2008 Review and 2009 Sketch/Cel Resolutions

Post by cutiebunny »

I figured that I would revive this topic(now a 3 year tradition!) as the year is coming a close...

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008?
(see http://www.anime-beta.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=23168 for quick reference)

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.

I hit 20K hits on Christmas :)

As for my collection, I was fortunate enough to acquire several wishlist items this year.

2. The most surprising thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

Nothing surprising has happened to my gallery. I haven't tinkered around with it much.

As for my collection, whether due to economic downturn or lack of interest in what I collect, I have been fortunate to win some nice items for far less than I expected to pay. This is the first year that I can recall where the prices for some of the items that I collect are actually going down.

I also am slowly starting to shift towards sketches. The idea of them being animated interests me, and even though I have no clue as to how to make a gif, I'd like to try in 2009.

3. Things that concern you about your collecting experience.

Similiar to last year, it's the supply that is concerning me. I can't find anything that I want to add from the primary anime that I collect from, Sailormoon. I think I've purchased around 10 items from that anime this year, not because I can't afford the always high prices, but because I can not find anything that I want.

Another thing that concerns me is the rampant image theft which seems to be plaguing most of the Sailormoon collectors. It's gotten to the point that I have had to restrict access to my site, and even having to block the ability to see the screenshots that I spent quite a bit of time last year making. I don't like having to do this, so I'm now left with two choices - keep access limited to my gallery or watch silently as the artwork that I have collected gets placed on a large Sailormoon image site.

4. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch resolution posted in 2008?

In 2008, due to price and supply, I wanted to focus more on other anime instead of Sailormoon. Considering the amount of items I've purchased this year, Sailormoon items make up less than 10% of my new additions. And, thanks to my trip to Japan this year, I was able to purchase several nice cels at Mandarake for a couple of dollars each. All things considered, I think I have kept my resolution by staying away from Sailormoon and focusing on other anime.

5. Cel/sketch resolution for 2009.

My resolution is the same as last year - to continue collecting from lesser known(or collected titles). Yes, I will still faithfully continue to check out the YJ auctions for what I collect, but if the supply is any indication, I won't be purchasing much in the way of Sailormoon.

1- The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection:

I changed my gallery layout, completely and absolutely love it.

2- The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection:

I have almost stopped uploading all together, never have the time and it's just so overwhelming.

3- Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience:

It's never ending, that or I have lost all control and if that's the case I need to regain it.

4- A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009:

Spend less on cels and more on the home now that I know we are staying here.

5- Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008:

Once again Yes and No...
otakusin wrote:Purchasing a new scanner, my scanner opens like a book making it near impossible to scan pans and other oversized cels. And again same as always, I hope to have everything scanned and uploaded.
...still have several cels left to scan but this time round I am not making a resolution to do so, since most likely I will never actually complete this task!!

I did however purchase a new scanner but I ended up buying the newest version of the previous one so I still have the book style.

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.
I've been fortunate to be able to acquire several pieces that are absolutely wonderful.

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.
Hmm, I guess just that I've been able to acquire certain pieces.

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
Haha, just that I spend too much on artwork.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.
To try to buy only those cels that truly interest me.

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008?
Last year's resolution was the same as this year, and I guess I mostly stayed true to it, although I wandered from the path a few times when I've been tempted by the random piece that attracts me or piques my interest.

Heh. Last year I was in Chicago interviewing candidates for a faculty position at my campus, and I came back a smoldering hulk of a sensei, so New Years went in a rush and whirl. So it's embarrassing that this has become a tradition even if I haven't been keeping it up. Thanks muchly, cutiebunny. Image

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery. I'd say the thorough retooling of its look that resulted from the 2008 Beta Open House. I learned a lot by looking critically at the other galleries, and got some good ideas. The "Quick Gallery Tour" surprised even me: I tried out a new way of cross referencing all my galleries from a limited set of pages, and it actually worked! The "Quirky Gallery Tour" also turned out to be fun to do and successful with visitors.

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery. Buying a not-very-clearly described "Tree of Palme" lot because I saw a cel in a fuzzy digicam photo of a messy midden of stuff that I thought came from my favorite moment in the film. Getting it several weeks later (stuffed not-very-carefully into a Japanese shopping bag and boxed up with a couple of crumpled newspapers) and finding that what I'd won was, among lots of miscellaneous items, the entire cut of said favorite moment -- 93 cels worth.

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience. I think I'm less concerned now than I was in 2006 about whether I'm in "the mainstream" of animation art collecting. I like what I have, and if I'm a lone collector (as I am with PPGZ art), then I'm the more satisfied with it because of its uniqueness. But I am more and more concerned about its long-term health. I've put more time and effort into checking condition and dealing with issues like long-term tape damage. I worry that with my collection getting so large, that I'll inadvertently allow pieces in it to deteriorate due to my own curatorial neglect. I'm also concerned that, as I grow older, that it has a secure long-term home where it will be curated well, rather than stuffed in a broom closet or left out with the trash on my demise.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2008. I plan to organize the physical cels/sketches much more efficiently and compile a finding guide so that I can locate a given item or sketch set without (as I must do at present) having to guess, remember, or hunt through all my books and boxes.

