place - If I just lost out on a super mega wishlist item, would I want someone to post a "OMG! I WON! LOLZ!" topic? Probably not.

Of course, I'm not saying that every cel I win is someone's wishlist , but, with so many users not disclosing their wishlists..it's hard to say.

So, yes, I update my gallery ocassionally, but, I won't dedicate a blog entry out of courtesy to my fellow Sailormoon collectors. If you want to see my collection, my gallery is always open...

Certainly you don't mean to imply that those of us who do post update threads are braggarts, right? I think the point is to share the excitement with fellow collectors, not rub it in their faces. With updates being swept off the front page of RS every 30 minutes, I tend to miss galleries I enjoy so update threads can be very helpful in locating those uploads. And they draw attention to pieces that would probably be overlooked otherwise.

If someone's going to get mad, they're going to get mad. That has nothing to do with you. The fact that you won and they didn't is their beef, not an update thread. If you really want to post an update thread, then do it. Don't let others deter you. But those of us who do choose to post them are not bad people for doing so. It's a matter of personal preference and not because we're braggarts.

I do not feel that everyone who posts about their items is a braggart. I was merely explaining why I choose not do to post a blog whenever I make an update.

In my short span of cel collecting existence, I've noticed that, compared to cel collectors of other animes, that there is a lot of pettiness amongst many Sailormoon cel collectors. I'm not quite sure why this is - you'd think with 200 episodes, 3 movies, three specials and hundreds of commercial and hanken shots, that, although there would be competition for certain scenes/characters, that bickering between collectors would be minimal. But, sadly, there always seems to be a constant level of bitterness between some collectors.

Yes, I agree, if I won something, I should be able to proudly display it without having to worry about what others think. And, ideally, I would. But, I feel that, considering the needs of the community and the cost of some of these cels, that it would be best to, at least for the momment, keep my collection rather low profile.

A lot of the great points have already been brought up. Personally, the combination of collecting semi non-mainstream anime combined with my not having a lot of time to hang around equals infrequent and silent updates, just enough to show I'm still alive mostly.

Though, if something so amazing I think it would be appreciated by all comes along, I squeak like a crack mouse...

I don't usually post updates, cause frankly - I keep my
gallery hidden 95% of the time. I have just come to find
over the years, that all that really matters is that I appreciate
my cels. A few people have asked for my link, and I will
let them know sometimes when I update, but for the most
part - it is just for my enjoyment. Once in awhile I will open
my gallery and post an update - like with my recent Basilisk
update - mostly because it was a new series.

I've probably posted a couple of times during my Beta existence but more recently over the past year, I've kept my updates to myself.

One reason being because I don't generally collect from the mainstream and there's probably only a select few people here who would be interested. If someone's interested in my collection, they're free to visit my gallery.

Because I keep a low profile in the forums, I also don't like to suddenly come out with an update thread and perhaps make people feel like they have to respond even if they don't care much for my updates or know me too well.

I also tend to update sporadically and so as soon as I get a cel delivered, I scan it and put it up. I don't wait for a huge bunch to come in since I'm too impatient (or maybe just perfectionistic) and I like to catalogue my cels in my gallery as soon as I have them. I always update my news section in my gallery too so both myself and other people can keep track of latest updates if they visit.

Bottom line though, I update my gallery for myself. It wouldn't matter to me if no one at all checked out my cels and I equally don't want to put pressure on other people to visit my gallery and feel like they have to comment. It makes me feel good to see my scanning effort uploaded whether or not others see/like it.
I like to keep an online record so I can look at my collection more easily than taking out my cel books everyday and that's my main reason for having a gallery. I also know that there are a few people out there in the world that look at my collection and I like to show the artwork to those interested instead of hiding it away. It's there if anyone wants to view it but I don't need comments to make me appreciate my collection any more.

Many reasons. (warning: long post ahead! 8O )

I think it got to the point where everyone knew that whatever I updated with, it would involve Ichigo in some form or another. Who but I would get excited about that? And that excited to boot?

Like Cutiebunny, I also felt like a braggart, but usually because I was busy doing the In Your Face dance. :P (Nope. Not saying that anyone else is, just that that's how I feel about my own actions.)

