Beta Sketch Awards for Summer?

Post by cutiebunny »

During the Beta Awards last year, the possibility of seperating the awards into paper and plastic was mentioned. It was a popular idea and almost half of those who voted were in favor of a seperation. I figured that, as summer was approaching, that it would be a good time to bring up this topic again, with the possibility of having two seperate awards, one in summer and one in winter. Should the community decide in favor of seperate awards, this would also allow award organizers time to plan for this event.

Some Pros and Cons(sorry, I'm an analytical thinker..)

Pros -

- More awards given to more members a year.
- Level playing field for sketches(as it seems, statistically, that painted media win more awards that those that are not).
- More member participation. Some members were unable to participate due to their schedule(work, school...)

Cons -

- More work for members in terms of organization, award creation, etc.

Thoughts? Opinions? Candy?

I'm cool with a separate Paper Awards. :) Obviously it needs a lot of thought and organization, but I feel that paper and plastic need their own shows in order to be truly appreciated. After all, comparing a gorgeous cel to a gorgeous genga is like comparing apples and oranges. It's easier if you choose one medium.

I am new to the forum and have not been present for your awards yet, but I have seen them in many galleries. My thought is if you want to separate paper and plastic then members should only be able to post one or the other for a given cel/genga. Some members just have unbelievable cels with unbelievable matching gengas. To cut down of the work offer one for evaluation not the matching cel or genga as well.

The paper awards sounds cool and I'm all for it. Betarians have tons of striking drawings which deserve the limelight.

But on a personal note I loath the idea because it'll make me unpack thousands of sketches and review them all followed by a laborious scanning session! *heh, I'm so uninspired right now*

I think you've reached the point where it takes a lot of time, planning and effort just to remove your artwork from storage, scan 1% of what you need to have scanned and then put it all back. :D

I'd love to see how this would go -- I'm game :). Good thing I've been scanning most of my sketch sets in full 8) .

Agreed....
I mean, sometimes the cels are prettier than the sketches, the colors in the cels add to the artwork and between a sketch and a cel of a similar scene, I'm sure the cel would win.....

I'm up for a summer deal, maybe I can win something this time :P

Does anyone want to volunteer to lead this project?

I was wondering if this thread and idea died since not too many have posted here.

I am interested in this project and how well this would work. I am willing to help, but I wouldn't want to lead the project. Maybe no one else does either; thus the lack of posts.

Just curious if this should be given a proper burial. X|

Well, if no one wants to take a leadership role, I can volunteer for it. I'd rather take on some responsibility for the awards rather than see them fizzle(and have to listen to a rehash of the "Why can't we have seperate awards?" later this year).

I like the idea of separate awards. Willing to help out, but also selling house and moving in the next 7 to 8 weeks, so don't have that much time to spend. If you need a volunteer, throw my name in a hat, but pull me out last!! (If that makes any sense to you ...)

I was under the impression that the dropoff of certain collector's posting here has hit the sketch collectors more than the cel collectors (going by percentages anyway).

But that's probably just my imagination.

I think this is a busy time for many collectors which should be able to explain some of the drop off in posting. These are the student collectors and it's finals time...
