Too Good To Be True (Venus Henshin for 80$?!)

Post by MidniteKitten »

So I was looking through a Sailor Moon Collecting website when someone posted this as one of their newest additions. I was a bit skeptical about it because of the price it was sold for and a few things that struck me as odd. So I'm curious if it's authentic or not?

PS> Sorry if it's someone here on beta, it's just bugging me >o<

I asked about registration holes and number and they said A141

So I did a run through on youtube and I saw a few things that put me uneasy

The shadowing in the "part" of the hair isn't there. The inner shading/highlighting of the tiara gem seems off to me as well. They bought it for 80$ from someone whom lived nearby, that just gave me an off feeling about it, especially seeing the shading missing in the part of her hair. Though I admit it does show more than a usual fan cel. Possible rejected henshin cel? Let me know what you think.

The red bow looks the wrong color. And I am surprised at the apparent lack of line-fading, which is so prevalent among Toei cels. It could be a reproduction OP cel, or a test cel, or a fan cel.

I agree, but gave them the benefit of the doubt that their scanner caused the change in color (I know Sailor Moon cels have a hard time scanning a certain pink and red which turn up brown-ish) I was also suprised by what little line fading. I think a reporduction might be right but aren't those usually labeled x/xxx?

Thanks! But this leads to the mysterious "how'd the number get there" scenario as per the recent 200eps cel. Wonder what's up? :/

Nope. In fact, most repros are not labeled at all. But this still begs the question - why does it have a sequence number if it's not legit?

The line work in the hair is off as well....It seems that people are so desperate for cash that they are reproducing famous series? I hope its not a fancel, but I am having doubts that it is in fact authentic

That is definitely a Toei reproduction cel. I have one just like it in my collection (although, I do not have it up in my gallery yet). My cel has the same shading and line flaws as this one.

All Toei reproduction cels originally came sealed in bag with two Toei stickers - one on the back that seals the bag closed and a smaller silver one on the front. It would have also come with a separate piece of cardboard that has a handwritten number on it to indicate its number in the series. For instance, the piece of cardboard that came with mine says it is #19/100.

Toei made several Sailor Moon reproductions. My guess is that there are around 15 different ones because IIRC, there is one each of the 5 inner senshi from 3 different repro series. One repro series matches cels from each of their henshin sequences, one series matches cels from the second opening from the original season and the final series of repros are portrait shots that I have never been able to match up to anything.

All of these cels have registration holes but do not have any sort of number written on them. That makes it very easy for someone to come along and add a number later on and try to claim it as the real deal. I've seen this happen a few times over the years and I even got fooled and bought one of Sailor Mars way back when I first started collecting. Luckily this person didn't get ripped off too badly because $80 or less is usually what these repros generally sell for.

The funny thing is whoever wrote the bogus cel number on the cel was very close to the correct number. I have a real production Venus henshin cel that is very close to the frame that this repro cel was modeled after:

The cel number on my cel is A139 and I believe the repro cel comes 3 frames after mine and should be A142, so they were only 1 cel number off.

Thanks everyone and especially Luna-art! I have linked the buyer to the thread so she can get a better understanding that her cel is still official but never saw camera time. I appreciate everyone's help ^w^
