The "Eye's" have it

Post by JWR »

We all have different aspects of the anime images we like. One thing that stands out and most point out as a major difference between Anime and American cartoons is the care, detail given to the Eyes. As the "Windows to the soul" the expression and emotions the artists can bring though them is impressive to say the least

So in your collections which images have the best eyes?

I will start with 3 that stand out for me

Akari from To Heart http://ryan.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_ ... mID=259227

Aoi from Ai Yori Aoshi http://ryan.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_ ... mID=125199

Rin from Maburaho http://ryan.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_ ... mID=231517
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Oh, look at the new mod :3
Love that Akari cel, so pretty.

I'd post a pissed Vegeta cel, but since I don't have it uploaded yet I guess I'll have to go with Princess Ahnasu from Windaria: http://mementomori.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=168775

Mama, from Tenshi ni Narumon: http://mementomori.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=176010
And Shizuku, from Hunter x Hunter: http://mementomori.rubberslug.com/galle ... mID=243297

I simply must reply to this because I have two sketches that are so perfect to what you mean. ^_^ These are oddities in my collection because I usually prefer things panned back, showing multiple characters and/or interaction between characters and objects, etc... But these two made me throw that out the window. They just both show the personalities respective characters perfectly!

Bonten from Amatsuki....

.... and Integra from Hellsing OVA:

(These are only slightly cropped, as I prefer not to show any of my sketches in their 100% entirety, but no major image components are left out.... the entirety of the focus of the image really is JUST the eyes! ^_^)

(Edited because I can't spell! Yay!)

I think this Shiori from Tokimeki Memorial has detailed eyes: http://lee.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=308700
Seems like this is true for quite a few characters from dating sim converted anime.

For sketch there are Kaon from Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora: http://lee.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=367487
and Mion from Higurashi: http://lee.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_i ... mID=376662

Good theme for sharing!

Magic Knight Rayearth was a great series for eyes of many different expressions. I love this blue-ice look of the OVA's Umi and this fiery smolder of the TV series' Hikaru.

Plus this creepy night-time reverie look from poor hapless Yuusuke in Tenshi ni Harumon.

And in case you assumed eyes had to be wide open to be expressive...

Lots more eyes in my sketches, but I'll end witha tired but determined glare from Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne.

A few of my favorites:

This cel of the egg-bearer from Angel's Egg. Her eyes aren't big or colorful, but sad and distant.

This sketch of Kino. The line-work in her eyes is so delicate.

This cel of Ushio from Neo Ranga. I love the color.

Ooo lovely topic

My favourite is the one I don't have an updated scan for, but I love this shot of Li watching Sakura (CCS).

I loved how the eyes looked in the layout sketch I got for Utako from CCD - it was fantastically better and more expressive than when she was put on model for her sketch/cel.

Honourable mention to Nokoru (CCD) because the shot I have is nothing but his eye o_O

Oh, great thread, JWR! :D

It's really interesting to take a closer look at my own collecting habits... I've come to the realization that I have a particular fondness for the designs by Motohashi Hideyuki. I never realized it until I found that I collected many items from the various series he worked on, most notibly for me: B't X.

But as far as cool eyes go, here's a couple from my gallery:

Art designs by Motohashi Hideyuki:

Teppei from B’t X

Young Quatro w/ tears from B’t X

Rei from Tokimeki Memorial
http://rekka.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv ... mID=324408

Angel Breed from Nightwalker
Although there isn't much detail in the eyes, they just seem to express much more that way. <3

I've always had a bit of a thing for this Refrain Blue cel:
Image

Her eyes always looked like red jewels to me. Their coloring was difficult to pull off in scans. It took me a long time to adjust the image properly.
