Get me caught up please.
Get me caught up please.
It's been so long since I've been anywhere near this hobby of ours. All my cels are stored away under my bed or in my closet. I haven't been to a con in years! What's been happening? Do they even make cels anymore or is everything CG now? How have the prices been lately? I'm wondering if I should even bother trying to sell anything anymore.
How has my beloved hobby been all these years?

In more ways than you can imagine.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Btw, series are now cg, and prices depend on what's hot at the moment.

I can tell you ANC cels typically don't go for much. If you have an OP or "rare" scene, then you can get maybe $200-$400. Otherwise, you're lucky to get anything over $100. Most of them sell around the $40 mark.
For Fushigi Yuugi, they are holding their own with prices. "Primo" cels easily run $500-$1,000. OPs are the ones that typically go near the 4 digit mark.
Hope this helps!
And yes, I'm actually serious about the links above.

I got chills looking at the pieces in your gallery. You should be able to do pretty well if you decide to sell (but I don't know what you bought them for so I don't know how the prices today compare to then).
If you decide to, you can hold an offer period via the For Sale forum, and see if you get any offers that you think are suitable.

Speaking personally, I still think it's a great time to be collecting. The last studio that used cel-based animation, so far as I know, was the group that did the feature-length movie "A Tree of Palme" (2001). Even that was partially CGI. Everything since has been sketch-based, but if you look carefully, you can find series that have drawings with nearly the impact of cels. (I see that batches of sketches for "Slayers: Revolution" are generating quite a bit of competition lately, and no wonder from the scans.)
There is still good opportunity for collecting nice things, though as the inventory entering the market for the first time diminishes, people are now starting to watch Beta for signs of gallery sell-offs. That's a normal process, and you can expect curators to expect a modest profit on what they paid, especially if they are not selling for distress reasons, so the high-end items like yours will continue to appreciate, provided the interest in the series continues.
Obviously the whole market may crash if the world decides that anime was a bunch of kiddie crap after all and moves on to Britney Bobble-head collecting. (I sooooo want the one with the afro and the Obama button!) But that doesn't seem to be happening soon. Stick around, collect some more, and don't sell your Tamahome for 2001 prices!
(Ah, but I don't collect FY, so whom am I to speak?)

I hope to be as smart as HAL in 2001.

Daa! Daa! Daa! was cel-based until the end of the series in February of 2002. Its studio was J.C. Staff--I'm not sure who did Tree of Palme, so maybe they were the same studio.sensei wrote:Speaking personally, I still think it's a great time to be collecting. A friend went to Japan and saw some cels being painted for Sazae-san, and I think he went after 2002, but I'm not positive. They've probably moved over to CGI by this time, though.
