Does anyone here have their collection insured? And I'm not talking about generic riders on your homeowners insurance. I'm talking about actual had-the-collection-appraised-and-it's-now-insured. :)

If so, how did you go about getting an appraisal for Japanese animation artwork?
I know of a few places which will appraise American animation art, but I don't know of anywhere off hand which has a licensed appraiser who will do anime art.

If you have managed to find an appraiser, how much did you have to pay? Was it per piece, or a lump sum for the whole collection? Did the appraiser offer a discount for future appraisals - to keep your collection up-to-date enough for insurance purposes?

Most insurance companies that specialize in collectibles don't require a complete inventory or formal appraisals. You need to know what you have in the event that you ever have to file a claim. You tell them how much you need to insure the collection for, and they give you a rate. The rate may vary based on whether you keep your collection at home, with or without a security system, in a safe or in a bank. I haven't chosen a company yet, but I've been actively researching it. Here are a couple of companies I'm considering:

American Collector's Insurance - covers animation art, but not paper items like comic books, not sure how or if they cover animation drawings as well as cels.

The National Association of Collectors has an insurance program as well, and it appears you don't have to be a member to participate:

This is a great question! I've definitely been thinking about getting my collection insured too!

I insured mine at collectinsure.com. You need to give them an inventory and I think they ask if you have an online gallery (i can't remember)... I basically figured out how much my collection was and based on that they quote a premium. I've never had to file a claim though so what I'm really interested in is what are peoples experience about claiming. I can say that it does give me some peace of mind. As for individual appraisals, there seems to be one herebut I never tried them.

I've been thinking about the same thing lately, and am also interested to hear any feedback. To this point, I've been counting on homeowners....
