I steal them from Toei  . Nah just kidding, well I mostly buy my cels/genga's from the Beta Family. Let's see....

50% from Private Cel dealer
25% from auctions
25% from the Beta Family

I plan to raise my percentage under the Beta Family category*Winks at Pudge*

I got my first cels at a convention all those years ago. Then from online dealers in Japan and the US, then from a large private deal in Japan, then I discovered eBay and then YJ. Now I get cels so rarely, since I have narrowed my collection to mostly Hyper Police, Macross 7 and Ranma, that I just get them when and where I can, though I do admit that recently it's been mostly Mandarake auction.

Edit: Comment to Sakon: you should use Sato's service (not to bag Celga--I've used them too)! Sato's a great guy, and you can pay with money orders--very easy. I've never had any problems.
Thank you very much for the information Marauder - sounds great! :D Sorry for my lack of knowledge - can someone toss me a link?

Many Thanks,

Oooo, I'll have to change my links in my future posts and my FAQ. This will be much easier for people. :)

I voted for auctions, since that seems to be where I've been buying primarily for the past few months. It's probably spread fairly evenly across cel dealers and auctions though ... just the past 2 months have been extremely (EXTREMELY) heavily bent towards YJ. :P

Sato doesn't require Paypal, he'll take an IPMO ... unless things have changed since I first signed up.

Guess I should continue to read the whole thread before I post, huh? :P :P :P

Anyway, yes ... Sato has a new domain, and he's updated with a lot of new series on his list. Mmmmm... too much to look at now. :O

I would have to say that I get most of mine from auctions too. It would be interesting to see how buying cels from different venues affects the prices that you end up paying for the cels. I would think that buying from private collectors would be the best route to go expense-wise. Some dealers are so overpriced these days and I would have to say that I have paid through the nose for an auction far more frequently than I have gotten a good deal on one X|. Any one else have thoughts on that?

From what I've seen, it seems like people balk when the dealer sets something at say, $300... but then run off and bid up themselves in auction to more than that (assuming the first was bought)! I seem to have it about even chance with auctions and dealers on who's going to be cheaper.

I find that between the make offers/silent auctions (which I'm a little :/ about because you can't tell how fair it is sometimes) which are designed to encourage high bidding and the fact that collectors always want what they paid + what they paid for shipping + shipping to the winner when they set a price, it's hard to get things cheaply from other collectors. When desperation sets in things get lowered a little though.

Hmm, this is an interesting question. For me, where I obtain my cels from has gradually evolved over time. ^^ When I started out collecting, it was primarily cel dealers (most in the U.S.) I bought from. Then a couple of years ago, it was all about Yahoo Japan and Japanese dealers. Now, its kind of a mix between YJ, other auctions, and private collectors. It seems that most of my wishlist items are already in collections, so when I really want something, sometimes I have no choice but to email the person and try all sorts of desperate things to pry the cel out of their hands. :D Kinda sucks cause thats never the cheaper route to go. But the price you pay for dream cels...

Most of mine have come from cel dealers, the rest from private galleries. Only two, I think, have come from auctions, I just don't like using auctions for cel purchasing.
