Unfortunately I can't think of anything ON the artwork that I've acquired that is a common trait other than ninety percent of them have a female characters on them. :emb

I don't have enough money to collect artwork of both genders. So why not save money and concentrate on only one gender instead? :^^:

Nothing in particular. Lately I've been leaning towards importance of the scene and how much I like those scenes. I've been very strict with having to know the moment it's from before I purchase it. Which for me isn't hard since I know my favorite shows extremally well.

i have no idea what i like in a cel... i do like portraits, and i do follow the rules of an 'intresting' photograph, when looking at and purchasing cels... I know a lot of people seem to covet cels that are exactly centered, while in photography its generally concered boring to have the subject in the direct center of the photograph.. with a verticla subject such as a standing person, or lamp post or something... if you have the subject directly in the middle it makes the photo almost apear split and such. Now I'm not saying I don't have nicely centered cels... I'm jsut saying I've looked at a cel and really liked it for the main fact that the character isn't centered... I'll like it b/c it gives them room to look/run/whatever.

this is a perfect example of the photography rules i was talking about:
Image

I love it b/c your eye flows through the image.... noticing Red's face which moves the eye along the side, and the blue moves your eye along the bottow, which brings your eye to his arm, which leads your eye to the rat he's playing with... and looking along the rat takes you back down to noticing a cowering Carface.... which leads you back to Red's face. There's a nice circle of motion for someones eye in the image. And Red just looks generally evil in the cel. :P

Other than that... I just seem to like portraits, I'm not much for lots of action or full body... the majority of cels I own are definately Portraits.

And toni... here's a hand one for you. ;)
Image

Of course I think it would be intresting to see what other people seem to think I fancy in cels.... they might seem comonalities among cels that I don't see.

Great topic, WC :)

Hmmm...the main things I look for in a cel is the scene and detail. I like to collect from memorable scenes beacause they are...ya know...memorable :P On the detail end, I'm always game to purchase a cel that I can enjoy simply because it's art that I like. Sometimes I get lucky and find both of these characteristics in a cel, like the Kurapica cel below:

Image

It comes from a very memorable scene (atleast for me :P ) and I love the detail put in it. Especially the airbrushing on the eyes 8) When I can get both a great scene and detail in a cel, I'm as happy as can be ^_^

Never really thought about it but if I have to guess I would say expressions... expressions first, detail second. I also love scenes!!

The cel is surprisingly heavy considering the amount of "strips" they had to lay over the background. It's kind of neat to look at though. It must have taken them a bit of time to finish each section.

What wonderful hands! You are too kind

This cel demonstrates a theme I noticed in your gallery. You mentioned it already, cels that are not perfectly centered. Furthering that, I've noticed you like asymmetrical scenes. That YYH cel and the All Dogs cel of Evil Red illustrate that very well. There's an artistic asymmetry to the composition of most of your cels. Here are some random examples:

Your fan cel of Chad:
http://puddle.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... mID=160258

One of your settings from Jin-roh:
http://puddle.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... mID=181725

Gene from OLS:

And these 3 Care Bear cels:
http://puddle.rubberslug.com/gallery/ma ... iesID=8546

There's actually several more examples, but I tried to pick a range of series to showcase what you already mentioned. You seem to favor dynamic composition, with equal and unequal proportions around the central line of focus. As you said, this invites the viewer to follow the story being told by the art (your eye naturally wanders over the scene depicted). Almost none of your cels are perfectly centered, which adds a lot of character to your collection. The subjects seem to "make room" for the viewer and enhances the depth of field in a unique way. Very inviting and highly unusual. I guess it's kinda like the wabi-sabi method of cel collecting. :)

Keropi, that image is hilarious :hitting:

This is a really interesting topic! I had to think about this one for awhile. Some of the things that were previously mentioned; hands, eyes, expressions; are all factors in what makes the images attractive to me, but I thought about it and I have to say the biggest factor would probably be composition.
Here are examples of portrait-type cels that have that compostional integrity that really grabs me. You eye travels naturally through the image.

Here's some more that show the intactions between 2 characters. Note the use of hands and gestures that tie the figures together.
Image
Keyne's mom has deliberately simplified hands as she is made to glow in the scene.

I picked this cel immediately from a selection of cels fom the cut because of Yuusuke's wonderful expression and the beautifully articulated hands.

This one is especailly complicated. Since so much of the figures were shown
.

Sometimes a somewhat static composition is required in order to emphasise something. This cel has an iconic quality and it was frozen on the screen for a few seconds:

She has a classic pose. I love how her outspread fingers echo the spread of her wings.
