Having just googled the term, I'm still not sure what sort of image would qualify as a shibboleth.

With my Biblical studies background, I naturally see "shibboleth" as a word that if said in the wrong way or at the wrong time can get you seriously hurt or even killed. The word meant something like "stalk of wheat" but was pronounced differently in different dialects. After one ancient battle, in which one of the tribes of Israel were victorious over a non-Jewish coalition, the book of Judges records:

And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” 6 they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan.

I can remember groups of tough guys would accost me in grade school and ask me to say something like "sky." If I said it the proper Midwestern way, with a clear dipthong (skah-ee), then they'd let me go. But if I said it in the flat Southern way (skaa-aa), then I had to fight. Not to the death, but you were expected to put up your fists and get yourself knocked down like a proper immigrant from West Virginia should. (Actually I was from East Virginia, but among tough guys in my grade school, the distinction was academic.)

So here's poor Sasahara after he's just used a shibboleth in an innocent and well-intentioned way. (He's just asked Saki if she's an otaku, which can mean "lover of anime" or "geeky pervert," which is the way Saki has taken it.)



But while we're on the topic, someone show me a Biblical character! (Noooo, Mikael, Raphael, and Gabriel in Tennimon don't count because they're not in the Bible, just their names are!)

I was hoping for an image of a long standing, entrenched “anime” belief, like nose bleeds over sex, sweat drops over embarrassment, sneezing while being talked about, etc. I think the “tsundere-punch” fits well.
(And the Biblical passage is a great follow up to ex-seminarian Mamoru Oshii’s work!)

Anyway, here’s Katsuhiko Jinnai, who was definitely more interesting than Makoto Mizuhara.
