Heh. The last Disney movie to use cels was "The Little Mermaid." Japanese anime movies used cels at least up to 2001 ("A Tree of Palme").(the last movie to use cels was "The Little Mermaid" in 1989).
And if so, what's with the alleged cel from "Aladdin," which followed "Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast"? A hanken?
I presume the "Mulan" animation art consists of conceptual paintings?
These are historically nice, but I still wuv my oversized "Tree of Palme" cels with original bgs: easily worth $30 grand to me.

No surprise that the list mostly comes from old and new disney features(Snow White isn't on the list?)
Do you think the person meant made of only cels and didn't have any use of computers? Though I think there was some CG used for the little mermaid.

Anyone know the top ten most expensive anime cels? I only have records for CCS (Still #1 is 357,600 yen [ca. $3200] for the Kerochan no Omakase Pan cel of Sakura in the “Alice” costume from the “Little” episode (#24), sold on YJ on 12/17/03). But I know that nice Miyazaki cels and bgs have gone for 1M yen+ on Mandarake.
Well, art is pretty much worth what people will pay for it. Simply because people buy what they know, since everyone knows Disney, it is no surprise that the animation art on this list is all Disney. It isn't because Disney is BETTER, just that there are more people searching for art they know and they know about Disney. I honestly prefer the look of anime art- Just as some people collect western painters and some collect eastern wall scrolls. It is just a different aesthetic preference. Fortunately for me, the stuff I most like is generally within my budget! (And yes, I wouldn't want to trade my Korams from A Tree of Palme either.)
One other thing, these prices seem to be mostly from auction. There is no telling what else was sold for what by dealers or in private sales. It is just that auction records are public so unless sales are reported in some way, they aren't going to be there. The reason Snow White might not be on the list is because a cel hasn't come up for auction recently. (These prices mentioned do not appear to be adjusted for inflation either.)

I don't know. Wasn't there some way of looking up most expensive completed auctions on YJ for anime cels (within the past three or four months)?sensei wrote:Anyone know the top ten most expensive anime cels? I remember those Kakyuusei TV series pan cels going for $4500-$6000 a couple years ago at Mandarake Big Web Auction. Those were pretty high prices for a TV series anime from 1999 (although the cels were quite nice).
I second that emotion with aMoop wrote:I wish you hadn't said that. For some reason I find the idea of paying over $40,000 for a rilezu to be somewhat horrifying.

well, those 1/1 disney cels sold for so much since they were either charity auctions or that's the only one that will ever be painted for that scene.
Sometimes they may make several from one scene, but they were only given out to employees who worked on the production. Since those shows were never made from cels, they aren't production, but pricey nonetheless.
Check ebay every now and then...I see Mulan stuffage pop up more than anything else.
