I think I might be a harsh judge of some of the more popular anime, but it seems that if it doesn't catch me in 1 or 2 episodes, then I don't want to watch it.

For example (since the banner for this site has changed has triggered my memory) - bleach. I've watched all of about half an episode of it and for the life of me it didn't catch me at all. Yes, it was some sort of 'filler episode' where the main character was in the hospital for some-such reason, but just watching the episode and reading the dialong (as I believe it was a fansub a friend was watching), it just didn't have 'it' for me at all. I guess it didn't intrigue me at all.

Naruto - watched an episode of this on CN a while back as this was so fricken popular at the time, nearly everyone at my local anime convention was wearing a ninja headband, so I figured there must be something to it. Well, if there was, I didn't find in in the one episode I watched. All I can remember of the episode was a lot of jumping thru trees (which seems to be common, so I doubt anyone could tell me which one I was watching) and some sort of 'trial by fire' going on as well for the female lead (don't remember her name). Although I liked parts of it, I just couldn't find myself caring what happened to the characters to continue watching. Sort of like how many didn't / can't like Eva because Shinji is just a little whiny bastard (but, I do like Eva, but don't want to open old wounds :) )

Kenshin and Champloo I couldn't get into I think mostly because I didn't, and probably still don't like period pieces... I don't now why, maybe it's just my own predudices.

Can't think of another one that I don't like yet, but I'm sure I could think of a few more, given time :)

If you like Eva, then you'll know how you have to see more then one episode to appreciate the anime! You really need to give Bleach, Naruto, and Kenshin another try! :vict

I donno - so far my 1-episode rule has worked out very well. Lists of anime I liked in 1 episode or less:
Eva (the first, I believe - and I sat thru the whole thing in one weekend too)

.hack/sign - of all the episodes, I watched one where BT and Bear are talking to each other. No action, no nothing going on at all, just talking - and I ended up loving the series...

blue gender - another one I just loved from episode 1 on that I couldn't stop watching

bubblegum crisis 2040 - one of my favs, I avoided it due to a friends dislike of the remake, but it was on one nite and just disregarded his thoughts on the series since!

blue seed - even though I saw tenticles and a lot of panty-shots in the single episode I first watched, I saw the interesting storyline it was developing and I just kept watching it all the way thru to the end of the series.

cowboy bebop - well, who couldn't love it when the very first episode you watched is when Edward is introduced...

and the list goes on, but I digress from the topic at hand...

..

I like all anime... But Hack/Sign is one of those anime's that make me fall asleep.

And I play Mud's, RPG's, Morphs, etc. (Gemstone III, Medevia, A ton of RPG's, Everquest, Everquest 2, Ultima Online, Final Fantasy XI, WoW. )

Can you explain to me why Hack sign was any good at all? The music and art was wonderful.

But The whole plot I found out was that Bear, Subaru, BLT, are like people who are bad parents (Bear), Over Eaters (BLT), Subaru (depressed handicapped), and Comatosed.

There isn't even any jiggling for you! I have no idea why you would like it.

They spent around 8 episodes just saying. There is a twilight bracelet. It will end the game. There is a twilight bracelet. It will end the game. There is a twilight bracelet. It will end the game. well, the reason I liked it .hack/sign was the fact that they had a lot of character developement as well as they did sort of hit home. The idea isn't really new to have characters play out their fantasies online, but it really helps flesh out a lot of the personalities between their IRL personas and those in the game.

For example, Bear is the tough fatherly figure who goes around spouting sage advice to everyone in the game, but can't seem to translate it into real life with his own son.

Tsukasa is your battered and abused kid who wanted so badly to be in a 'safe' place - but once he gets there, he realizes that he really doesn't want to be there at all and can't escape.

the whole key of the twilight thing is really just a plot device - the real jewel for me anyway is the very real characters who are lost within the game and must struggle to find out who they really are, and how to step away from the VR world and carry the characters they built within the game, into real life.

at least that's how I saw it :)

oh, and bouncy boobies isn't a draw for me, it just seems to end up in a lot of the anime I end up watching :)

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Somehow I didn't get any of that... Maybe the subs I watched were poorly translated?

