Beta Sketch Awards 2009 - Winners up!

Post by cutiebunny »

Update 9/15 - All winners and graphics are up!

You'll notice that the categories and rules are similiar to the Beta Awards 2008, with the exception that we've pulled the harmony category and replaced it with tranquility.

Viewing/Voting Period

http://basketch09.zero-space.net

August 23rd(at exactly 10:20p PST) to September 3rd at 8pm PST.

All participants are required to vote for all standard categories. The optional categories(Hentai, Animated & Settei) are not mandatory, unless a participant submitted artwork in these categories.

Even if you didn't submit artwork to this contest, you can still vote!

Rules

1) You must be a registered member of Anime-Beta by the end of the artwork submission process.

2) You must physically own all artwork that you submit. Submitted artwork does not have to be posted in your gallery.

3) If you submit any artwork for consideration in this contest, you must vote for all categories, with exception of the hentai, settei, and animated galleries. These categories remain optional to vote in and are optional to submit artwork to.

4) All artwork submitted must not include watermarks or any other type of 'tag' that would affiliate it a gallery or owner.
No more than 8 submissions (5 standard categories, 3 optionals) per participant will be permitted.

Submission Info

1) Only one entry per category is allowed by any entrant.

2) Maximum pixel width for all standard size douga/genga/other artwork is 500 pixels, 600 for all pan/oversized artwork. You may submit artwork that is less than this pixel size, though. Regardless of the size of the item, the total file size can not exceed 300k. Standard size artwork is roughly 11.89 inches x 9.5 inches (302mm x 241 mm), while a pan or oversized item is much larger than this standard. Maximum file size for animation submissions is 800K.

3) Artwork that has received a Beta Award in previous years cannot be submitted under any category. This includes sequence mates or matching douga or genga to previous winners.

4) Unless there is an obvious difference, sequence mates in the same category are not permitted. Whoever submits the artwork first will be allowed to use that artwork in that particular category. If you manage to submit a sequence mate to an item that is already in that category, you will receive an e-mail and permission to enter another item in lieu of the repeated piece. This applies to all types of artwork.

5) Artwork submitted that is not Hanken or Other must be animation related.

6) Categories with fewer than five entries will be eliminated.

7) While you are permitted a total of 8 submissions(5 in the standard categories and 3 in the optionals), you are not required to submit eight different items. You may enter fewer items if you choose.

All submissions will be reviewed for adherence to the rules. If there is an issue, the submitter will be contacted by the reviewer to reach a resolution.

Early submissions

In the event that a participant is unable to submit their artwork during the official submission weekend, they will be allowed to submit their artwork to summerbetaawards09[at]gmail.com (please put the @ sign instead of 'at').

Your artwork must also meet all standard guidelines concerning pixel width and size.

If you choose to submit your artwork early, you agree to the following two rules:

1) Your artwork will be considered to be the last submission received. In other words, if Participant A submits a sketch from a scene as an early submission, but Participant B submits genga or douga from the same cut during the official submission period, Participant B will be allowed to use it as their official entry.

2) You will not be allowed to submit 'alternatives' in the event that another participant submits the same art piece. Unlike those participants who submit during the official submission period, early submission participants will not be alerted that their item was not accepted due to a previous submission.

Shikishii/Autographs

Shikishii/autographs have their own category. By submitting artwork to this category, you agree, in addition to the standard rules, to the following:

1) If an industry person signed a media that is not a standard shikishii board/blank white piece of paper, only the signature and any original accompanying artwork that the industry person drew is allowed to be submitted. In other words, if an artist signed their name and drew a happy face on a poster, you may only submit a scan of the portion of the poster containing the signature and happy face. For the summer awards, only shikishi or autographs on paper are accepted.

Image modifications

For the most part, the modification and/or enhancement of images (ie. Photoshop) is permitted in the event that artwork adheres to the following guidelines.

The guidelines are:

1) Oversized images requiring multiple scans. You may piece these items together to make one complete image.

