Who Was Your First? (Commission)
Who Was Your First? (Commission)
Boring Intro:
So,
as days pass into weeks and months and years, I see myself parting with more and more of this wonderful world of acetate and focusing on other forms of art, comics and games and the like. Cels will always have a place in my heart but I guess I'm just...looking for what else is out there. Perhaps it's a maturity, or even a bitterness at the lack of fresh supply. But whatever the cause, it is a change in attitude to be sure.
Case in point. Not long ago, I thought the idea of fan cels and commissions to be rather silly: spending so much money to create something that the person could draw themselves if they wanted. Unless it was a renowned artist, complete with signature, I thought the prospect was little more than glorified fax machine work. Studio licensed repros fell in to the same category. In short, I just didn't "get it."
Well as Lo Pan would say, I wasn't put on this earth to "get it." Some things just are, and recently, I began seeing the charm and allure in the prospect of granting, letting loose if you will, something of my own imagination and desire into the world of the material through an artists hand, one far more talented than I could ever create. Thus, for the first time ever, I actually hired someone to do a commission of a character (two actually) that I really love...and wow, I didn't understand then...but now I do. It's a cool feeling to know artwork is coming along because you let it, and the anticipation of seeing it be. Ah, it's good times.
Question At Hand (Finally):
So, the point of this thread? Well, for those of who have ever commissioned artwork before, what was your first piece? What was the character(s) or scene that drove you over the edge to said "now that is something I need to have, in one form or another?”
/End Dramatic

I think Saber was my first!

Because it was just too pretty!!!
Think about it! A production cel this pretty should sell for around 3k! The closest thing would be an authorized Relizu!

For me after getting to know Steve Rude from comic-con and purchasing a bit of his work I asked him if he was accepting commissions. He was and so I had him create this piece of Sundra & Jill form his comic Nexus for my wife Maria's birthday that year.

I didn't think it was a boring intro. It actually describes quite perfectly my current feelings. I have gotten in to other things. And while I'll always have a love for cels, it becomes easier and easier to sell them. But on to the real point!
My first, and so far only, commission was Wendy. (Sorry, sadly she no longer does commissions.
) From the moment I first became familiar with Athrun Zala, I knew I had to have something of him. The series is CG so I found myself buying all sorts of buttons, bookmarks, magnets, pins, you name it, that had him on it. Then I finally broke down and decided I would try fan art. I'm so glad I did. And here's the beauty from that fateful decision. He means so much to me. He will never leave me.

Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

I've only commissioned two, the first being a graduation present for my best friend, since there's no way I could have afforded a real ED Van back then. Since the work was running late due to life stuff happening, I found another actual cel for her, and kept the fan cel for myself.
The fan cel I ordered for myself was by keeper, based on a Fushigi Yuugi laserdisc cover, as all of those covers are gorgeous images.

...Oh, I get it...

One of these days, I'm going to get this one from E (mark my words):

At present I only have 2 commissions, both of which were worked on at the same time. However the first one to be completed was Tessai from Ninja Scroll
The reason for getting it made was because I don't forsee the opportunity of owning an original cel of this character, let alone a striking portrait like this shot.
Just like everyone elses artwork in this thread, I think we all get it done for the same reasons.

Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

In many ways, yes. In other ways, no.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

You and I will be mudwrestling for that one...I've been trying for YEARS to get that from him >.</!!!transmet wrote:

Great topic Startyde and awesome fancels everyone!
My first and only fancel to date is, like Krafty, from Ninja Scroll of Kagero in all her glory the moment she first appears as done by our very own Keeper. Although she is a fairly easy character to find (in terms of NS) I couldn't imagine ever seeing this image of her come up for sale. I shouldn't think it's been destroyed like most of them were, but I imagine it's in one of the studio staff's personal collections somewhere or a very rich Nihon Jin.

Mine is Ryuya from AIR.
As much as I love Kyoto Anime's art they just don't produce enough rilezu with male characters in them. I know AIR is mostly about the chicks but still would it kill them to just do ONE shot of TV Ryuya?? Well it must have been something like that, so I had one made by the wonderful Amy. My heart skipped a beat when he turned on that cocky smile...

The first fancel I ever commissioned was of Yukimura from Samurai Deeper Kyo. However, there were some . . . issues a while ago about fancels and relizus, so it's hidden in my gallery at the moment. It remains my only commissioned fancel.
Though, if I could ever figure out how to contact 海の王者(umi no ousha), I would send so many frickin' commissions his way.
