How many anime are there?
I'm bored.
1. Has anyone ever tried to guess how many anime titles exist (excluding short anime omakes)? What would you guess...somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000? I have no idea how many titles are even listed on the Anime News Network Encyclopedia. Myanimelist lists a lot of omakes so it's difficult using them for a count. How many titles are listed on AniDB?
2. How many adult ("hentai") anime are there?
If I had to guess on the H-anime, I'd say...somewhere between 900 and 2000 adult anime, but a more accurate figure would be helpful.
Has anyone ever seen estimates on such things?

Re: How many anime are there?
Done it partially for my MA thesis work for scale imaging. Data compiled from main studios catalogue listings from traditionnal handmade anime.
About 20.000 TV episodes (standard length) in about 6000 different TV series. Representing about one full year 24h a day watching TV and a volume of 1800x 18 wheelers trucks full of documents (about a half containership). Definitively huge and making easier the audience to understand why it is simply impossible for a japanese studio to preserve all its private archive and why anime raw material are available on collector's market. Didn't unfortunaly studied the Hentai genre in particular, all mixed together in the data.
Hope this answers the question

Re: How many anime are there?
I know at Anime Planet you can accumulate over two years of anime watching and that's only for watching non-adult anime. Of course that's including more recent anime too.
With Myanimelist though you can fake entires by saying you watched everything multiple times. Then you could say you watched 200 years worth of anime even though you're only 14 years old.
I suppose I could count ANN's Encyclopedia by hand but that would be pretty time consuming. Lol

Re: How many anime are there?
I went and counted 1,349 different anime listings from A to D on Anime New Encyclopedia. There were 28 listed in the # title section. This included adult anime and it went by the listing system that they used. Many titles are listed separately by season or season name changes, but I counted them that way individually. Not every anime is listed there,, but they fairly thorough.
If we assumed that A to D titles represented very roughly 17.9415855 percent of the total anime listed there (that's an educated guess), if we multiply it it would come out to 7,547 anime titles listed there that they know of. So if we went by ANN's separated anime title system, 6000-6600 LISTED non-adult anime titles wouldn't be too far off. The main question though is...exactly how many anime titles are really missing from the ANN Encyclopedia? That would add to the total.
And that's a very rough estimate anyway. The total might change significantly if I counted the entire ANN encyclopedia.

Re: How many anime are there?
Ah cool. Thanks for the links Benten!
So was Animechecklist compiling this before ANN Encyclopedia came out? It seems he was doing this from way back. I had not seen that site before. Now I'm sure there are at least 600 OVAs of adult anime alone. There should be more than 600 though. Not in the mood to click each entry at ANN. That would take even longer than just counting them.
I should look up some obscure stuff and see if I can find anything missing from anidb if anything. The days of me being able to go through ANN and find entries missing has long since passed. Lol. Someone who watches older anime would be much better than me at recognizing such missing entries.

Re: How many anime are there?
Anime title sounds then correct compared to my thesis work, just a note about "episodes", there are several series with 5 minutes episodes (or even less).benten wrote:

I do have focus on "standard size" episode and grouped episodes to make a "standard one". I do then consider that the AniDb information requires a filter.

Re: How many anime are there?
The Animechecklist site is based primarily upon Italian reference works. The main reference is:
Baricordi Andrea, De Giovanni Massimiliano, Pietroni Andrea, Rossi Barbara & Tunesi Sabrina - Anime, guida al cinema di animazione giapponese. Bologna, Granata Press - English version: Anime: A Guide To Japanese Animation 1958-1988. Translated from the Italian version by Adeline D'Opera and presented by Claude J. Pelletier. Montreal, Protoculture, 2000.
Animechecklist is among my oldest bookmarks. It predates ANN Encyclopedia. It worth noting that ANN brought Protoculture, the publisher of the English version of Anime: A Guide To Japanese Animation 1958-1988, some years ago.
Actually, the reference website that you really want to note is Richard's Animated Divots:
http://www.animated-divots.net/.
Click on his Chronology of Animation link, where you will find all of the animation listed by month of appearance, including Japanese animation. And this website is up to date. It has a wealth of information organized in an interesting fashion.

Very cool link Benten thanks! It's cool seeing what was coming out at around the same time.benten wrote:Actually, the reference website that you really want to note is Richard's Animated Divots:

Wow...how could I be so far off? Maybe I should keep counting and see where the total ends up.benten wrote:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/

They could be compiling it differently from me. They might be adding separate seasons together. That would be another way of compiling the numbers. Just to show how weird those figures sound. I have definitely seen at least one episode from 475 different adult anime OVAs (I double checked those titles). And 475 would be 23.2% of all the OVAs listed at ANN? That just doesn't sound right. That sounds way too high. This calls for a double check. I just want the method of counting to be consistent.

Re: How many anime are there?
I went and counted all the titles in ANN that were not italicized (or what I thought were not) and came out to a figure of 5,836 different entries from counting between July 10/11th to July 18th 2011 night. The current listed numbers at ANN are:
5873 anime titles (+ 349 related)
- 2399 TV series, 2048 OAVs, 1102 movies, 249 TV specials, 48 ONAs, 27 omnibus
I doubled checked my addition and all the totals came out the same and every time I double checked my counting, the numbers came out the same. So either I didn't count it right or something happened so that I didn't count them right.
The ANN Encyclopedia letter totals that I came up with are as follows:
# - 28
A - 331
B - 310
C - 304
D - 404
E - 96
F - 150
G - 329
H - 311
I - 157
J - 67
K - 394
L - 178
M - 555
N - 186
O - 167
P - 252
Q - 9
R - 149
S - 685
T - 325
U - 98
V - 58
W - 105
X - 21
Y - 121
Z - 46
Apparently the ANN Encyclopedia has a much higher ratio of English titles than my estimate of romaji first letter percentage for A-D Japanese anime titles and that was one reason my percentage estimate for the lettering was so far out of whack. Man...there's just a heck of a lot of anime titles that begin with the letter S. That's always been a nightmare letter for me. It's always difficult finding anything within all those S's.
So right now let's go with the rough 6,000 figure as Iceman said.
Next, I'll try and see if I can get a general idea of how many adult anime there are. That shouldn't be too difficult...just click all the OAV listings and then include the Yosuga no Sora TV series as a footnote.

Re: How many anime are there?
Here is another point, you have to take in consideration what is "adult" compared to the PG ratings of a specific time of broadcast.
i.e. this was "adult" in the time they were broadcasted but nowadays is just "basic" compared to any DDD japanese girl featuring in any anime :