2) Sketches. As some sketches do not scan well, you are allowed to modify the image so that the lines appear darker. However, you are cautioned against making the lines 'too dark' as this may be indicative of a xerox copy instead of an original. Additionally, some artwork may be on different sheets and, in order to complete the scene, they will need to be edited. Please note that you are limited to copy/pasting of said characters to complete the scene and can not modify the artwork in any other way. You can, though, crop the artwork so that one portion of the sketch is not shown(ie. You are submitting a layout and want to crop the artwork so that the "zoom in" box does not show in the submission).

3) Artwork in the Animated section. You are allowed to cut, paste, etc. in order to make your creation, as many sketches are 'partials' and require artwork from other sketches. However, keep this within reason. No flashing lights, disco music, or anything else that didn't come along with your sketch packets.

Here is the list of the categories for the summer awards:

We have a quick question:

If a hanken has both a hand-drawn douga sheet and a hand-colored shadow reference sheet (douga lines being copy), is it possible to enter either one of them? We would like to confirm whether or not hand-colored shadow reference sketches are acceptable for submission.

Thanks :)

This question was addressed in the original discussion thread (see page 4 of that thread):

Speaking of hankens, was it ever decided if hankens had to be completely hand-drawn, or can people enter ones with photocopied lines which have been intensely colored/shaded?
I would say that, since not all hankens are hand-inked, that photocopied lines should be permitted(as that is the normal way that cels were made). However, there should be some original work done to it, such as a correction, colored shading, and things of that nature.
;) There was some disagreement on this, but it was never fully resolved.

So, while we're on the subject, I'll toss in my two yen worth. I believe these colored hankens with copy lines should be allowed, mainly because CG hankens do not often come with both lines AND coloring, unless you're looking at an early-stage genga. Often, these genga have been separated and what you get are the two final douga stages.

For example, the following FMA hanken in my gallery:
http://www.zero-space.net/gallery2/disp ... ?itemid=11

The main image shown is the shaded/colored douga that was copied. The additional image seen at the bottom of the page (click it for detail), is the actual original douga. To me, the colored image makes the impact that the piece should have, not the clean-line douga.

But that's just my two yen. I'm curious what others think as well. :)

This might seem a little stupid or silly, but I think it might prevent some problems when it comes time to submit . . .

In place of H (Hanken), perhaps we could have HS (Hanken Sketch). I know that since this is the sketch awards, sketch is implicit, but not all people might get that . . . :P

What about Rilezu Dougas and Gengas?

Are they allowed in all categories, select ones like Hankens or not at all?

To my knowledge they ARE the regular sketches from a show so as long as they're not copies, I pressume they're treated no differently to other douga/genga drawings.

BTW, just wanted to say that this will be an impressive event so thanks for setting it up!

Some of the douga that come with Rilezu aren't production drawings, though. Sometimes, they redraw the douga, putting all layers on one sheet, and send that redone douga with the Rilezu. I don't know too much about it, since I don't collect Rilezu, but I remember there being a thread or two about it. Fused douga? Something like that.

I've never heard of genga coming with Rilezu before, though. If they do, I imagine that they'd be production drawings, since it would make little sense to draw genga over again.

Yeah, a number of them aren't production drawn. They were drawn for the Rilezu. If they were production sketches I would have bought a few Rilezu just for the production sketches alone esp. Fate/stay night, etc.

But one reason they do that is because they weren't allowed to release the production sketches so they're forced into doing that. :(

At one point, I would have been perfectly happy paying $350 for just one nice sketch sheet from Fate/stay night. But it was not to be....unless it was from you-know-who. And I didn't want to go that route.

I suppose since we accepted rilezu cels in the last awards that it would be only fair to accept rilezu sketches.

What does everyone else think?

If Rilezu sketches are accepted, than in would only be fair to also allow sketches that are "pieced" together (that have different layers), since they where not lucky enough to be "re-drawn" like Rilezu....

....but either way is good.....thought they are not technically production sketches, since they where not used on the show....

Well, neither are rilezu cels, but those were allowed last time, too. ;) I have no problem with rilezu douga/genga being permitted.

Were Rilezu cels in their own category? I can't remember.

Personally I'm against it because as others have said they were not used in the actual production of the show. I'd be fine with them having their own category, though we already sort of agreed on a category list.

As for hanken, I'm cool with accepting hanken with copied lines if there is coloring work done. If it's just copied lines and nothing else, I'd say no go.
