Do you like reading comments?

Post by Wendy »

Yes! Another poll! Isn’t it fun? :D

No actually, reading Krafty’s comments in my “one cel glory” thread made me think.
(how does that make you feel Krafty? That your posts actually make me think? Lol :) )

Whenever I update I like to take my time and add some comments to my cels.
These comments can vary from silly fangirl utters like “oooh..isn’t he gorgeous (drool) to a bit more interesting talk about why I bought the cel or what I like about it.

A lot of collectors like to write something along with the cel, but I’ve seen lots of galleries too that did not have any comments at all.
Personally I love reading the comments and I’m often disappointed when I’m really interested in a cel but no comments are updated with it.

So here’s my question; are you guys interested in the comments? do you read them?
Or do you just look at the pretty image and move on.

Or (and this was interesting because Mrs Poe sort of made a comment along this line) do you only look at the thumbnails when you visit a gallery anyway and go through it in warp speed.

If i like a cel enough to bring up the full sized image i will invariably (but not always) read any comments people have left about them.

I try to leave comments on my cels you know like why I like the cel what is happening at the scene the cel comes from or just some dumb ass one liner.

DEFINETLY! I read them as I always enjoy reading the comments, especially silly ones by silly fangirls! :)

It's nice to know what the cel means to the owner and that it isn't just another cel in their gallery! I'm starting to write comments on mine!

Good post Uende!! We want more!

It depends of the mood I'm in for starters.
And although I love reading, I find myself not wanting to read comments the size of Stephen King novel.
However... the more interesting I find the cel, the more I want to know about the history and the buyer's motivation.

And, of course, I am a sucker for funny comments or one-liners.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

I looove reading comments.. almost as much as I enjoy writing them. :D Sometimes, though - I like to put a little thought into my comments, so often when I first upload a new cel or sketch, it will be without comments until I come up with something... :P

I'm for the comments, too, even though it's hard to come up with them sometimes.

I'm not huge on knowing EXACTLY where the cel comes from ... obviously ... :P but if the owner knows that info, it's great to have. What I do really love are comments about why the buyer bought the cel, or a basic identification of the character for those shows I haven't seen.

I'm going to pick on someone now, because... Ralph V. Boy has some of the most wonderful comments ever. Twice now I've just misted right up reading his updates, because they so perfectly caught the meaning of the cel. :-)

And I'm still in awe of Sensei's description of that key moment in the Sleeping Beauty episode of Card Captor Sakura... because of all the meticulous research he did! It's amazing not only because of what it is, but because it is a perfect example of why anime is not necessarily just "cartoons".

But I love silly comments too!!

Text and plenty of it, please! Since I have seen relatively few series, almost everyone's cels are just random pretty pictures to me. But they take on such new depth when the owner writes down their thoughts about the scene and why they chose to buy this particular image. I love love love reading the personal comments! Usually when I visit someone's gallery it's because of a small update, so I don't mind if there is even tons of commentary because I usually only look at a few cels each time I visit a gallery. (There are a few notable exceptions ... galleries where I can't leave after visiting just a few! ;))

Every cel I've bought has a story, or at least a reason, behind its purchase. I can only assume it's the same for everyone else. I like reading the stories or, at the very least, the excitement behind the purchase of a cel.

Until I came here, all I've ever witnessed was just pictures/thumbnails. After reading all the great sites here, I enjoy reading a bit about each cel and think posting the actual frame from the anime is even better. Problem is that I'm lazy and probably wouldn't do that for my own site. Heck, I haven't even updated mine for nearly 2 years. T_T

When I look at other's cels, I'll read the comments and I especially enjoy
the humorous ones. As already mentioned, though, I hate the ones that
decide that they need to write the next War and Peace for each cel, so I'll
skip over those...especially if they are poorly written.

Thanks, Baakay, for your comment. I stalked that cel like birders stalk the ivory billed woodpecker, and so when I saw one, I needed to know it was a real production cel and not another test.

To tell the truth, I wait out the long long period between winning a cel and getting it by writing comments. Besides, it comes naturally to me as an academic. (If you're ever in an academic library, take a look at the "textual commentary" to Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Consular Letters and you'll see exactly the same instincts applied to something a lot less sexy than cels and sketches.

And I enjoy the comments in other people's galleries just about as much as I enjoy looking at the cels. Perhaps more so when the cels come from a series that I don't know, not well anyhow. A plain-looking image can glow with significance if I know that it's from "that scene" in a much-loved series.

Got the Count's cane finished last night. All I need to do now is velcro the floppy iridescent bow to the ruffled shirt, and I'm ready for a screen test.