A big reason I stopped though, is because for many reasons, I wasn't responding to others' update threads, and I felt a bit of a heel to be putting up a thread when I don't comment for others.

Amazingly enough, people are still checking in on me. I updated recently with a long time Never In a Million Years Pipe Dream cel from Fushigi Yugi, and got a couple of very nice feedbacks. :D

Also, life's been pretty topsy-turvy for me this past year. I try to update when I can, but usually don't have the attention span, or really the right frame of mind for adding a thread or blog to go along with it.

Plus, just to be a pissant, I put stuff in my Coming Eventually section, and then when they come in, I just update the scan and move it to the right listing, in an attempt to avoid triggering a front page update.

And, I miss my scanner. I have to take pictures now of everything, and it's just not all that wonderful looking for sketches. "Hey, come see my crappy photos" just doesn't bring 'em in like it used to. :P

But then again, I'm behind on updating my doll pictures too, so maybe it's all just because I'm lazy.

I love that Tamahome cel... haha

I update when I do alot of scans in at a time. I tend to procrastinate and just upload them all at once(even though some have been scanned in for a month or so). I check when people update, I just dont comment all the time *reclusive with commenting* haha I'm getting better though

I use to do it whenever I updated w/ a wishlist item or something I was really tickled to add.
But now my excuse is different: sheer laziness :P :hitting:

I really want to redesign my RS before updating with any new additions
but since I barely have any free time now-- I keep putting it off.
>_<

When I first joined, I always announced my updates. Over the past year or so though, I got a little lazy. I figure that people who peruse RS mostly know what I collect, so they'll stop by every now and then to see if I have updated or not. I may announce updates if they contain a huge wishlist, but I haven't done that either. X| I guess I've gotten lazier than I thought.

I usually make a thread with my updates b/c as Toni (WC) said... updates are swept off RS in a matter of minutes a lot of the times, and I like to make sure those handful of people who care about my updates know they are there.

BUT

I have been debating about stopping my update posts, because as Leah said... I feel wrong to post update threads, when I myself don't respond to all of them that are posted.

I have an update to make on RS... and I still haven't decided to post it or not. I guess I'll figure it out when I get to posting. :P

Same here! :) It seemed like the thing to do to get to know people and their collections. So I'd let a stack of cels pile up next to the scanner and do one big update at a time. Then some of the regulars who posted to my update threads just starting emailing or calling me and no longer posting. And like so many others' excuses before me, I wound up getting busy in my "outside" life that I didn't have much time to post to others' update threads. So I feel guilty now asking you to look at my update when I don't have the time I'd like to spend checking out yours.

Now, I've decided to update as I go along instead of waiting. It's easier all the way around for me. I haven't decided if I'm going to post anymore wishlist threads or not since my excitement over hitting 30K didn't seem to matter to anyone other than people who had already contacted me. I will try to continue to post to others' threads though.

I post update threads . . . about 2-3 a year. Basically, I update as I go along, then when I get a YJ deputy package (about 2-3 times a year . . . see the correlation? :D ) I update all of that, and post a thread listing everything I've put up since my last thread (and any significant changes, ie added copy matching backgrounds).

Personally, I like looking at everyone's updates. I usually reply to all of them. Do those same people reply to mine? Well, the majority of the time, no. But I don't care too much. There have been a few times when I haven't replied to threads, either because I got too wrapped up in school and the list of threads grew too big, or because I looked at the update and honestly could not think of anything sincere to say.

If you don't have time to reply to all the threads out there, I wouldn't worry too much. Most of us know each other, and are active in other parts of the community, so why should we have to be hyper-active? :P I like looking at update threads because I don't often catch them on RS. If you're only posting update threads and not participating in the community in any other way, then yeah, you might not get a lot of attention. :shrug

Hey now! I posted to that thread! Twice! I can bet I didn't already contact you, either. I very rarely send feedback, and I'm very rarely on chat or anything like that (I think it's been about six months or so 8O ).

See, that's why I like when people post update threads. It's about the only way I actually give any feedback. Though I wouldn't suggest on-going update threads or adding to an existing one--everyone tends to ignore the latest update in those threads.
