Do you bid on lots?

do you bid on cel auction lots?

this is something that i have been thinking about, and i was wondering what other collectors thought about it. is it taboo to bid on a lot of cels, if you only plan to keep one or two of them? would you be upset to find out that someone bid on a lot you wanted, kept one cel and then put the rest on ebay? i hate to say it, but i am comtemplating doing this myself. normally i would try to avoid this situation, but ive sent emails to other collectors that have gone unanswered, and don't know what else to do. thoughts?

If no one has said that they want to split the lot with you, then I think it's fair game. Go for it! Then it is your property and you can sell what you don't want if you like.

The only time I disagree with something like that, is when people break up a sequential set for profit (usually with sketches).

I've done it also, and on occasion collaborated with another collector (usually Vapalla) on splitting lots. We once won three inches worth of Tonde Buurin cels and sketches! It seems you've done your part in alerting other interested collectors, and if in the end they need to buy what they wanted from you, then so be it.

Lots are great!!!

Buy the lot and try to sell them here first then try ebay!!!

It's much better then having those cels or sketches dissapear into oblivion!

I love lots!

When, there's just the one cel I want and I get it for nothing after I sell off the others on ebay

Buying for one cel but falling in love with another on seeing them in person. This cel that you wouldn't have considered, later becomes one of your most prized

The starting price is too high considering you only want the one cel, but you reconise the bidder as a dealer. You later get the one you wanted off ebay for a more likely price and they get their profit

Lot = instant collection for newcomers

The problem is that they take up a lot of space if you keep them all. I grabbed a few cuts from A Tree Of Palme recently [this'll make Sensei's ears prick up] because there was a cel I really wanted. Problem is that they are all oversized and weigh a TON!
Because of this I might wish to sell most of these after I've had my fun with them by making ani-gifs or something. One thing I'd never do is just dispose of them; that'd be a terrible sin.

You shouldn't worry about buying this lot, Caroline. At the end of the day if you're the one bidding most for the auction you deserve to get them and you can do whatever you want with them.
I have a friend who wants to plaster his drum kit with genga but I persuaded him to use photocopies if he is intent on doing this! I think that anime art should remain intact and not messed about with.

When I was buying cels I rarely bought cel lots. The series I bid on rarely came in lots anyway.

I don't want to go through the process of selling anything so I always took into account that I would be stuck with whatever "extras" I ended up getting from an auction.

I don't think I would be upset about it because I would have bid on the auction as an entire unit. If I had lost the auction it would have been for the entire unit as well.

I suppose it could stir some annoyance though if the extras were posted on eBay under a known reseller's name. But if you were using your own non-known YJ-to-eBay reseller name I can't see how it could be a problem with most people.

It's about what you APPEAR to be doing as opposed to what you REALLY might be doing.

I have bought in lots before. Depending on the value of the extra cels (or whatever) I don't want; I will either sell them, trade for something else or give them away as freebies.

You could avoid the animosity by telling people that you bought them in a lot and are selling the ones you're not interested in. I don't know if that would affect sales or not, though.

I've bought a few lots before as well. If there are items that I'm not interested in, they make great holiday gifts for fellow RS/Beta friends.

It beats paying those E-bay fees

Definitely not! What are the odds that anyone would want all of the cels in a lot which was arbitrarily thrown together by the seller? Some sellers will put a rare cel into a lot with a few so-so cels, just because it's easier than trying to list them all separately. That certainly doesn't obligate you to keep all of them. (In fact, it's likely that most of the people who bid on the auction are going after the same one or two cels.)

I've done it.

It seems 9 times out of 10 you're not going to want all of them. Sometimes people sell in lots just to get rid of their cels/sketches quickly. I usually wait a few months before trying to resell. And then when I do resell items I received in lots, I usually start them very low. I look at the amount I spent to be for the piece I wanted to keep. The rest are just freebies in my book. If I can sell a few of them, my cost goes down for the one I really wanted.

I have a few times in the past. The last lot I purchased was several months ago from "Daa! x3"

There is a diff between buying because you really wanted a couple or so and then selling off the extras, and buying only to resell at a profit. In general though, you shouldn't be penalized just because you want to buy a cel you really want. If ebay bugs you, you could aways try to sell the ones you didn't want on here first...