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2007?

I didn't do well with my 2006 resolution, adding lots and lots of new cels and sketches in numerous new series galleries in 2007. I think I did much better in 2008, adding only a couple of galleries that were simply subdivisions of existing series galleries, to better showcase items from a given episode. In fact, I didn't add a single new anime series gallery this year (though I will add one later this week and another in January). I think I'm getting better at choosing quality over quantity (though if I'd known PPGZ and Sasami sketches would dry up so completely, I'd have gotten even more of them in 2007 than I did.)

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.

Last January, when I was talking to a friend, I suddenly received a phone call from a private collector asking if I wanted this awesome cel. It was a huge surprise to be able to find this rare and expensive piece!

Expensive, expensive, expensive!

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.

My new year's resolution from last year was to be a lot pickier about what I buy. During the 2008 year, I purchased a total of 3 cels. So far, I purchased 1 cel for 2009. So, I think I did pretty well.

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.
The best thing... My gallery got 3 Saitou wishlist cels that I had put a lot of work and negotiating skills to acquire. One took 2 years, the other took a 1.5 years, the other well I guess 2 years. Basically close to when I seriously started collecting. Out of these 3, one of them belonged to a collector who took me a year to locate. I am so happy, that's probably why I'm more happy with my Saitou cels, I really put a lot of effort into acquiring them.

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.
This probably isn't a surprise... But I'm still surprised nonetheless... Since 2006 I have only won 1 production cel of Saitou on auction (with a buy it now nonetheless). Oh wait i won one Saitou production sketch this year but I gave that to a friend who is another nut like me.

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
Negotiating is much harder to do now. Either there's really not a lot of pieces I'd negotiate for or the situations/conditions required from me are sometimes not reasonable IMO. It's a good thing I can still walk away when needed. However on the bright side, there are still a lot of collectors who have treated me well in this hobby and though they go unnamed, I am greatful for their support and encouragement.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.
I would like to finally decide where I will take my collection. I don't just want to acquire cels... I want to "collect". I mean to get to a point where I can effectively cull if needed and acquire pieces when appropriate. There's a lot of anime that when I start liking I start wanting artwork from... Although there is value in having a "representative" collection (aka having a gallery with many series and a few representative cels), I'd like to go beyond that kind of collecting (which is not possible unless I have an endless supply of time and money which I don't). Also, I have trouble culling and putting some cels up for sale. I really think when I open my gallery to offers for some odd reason I feel it is demeaning so if I want to sell something, sometimes I just put it out there without an announcement (or I bite the bullet and spam every messageboard and tell them I'm selling. LOL). Yeah I'm a great marketer...

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008?
My resolution was in 2008 was to get two of my dream cels. I did get them. See above. :D

I can answer all the questions with "The same as last year".

And if you take the time to search for last years thread you will find it very similar too. :D :D :D

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.
Split up AnC into more sections.... Added alot of wishlist cels. <3_<3

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.
Added more sketches... HAHA

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
dishonest sellers and people who flat out scam. Ran into both of those this year for the first time since I started collecting. No bueno.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.
Do more than one update a year... Do not hang onto a ton of sketches and cels and do one large update. It is a pain to upload all of that stuff at once. ~_~

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008?
I did okay. I did buy less sketches this year versus last year. I only bought sketches this year because I was able to meet up with the seller while I was on vacation and got to pick which ones I wanted. Instead of buying a whole box... full of stuff I really don't want. ~_~
I also PWNED at getting wishlist cels this year. yup

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.
i think finding wonderful new anime's through other people's collections (yeah its technically not about "my" personal collection but collecting is collecting and a passion is a passion wether its in my collection or in other peoples). so learning about new anime's and finding my own passion about them. :D

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.
how expensive its gotten 8O

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
that i want EVERYTHING (but i cant have everything) *cries*

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.
hmmmmmmm.....
to stay more focused.
like i said, i tend to want everything that i see (that i like) and i tend to get into "gotta have it all" kinda attitude.
i have to focus more on what im into, what exactly im looking for in that and just not jump at everything and anything.

*crosses fingers* :^^:

1. The best thing that’s happened to your gallery/collection.

The completion of the merger of Yoshito's gallery with my own to form isshoninaru! ^_^ This project still does need some work, as there are probably a ton of cels and sketches that remain unscanned (we honestly have no idea just how many), and many cels and sketches need to be re-scanned.

2. The most surprising thing that happened to your gallery/collection.

Growth slow-down... to many it may look like we updated our gallery a ton over the course of 2008, but it was definitely at a much slower pace than during 2007 and previous years.

3. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

I've observed a lot over my 6+ years of collecting, and nothing truly concerning comes to mind about this year in particular. Probably the closest thing I can think of about this year is my growing disgust with eBay and using eBay to sell artwork we no longer wish to keep.

4. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2009.

I think the only resolution I'd really like to make for 2009 is to begin working on/continue working on getting our online main gallery up-to-date with everything in our folders, bins, and cel books. This task will likely take the entire year if not longer to accomplish, but it's something we should look to do.

5. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2008?

Since we did not post a resolution, I can't really answer this properly, but we did set a goal of getting the merger of our two galleries done, and on a most basic level, we did accomplish this!
