gunpla, mg or hg

Post by hgeek23 »

Didn't really know where this belonged on the forum I apologize if this is the wrong section but may I ask as to the advantages of an hg gunpla kit over a mg kit? I've read all the online stuff about higher cost and detail but I really am interested in knowing from a fun standpoint, is a mg model more fun to build? A greater challenge? Can it do more than an hg? I before I leave Japan I have the opportunity to pick up models at half the price I'd pay in the us effectively. I bought 5 model hg kits today of 00 (figure 3 for my little bro, 2 for me) but was wondering if I should exchange 2 hg kits for 2 mg kits. We'd be beginners

Somehow I think this post is in the wrong section, but ...

I've built oodles of both HG and MG kits -- imho, they are equally easy to assemble, but the MG kits are much much more detailed than the HG and end up looking better when finished (there are more parts, though, and so they will take longer to build and require a bit more meticulous attention to detail).

If you're just a beginner and you want to do something fun, but don't have the time or patience to deal with details, go with HG -- just keep in mind that most of the HG kits require a good deal of painting or decals afterwards to make it look "real". If you want a really awesome looking finished product without needing to do a lot of painting or detail work (and have the patience to deal with a lot of tiny parts) -- go with MG. Also note: The MG kits still need some paint or detail work for the best look, of course, and they're better articulated usually, than the HG kits.

My personal preference is for the MG kits whenever possible, but I've built tons of them, including a PG so ...

Hopefully that helps! :)

I'm writing this from Starbucks nakano! Sorry for wrong section, i thought that as an anime collectible it would fit. any idea as to the quality of the 1/100 kits loo see at the store without an mg or hg mark on them? I bought my bro and myself one black gundam marker and a cutter. Do I need anything else? There's spray paint from the looks of it.

Easiest way to paint gundam kits is actually with the gundam paint markers, if they still sell them -- they come in all the appropriate colors. I personally like to use Tamiya paints (best trick ever: watered down black as a wash, and then wipe away the residue before it dries -- allowing the black to settle darkest in the crevices between the parts -- will give you a great detailed look without a ton of work or airbrushing).

Most hobby stores here in the states sell Tamiya paints -- I've got a drawer filled with them.

Gundam marker sets: http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/gundammarkers2.html (so you can see what they look like).

The 1/100 kits are likely HG if they aren't marked. I've never seen an MG kit that wasn't marked as such ...
