How to get the newer artwork?

Post by dark-water-dragon »

I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how to get newer anime art. I have seen a couple of places that appear to have some artwork, but I have noticed that it seems to be much harder to get things that are newer, at least the ones that I am looking for. One of the shows I was looking for was Claymore but the only thing I have been able to find at this point was copy story boards. I have noticed that some of these shows just appear to be really hard to find and I was just wondering if anyone know were a good place to look would be.

Mandarake Everyday Auction is often a good place to spot art from very recent shows. Unfortunately, it's also a very expensive option, particularly if the series has admirers Japanside.

Beyond that, I'd advise patience. Two series that I liked, but could not find art from were Rozen Maiden (2004) and Asatte no Houkou (2006). There were a few sources for the first, but prices were very high, and none at all for the second.

Within the last year, good art from both has started to come on the market in greater quantity and reasonable prices.

Now if only Romeo x Juliet art would appear in the same way... (would love a sketch of Juliet as "The Crimson Tornado," or a really evil one of Montague-sama, or scatterbrained Willy, or...)

I hate to burst anyone's bubble (especially when I share the
same one !) but I've asked around for that series (as did
a closet collector friend of mine who is obsessed w/ that show) and
I can tell you why you havent seen artwork for it-- its all been
torched. :bawl :bawl

All the Clay-heads can hope for is that maybe some
roughs/layouts/genga might have escaped the burning belly of the
incinerator via employees or "pizza delivery" peeps. Honestly
I've had better luck on YHJ than Mandarake for the newer stuff
especially since employees would find it more
anon to post on yhj where you have to SEARCH for the stuff
than handing it to a store that takes your dats and posts it
internationally on an auction site for all to see and trace back.
:?

Time and persistence combined is key!
Good luck :)

Yeah, the newer shows are more difficult to locate. Many of them are like meteorite strikes. You don't know where or when they'll hit. Sometimes they really make themselves known by an enormous light then a big crowd rushes over to obtain the rocks in a mad rush. Then you never see a meteorite strike the rest of your life and you have to rely on others to buy the different rocks from them (secondhands).

Some shows were on YJ a lot in the past and I hardly ever see them now. It's just a matter of waiting for them to appear again. Ideally you would like to start looking for them as soon as possible. You don't want to hear someone say that they seen fifteen sets from it back in 2005 and have never seen any since. But some shows show up after very long periods of time so it wouldn't be good to say that the search is useless (just keep your expectations low).

I guess one trick is to just keep checking Yahoo Japan continuously and in as many different ways and categories as possible. Having a contact in Japan would be nice too for the stuff that doesn't make it online. But I don't think too many collectors are lucky enough to have those.

If you get too bored or frustrated you might want to do it in reverse and see if you want to start collecting from something that's actually available. But if your going to do it that way, at least try to only collect from shows that you REALLY like.

I was affraid of that, but why do they burn the artwork? I can not think of a logical reason to burn the artwork unless it is the only way to heat the building. I always thought that the cost to do anime is high due to the amount of man hours it take to draw all those pieces and by selling them to dealer the could take care of some of the cost of production.

I heard it was because the legal rights holders don't want miscellaneous artwork of theirs floating around.

It's pretty unusual to see production artwork from a show only once though. Usually it's either at least three to five times or never.

For the claymore anime, the only thing I have been able to find are scripts. I have the script for episode 17 (my favorite character Rifuru is in it)

Personally, I have no record of ever running across hand drawn Claymore production artwork. I likely would have saved a picture or link if I had.

But...it's not a MUST save series for me so I can't be sure on that.
