Beta Cel Awards 2009

As November is drawing near, it's time to hold the awards for the painted media section of our collections.

Here are the categories from last year's awards. These categories are from when both plastic and paper media were included together.

Accessory - Emphasis on what the character is holding, using, swinging, playing, aiming. (C, S, R, RC)
Action - Scenes of action, movement, motion, dynamism (C, S, R, RC)
Background - No characters allowed. (C, S, P, RC)
Children - Youths, babies, kids. (C, S, R, RC)
Comic/Manga - Original art from comic artists and mangakas (S, P, O)
Creature - Animals, monsters, pets, demons. (C, S, R, RC)
Cute - Adorable, precious, toothache inducing. (C, S, R, RC)
Death/Dying - Characters in the final throws of death, or those that have already passed away. (C, S, R, RC)
Embarrassed - Blushing, mortified, awkwardness, total humiliation. (C, S, R, RC)
Fan Art - Made by you or another artist. (C, S, P, O)
Female - The fairer sex. (C, S, R, RC)
Funny - Laugh out loud moments. (C, S, R, RC)
Group - Art of 2 or more characters. (C, S, R, RC)
Hanken - Art used for merchandise or other non-production special circumstances. Hankens are not allowed in any other category. (C, S, H, P, O)
Harmony - Unique combinations of line work and watercolor used to convey deep emotion and profound artistry. (C, S, P, RC)
Heroic - White knight saves the day. (C, S, R, RC)
Insanity - Irrational delirium, totally crazy. (C, S, R, RC)
Joy - Extreme happiness. (C, S, R, RC)
Male - Boys, guys, men, bishonens. (C, S, R, RC)
Outfit - Best dressed, emphasis on clothes and costumes. (C, S, R, RC)
Rage - Mad, angry, extreme agitation. (C, S, R, RC)
Robot - Our mechanical friends. (C, S, R, RC)
Romance - Kissing, hugging, groping, anything non-explicit. (C, S, R, RC)
Shikishii - Original signatures and/or artwork drawn by industry artists. Only the artist's signature and accompanying sketch are allowed for submission.(C, S, P, O)
Shocked - Stunned, horrified, utter dismay. (C, S, R, RC)
Sorrow - Tear jerkers, sadness. (C, S, R, RC)
Special Effect - Power bursts, transformation effects, airbrushing, etc. (C, S, R, RC)
Villainous - Archenemies, evil scientists, meanies, wicked bad guys. (C, S, R, RC)

Optional Catagories -

Animated - Short sequences of animated artwork.(C, S)
Hentai - Sexually explicit & nude. All pairings welcome!(C, S, R, RC
Settei - Original sheets(not copies) or model cels featuring character, item or scenery. Settei and Model cels can only be submitted to this catagory.(MC, SE)

This year, we added a new category for the Sketch awards - "Tranquility". Should we use that category for the cel awards as well?

What about shikishi - should we include the colored versions in the cel awards and those that are mostly done in black/white for the sketch awards?

Also, the animated and settei categories may not have many entries as they will be solely dependent on cels this time around.

And, of course, the most important question - any takers for organizing the affair this year?

Wow it is that time already...........

My two cents........
If the animated category is included, sketches allowed since most people only have partial or full cel sequences. Otherwise, axe the category.

Shikishi with (some or full) color in them would be a nice idea to distinguish them from the sketch awards.

Since paper has broken off into a separate awards show, I believe it should be entirely removed from the plastic portion with no sketches allowed in any category. Therefore, the shikishi category should be removed entirely.

Well,yes and no.

We eliminated painted media for the fan-art section as well. As cels are painted media, I believe that all painted artwork(including those done on paper) should be included in this event. That's why I'm asking if shikishi should be allowed to stand as their own category, but, all shikishi submitted need to be colored(or mostly colored).

I realize that in the sketch awards, we did allow colored shikishi. I admit that this might have been a mistake because the majority of shikishi out there is largely done in black marker on a white board. The sketch awards were a test for us, and looking back on it, there were a couple of things I would like to see changed for future awards. Ideally, what I would like to see is black/white shikishi submitted in the sketch awards and the colored variety submitted for the cel awards.

Hmm... Since there was tranquility last time for sketches... I'd really like to see a category for Determination/Resoluteness this time around. I seem to see so many beautiful cels in their own right that doesn't really fit in the "heroic" and is just so loosely fitted in male/female categories. I'd rather see determined characters since there's so many scenes of that since it's typically a character value that anime tries to imparts to it's audience. Just my thoughts. Thanks.

I agree with the idea of Determination/Resoluteness as a category. I think Heroic is a hard category since heroic is usually an action and hard to portray in a single image. Usually the setting or costume, not the character, is what makes the image look "heroic". Determination is displayed on the character's expression or stance.

I also like the Tranquility category and think it should be included for cels.

I also agree with black/white shikishi submitted in the sketch awards and the colored variety submitted for the cel awards.

I would be a little sad to see the animated section go! Ill be entering with cels this year!

Wasnt there a rule that if i section got under 5 entries then it was taken out of the competition? I think it would be better to keep the catergories and then remove them if they dont get enough entries.

I agree that Tranquility is a good idea! And that determination is better than heroic.

I agree with this... As long as there are entries then the animated category should remain. This will allow us to see more art work too.

It's probably not what you meant but I just wanted to clarify that I'd like to see the determination/resoluteness category added than actually replacing heroic. Heroic is in it's own right a good category to have. I don't think the two can be substitutes for one another.

Can you really call it the "Beta Cel Awards" when things like paintings are allowed in categories? Harmony, Background and Comic categories alone invite things other than cels, so a title revision might be in order. Not that it's a HUGE deal... really... just saying. Since it's been around since 2003, why not just keep the same, original name? The sketch awards are the new kid on the block afterall, so distinguishing it with "sketch" makes sense.

Whew, glad my airheadedness didn't make me miss out on things again! I agree that determination should be added, possibly to replace heroic. I also support bringing tranquility in from the sketch awards.
