Have you ever bought backgrounds from a shows where you knew what show and/or what scene they came from?
Offhand I can only think of three times I bought backgrounds where I knew where they came from:
1. Kanon (2002)
2. Sadamitsu
3. KimiNozo OVA
I don't think I knew where the other backgrounds I've bought came from.

I assume you mean buying backgrounds that were not identified by series but sold just as "background."
No: though I've bought bgs many times that were sold as "background from CCS" (Princess Tutu, Tree of Palme, etc.) There are so many series that required original painted backgrounds that matching an anonymous painting to its original context is a daunting task. I do recall that another collector found that two of the bgs she got in a big lot came from NieA_7.

I just mean buying backgrounds where at least you knew what show they came from and the backgrounds didn't come with their cels or they came from a computer colored production.
I know a number of people buy backgrounds because they like how they look, but they don't know where they came from. I have a few of those.

I do, and that's what I've been buying lately. Sometimes it's the only original artwork you'll see from the anime. A lot of CG shows destroy their work, and I think it's especially true if the anime was not incredibly popular.
Some backgrounds really are a work of art. Although the artists get paid for their work, I wonder how they feel when their backgrounds are discarded (or torched) after they served their purpose. It makes me wonder if artists sometimes look around on online galleries and after finding something that they worked on, breathe a sigh of relief knowing that someone, somewhere, appreciated the time and effort they put in their work.

Yeah, it's very hard for me to recognize where a background comes from unless they are labeled by whoever is selling them. I recognized some Kurenai backgrounds, but that was only because they were so distinctive. I don't recall ever recognizing any others.
Hopefully more backgrounds from shows I like will come out in the future. I wouldn't mind getting a few. Unfortunately most backgrounds are pretty generic and don't have anything special attached to them. It's better when they come from somewhere that's recognizable. The rehab room in KimiNozo OVA was recognizable for example.

I have quite a few backgrounds that I bought because I recognized them. Most of them are from Mirage of Blaze, but there are also a few Fruits Basket BGs that I bought from the same seller.
They often came as part if a set, so there were backgrounds I did not recognize. I saved the ones I didn't know, and I have been surprised at how many I have been able to identify once I watched the shows they were from (Samurai Deeper Kyo, Saiyuki, Tenjho Tenge, Sakura Wars) Overall, most of my backgrounds are identified. I have 258 known backgrounds and 69 unknown.
I have only bought 1 background with the thought of matcing it with one of my cels. That cel was from Escaflowne. I waited for 5 years before doing this since I prefer to leave most of my cels naked if they do not have the matching background. Ironically, within a month of buying the non-matching background, the original came up for sale. I guess I won't be wasting my time and money doing that again.

I love looking at BGs! I'm always on the look out for sites that sell them. I really only purchase simplier ones to go with my cels, but some of them are sooo~o elaborate I would buy them and display them like fine art in my house!
Do I recognize most of them...no. But then I'm not as well versed in a lot of anime as others. I don't actually watch a whole lot of them.
I do have a BG on my Wishlist that I would kill to find!! I love it so much...it's a gorgeous night city-scape/harbor scene that pans over to a graveyard of crosses!! Image here: http://beautifulalone.rubberslug.com/ga ... shID=24360 If anyone ever sees this available, let me know!!! Heh.
