Brian - thanks for doing such an excellent job with the beta awards site. I really appreciate that you were able to load and catagorize so many images only a day after the submission period ended.

Good luck to everyone who enterred.

I'm not sure if I was one of the people who had the large size images. I remember shrinking the sizes for them. If I am, I apologize.

So many choices, it'll be very hard to choose just 1 8O .

Thanks blueheaven(and others who're helping) for making this possible.
I can't see why people are giving you grief...

And my Masculine Entry wasn't added either. But I'm assuming that's because a very similar entry was submitted before I sent mine in..... ? :shrug

Regardless, thanks for all your work, BH. :^^:

Perhaps I'm alone in this, but part of the fun for me was having a fair
contest with my fellow members. Taking away the fair part damages the fun
for me. I don't care if I win or lose as long as the competition is fair.

It's especially irritating as this is a rule that was singled out for reminders
earlier (as was already pointed out). Because of that, others and myself
spent time to work on our entries that not only was wasted, but ended up
costing us competitiveness.

There is leeway in every rule and I believe that following the spirit is more
important. For example, I think the expansion of the categories due to
missing entries was fair. Blocking either the missing entry or the last entry
would've punished someone for something that wasn't their fault which
would've been wrong. Likewise, in Brian's example of someone requesting
that an entry be removed, it should be denied unless it's a clear violation
of the rules. I have no idea what the particular hate mail was about, but
for one example: whether a character might be considered a hero or villain
is a judgment call and in that spirit, should remain where the submitter
goes. Only in a case of a flagrant violation such as a hanken or hentai
cel in a category that it's barred from should any entry be denied.

However, the image size is not only within the submitter's control, it was
listed as a specific black & white, no room for debate requirement. It was
not a thing that couldn't be resolved easily by resizing them to be legal.
Absolutely no one would've complained about that. Instead, the quick
yet unfair way was taken. That's why this particular debate has occurred
(at least from my point of view).

My apoliges for the delay in getting those images up. I am really sick right now, and its hard for me to get to a computer. I might be running a fever. Please allow a little time to get things fixed.

As for this being a fair contest, it is a fair contest. End of argument.

Whee.

No ifs, ands, or buts there. I wish things worked that well with my kids.

"It's fair because I say so."

Um, you also said we had to resize the images. So. What are we to believe? Sorry, I'm not following.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well, but I'm sick too. My kids brought home a stomach virus. Maybe the queasies are interfering with my ability to see the logic.

To quote from one of my favorite movies, "You keep using that word. I do
not think it means what you think it means."

From Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, fair is defined as "conforming with
the established rules". The established rules were not conformed to.
Therefore by definition, the contest is not fair.

Or perhaps you mean another definition of fair. How about "open to
legitimate pursuit, attack, or ridicule" as in "fair game"? That might apply in
this case as the contest was opened to legitimate ridicule by the lack of
conformity to the established rules.

Anyways, you've made your decision and I will abide by it. Just don't
expect me to agree with it.

Ok enough snippiness. We do want this to be fun. As is we have a record amount of Beta members entered.

We all know that any decsion made will not make everyone happy. Brian aggreed to run things this year and we owe it to him to give him the leway to run things as he decides is best.

You don't agree , then please be the first to step up and volunteer to run it next year.

For the sake of diplomacy, I will remove this post. I apologize for the things I stated here and the people it offended. I simply reached a limit in terms of the amount of criticism I could take and bit back. Still, it was no excuse.

You are dealing with adults, Brian.

We all work. Some of us go to school on top of that, as well.Others of us work, go to school, and raise kids too. We're not used to being told "it's so because I say so." Sorry if that caught you in a bad moment, but there it is.

It's nice that you volunteered to do this job, this year. But please, do not leap down my throat. *I* did not raise the issue of image sizes, I merely pointed out that my submissions don't look as good as they would have otherwise. I followed the rules, happily. Because you told me to. You told ALL of us to. And I never bitched about the time it took me to do it, you're confusing me with someone else.

I wasn't intending to be snippy in the above message, I seriously don't follow what's going on. I thought we were all supposed to be following the same script, and I figure it's a legitimate question to ask.

But you ARE barking at the wrong person.

You and me both Soda. Not resizing images was something that I imagine was a mistake on those people's parts. I doubt anyone purposely submitted oversized images thinking it would help. The fact that it's gotten this out of hand is pathetic. Brian is doing the best he can and because he's taken all of this on by himself it's his right to make judgement calls where need be. Granted some of you may have done things differently, it isn't your call to make since it isn't you running the show. Instead we should be grateful to Brian for doing all of this. After this mess I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a Beta awards next year. I'm betting a lot of people will be gun shy to take it on for fear of some petty thing like this. You have issues then take it to PM. Keep it off this board. Otherwise I won't hesitate to lock this thread. It's supposed to be about a fun contest. Not a whine fest. I resized my images when I submitted them, but you don't hear me griping. I've been in awe of all the beautiful entries only thinking how hard it will be to decide on one. I hadn't even noticed the sizing issue till I read this thread. DROP IT!

Yep. I haven't answered any questions to help other people out:
Post about the schedule (which you changed)
Post giving the url for last year
Post answering a user's question

Or freely offered you the use of stuff I worked hours on:
Post offering use of the graphics I made before

That's me. Absolutely useless.
blueheaven wrote:You first say that it is no big deal resizing your images, so why can't others do the same. Then, in the same breath, you bitch about "all the work" you did to resize the images. So which is it?
Minutes to do it quickly....a lot more to do it right.

This is the third time that we've had discussions about the awards. In the first, the
only reason why I jumped in was that you were becoming insulting and
bullying to posters who disagreed with you after you asked their opinion.
As I said then
kymaera wrote: You're running things and you make the calls. Just don't say that you will
invite discussion and feedback, then tell people that they are "splitting hairs"
or wanting "absurd" categories.
And you know what? You eventually backed down on your choices because
you realized that you were wrong. And you didn't have the guts to
announce it...you slinked back and edited a post.

Also then, YOU brought up the conflict between what you want to do
as head of the awards and what you want to do as a participant. Again, I
offered a suggestion and even said that I don't care if you follow it or not
since it's not a big deal. You went off on me for insulting you and
threatened to ban me and several other people who had nothing to do
with the conversation via PM's.

Then, this is the third time. YOU complained about people not
sizing their images correctly. I offered a solution..in fact, three of them.
I stated my opinion that it was unfair. How did you respond? By dismissing
all of them and instead, talking about the negative attitudes you keep
running up against...implying, if not directly stating, that you lumped me in
that group which is what started this whole thing going downhill.

I have to apologize to the other Beta posters, though. I've taken this a
bit too far because of my natural reaction to your condescending and
bullying attitude. I sincerely apologize to any of them that I've caused
distress to.

I'll give you what you want, though. Consider this my formal withdrawl
from having to do anything with either you or the Awards this year. Feel
free to take your closing potshots after this as I doubt you can resist.
As for me, it's time to re-add you to the ignore list...for good this time.

Edit: My apologies...was working on this and didn't see Goldknight's msg
until after this went through.

The two folks whose entries I missed have been added to the site.

VS: I did have to remove that entry, as it was EXACTLY like another entry that someone sent in before you. However, to be fair, you may enter another cel if you wish to any open category. My apologies for the confusion.

I must add this for the record: I did not threaten to ban kymaera or any other member of the board, nor will the entries be removed. If you think this is what I wanted, then you have not been listening. I am not a fan of ignore, as I have not used it since I came to this board. So if kymaera wishes to talk this out, you may do so in MSN chat. My username is blueheavenart@hotmail.com.
