I would never buy a Fan cel, even if it was my ultimate dream cel, It is against my collecting Goals, and I just dont get why you would want to buy one, yes, you can get somthing you may never get, by why would you want somthing somone else painted.....(Not going to get into that again)
Any-Hooo, I would never buy one.

I'd be willing to pay 75.00 or more, depending on the artist and what was done.

My personal opinion is that there are some things which are basically impossible to find ... such as hanken used for artbooks, posters, and covers for DVD/LDs. That's one thing I'd pay to have something similar made for a fan cel. Besides, the real thing for those generally will be a minimum of 500.00 and up to well over 5000.00 depending on what series and which artist painted it. The other thing I get is something that's just not in the anime - something to illustrate fanfics or just general ideas I have floating around in my head. ;)

It's all a matter of opinion and I do respect yours J.G. ... mines just the opposite is all. I like art in all forms, whether its a production cel or a "fan cel" or a simple line art drawing.

..... Besides, it's not like we'd ever get a cel made by the creators of the anime - they didn't paint the cels - at least not that I've *ever* heard. They just weren't involved that far down the line in the creation process. At best you might find a touchup genga.

I really agree with you, I dont have the cash to buy very expensive cels over 1000 dollars, the most I have ever paid is 400, so if I find a cel that is very nice, that would normally go over 1000, then a few bucks for a copy aint that bad, some people are very talented and basically could be animators, they just didnt work on the actual show, but JG, I do see your point, I am kind of in the middle of you two as I would buy one, but not pay too much.

My feelings are the same with SW.. Unfortunately, whenever someone thinks of a fancel nowadays, their thoughts are immediately focused on the crap sold on ebay by certain sellers that think fools will believe their two minute fingerpaintings are actual cels. Unfortunately that is very much a reality.

On the other hand, I have seen some GORGEOUS fancels. Works done by Requiem and some others are simply beautiful. Before, I never considered buying a fancel, I had the same thoughts as JG; I became a cel collector to collect just that, cels. However, my tastes are moving on to more *expensive* series and scenes. There's one cel I would absolutely kill for..well, I would have to do just that...KILL for it because I'd never be able to afford it. Had I been lucky enough to find it available on the market, I'd be paying well over $3000 for it and I could NEVER AFFORD that at this point, as I'm going to be making some $$ life choices soon, including marriage and buying a house. In this situation, having a fancel created would be ideal, as I would be happy owning something from the scene whether it's real or not, I wouldn't care since I could never afford an actual cel from the scene anyway, and I'd still have the money to spend on a wedding and such. :D

My Oppinion towards fancels is not because of the stuff on eBay or anything like that, it is not just somthing I say becasue I am tiered of seeing them and Allot suck, I acually like some fan cels, some artist are very talented and can make a very beautiful peice of art.
I also have expencive and Rare tast in scenes(rare and expencive to me), I have been shot down now for several dream cels that are totally out of my Price range (My price range being at the very most $300 USD) and I can Honestly say that I will probaly never get some of my Dream cel, But I don't get them made by means of Fan-cel, I just collect to have origanal peices of art made and used for production, I also respect your choice and oppinion's,everyone, I can under stand why you would want that type of stuff made by fan-cels SW, But this is just me, it is just a choice I made, I don't mind if other people buy them, I just don't want or care to own any.

Actually, I'm notoriously cheap, but let's have a little game... This is a 14x17 Hanken repro I just finished for someone in Japan. Now... any ideas how much the original would be worth and how much mine cost? I doubt anyone could tell them apart if they were sitting right next to each other.... come on, guess.

Requiem,
That is a beautiful repro. An original would cost around 5K. I'm sure yours would cost just a little less.

I agree with GB, 5K would be minimum. I loooooove that Gally!!! It's gorgeous!!

Anyway, I voted for the under $30 category. I normally don't buy fancels, but if I see a very gorgeous one, like Req's Gally, I may! I'm also thinking of having a cel layer painted for a cel coming in. It's more than one layer but they bottom one is missing, which makes the top a bit odd, so when the cel comes, in, I'm thinking of getting a cel layer 'fanpainted' to complete my cel.

*stares at the cel and DROOLS* See, now that is just exceptional art. My gawd. I seriously need to make up my damn mind on what I want done and contact you. I've been horribly wishy-washy and can't make up my mind. ;.;

As far as how much the original hanken would run... I'd guess a bit more then GB - I'd probably say 8-10k - if not more. (Maybe I'm way off... but I know production cels are really expensive..)

I can't wait to hear how much you charged though ^.^;;; My guess would probably be somewhere around 150 or so... I know your prices are very VERY reasonable.

I would never buy a fancel. Even if it comes to cels I may never see, I'd rather use that money towards other cels. I'd sooner just look at an image of a cel I'd like to have rather than a knock off. Just my opinion. :emb :emb

not that harsh... that's how I personally feel about most repros. Which is why I usually prefer NOT to do plain ole repros.

The only reason I liked doing that gally cel was because a) it was HUGE and b) you have no idea how agonizingly detailed it was and c) I made it EXACT right down to recreating the roughness of the lines and specially mixed every last color to match the reference cd jacket I was given.

The gally cel I did before that one was a 'do this cel exactly' too but since that was such a simple series cel ($15 cel) it was just boring.
