... that I got as part of a bad deal. The seller "salted" them with just enough nice-looking items that it seemed like I was getting a real hoard of middling-good to nice stuff. In fact, it was nearly all garbage: partials, teeny images, minor characters. One book has dozens of cels with images that look like dust specks that are dozens of little saguaro-type creatures crawling around in the distance.
Can I justify setting them out for the trash?
Or would someone like some of them just for the acetate or just to experiment with? They honestly are not even good enough to give out at con workshops as freebies.
I have about 200 "Tree of Palme" cels...

Ouch. Talk about an unscrupulous seller.
Perhaps one of the fan cel artists would like to take some off your hands, so they can wipe the acetate clean and reuse it.
Another use would be for people who like getting cels autographed; they can wipe the acetate clean and have a good autograph surface without worrying about damaging their expensive cels.

I could probably fit quite a few into a flat-rate Priority Mail box. Would anyone be willing to adopt a hundred or so for the cost of shipping?
When the "cel around the world" idea was active, I was dimly aware of it but not a participant. How would that work? Generate a list of participants and then box up an item (there are some cute ones of Bu down in a corner that might work) and start it off?
It certainly makes one more aware of what those stacks of boxes in storage rooms might well contain. We owe a vote of thanks for the hardy jobbers who somehow winnowed down the initial stocks of cels to the more modest (but still vast) number of collectable cels on the market today.

There was a topic where those interested in the project would express their interest and post their country. These people would be grouped together, so those in the US would send to the US members prior to sending to those who were abroad. This was done to diminish mailing costs. There were a couple of cels in the package, and you could sign them, sketch something, etc. on them. Some people took pics with the cels before sending them off. It took a couple of years for the cel to make its way to all the members, though, and there were times when we wondered if the cel would ever make it back to its original owner. Another factor that slowed down the project was that, as new members joined, they'd want to partake in the project.sensei wrote:I

I would say that, if you were to go ahead with the CATW project that you open the topic for about a month, compile a list and either one member store all name/address info, or have a participant PM the next participant in the project for the information.

In the end, that's what I did, cheap cel books and all. I still have some amazing aToP art, cels, backgrounds, genga. But it taught me that the good stuff is 1% of what was created for a project, maybe less.