The funny thing is the 11 years that I've spent on online games... I've known people who were bad parents and had to quit the game to have a better relationship with their one daughter.

If you spend 6-10 hours online every day, you just don't have time for your children.

I've seen every type of Online gamer, Real Estate Agent, Wealthy Land owner, Subway worker, etc. And I've seen much better drama online in the guilds/clans then in hack/sign. The characters were stale in comparison to the real life people I knew online.

I'll get an example tommorrow! :vict

It's on an old laptop I have!

P.s. The twilight bracelet was mentioned for 8 episodes straight! And in the end no one sees it and nothing was even said about it! It has to be the most horrible plot device ever.

It sounds like Richard Wagner's mythical ring from his opera Ring Trilogy. It didn't really have any power on its own. The ring was mainly symbolic.

That's interesting. :)

That's because .hack/sign is not supposed to be a stand alone anime. You're supposed to play the 4 games, and watch the 45 minute anime DVDs that come with them to get the full story. There's also a manga series and another anime that happens after all the stuff with the twilight bracelet.

In the game, you get and use the twilight bracelet within the first half hour of play (maybe less).

I'm another one who didn't really like Eva. I watched the entire series, and the last episode made my brain hurt. I had a foggy idea of what they were trying to say, and the second movie proved me right (thank goodness for honors classes! :P ). Btw, it's not a good idea to watch both movies in a row or right after the tv series. Too much repetition. X| I also had a hard time liking any of the characters, which puts it in my blah section (there are a few more anime out there like this, but I can't really think of any right now). The only one that I kind of liked ended up
dead. And obessesed over that witch Misato. Poor Kaji!
I think that the problem with Eva is that it is the first of its kind. Back in the day, packing so much philosophy into an anime was a major break through in the industry. So many other series have done it now, though, that many fans see similar anime before seeing Eva. So, when they get around to seeing the original, there's nothing original about it. I do, however, have to applaude the series for being the first of its kind (or, at least, the first of its kind to gain major notoriety). I don't think I'd watch it again, though.

Hmmm . . . Trinity Blood's kind of blah for me. I started watching it and have kind of set it aside for the moment. It had the same character problems that Eva had--for me, at least.

There's a whole bunch of things I won't even try. I don't really like the art in Dragon Ball (or any of the other DB series) so I won't pick it up. I don't watch yaoi, hentai, or shounen-ai. When the last one sneaks into my normal anime I get squimmish.

I won't watch uber-cutesie little girl anime on my own--I get my fair share of that when I watch anime with kymaera. :P (Hence his reference to me and Bottle Fairies a few pages back). I'll watch it, but I'm not about to go and buy it or download it.

I have to be in the right mood for Azumanga Daioh. The first time I watched it, I was bored to tears. The second time, I laughed my head off.

I've bought the Hack/sign manga from Tower Records and it was cute... I read the whole series and I like the manga!

The Kite clone uses the bracelet... and he can make things go poof! "Magically"

Level 800 Zombie Dragon turns into a Level 1 baby Geico Gecko and they can defeat it.

::Takes out Dagger and carves out the Gecko's heart::

But It didn't compell me to buy the 4 or 5 Hack/sign video games.

Could you please give me spoilers as to what is so special with the Twilight Bracelet?

I LOVE SPOILERS! Please, tell me! /kis I mean I have to know why they spent 8 episodes on that bracelet. I mean the bracelet is an interesting toy, but 8 episodes zzzzzzzzzzz......????

Big Huggles for KAji!

*coff*

Well, see . . . I never quite finished the first game, let alone the other three. They're in my pile, waiting . . .

The story was compeling enough, but I don't really like the dungeons. They're all based on a couple basic layouts, which is probably how real interactive gaming is done, I suppose.

You might try asking kymaera. I think he finished them . . . at the very least, he's farther along than me. :D Sometimes he's a snot about telling spoilers, though (won't even let me read the back covers of the anime we're watching! :P ).

All I remember is that Kite uses the bracelet to Data Drain monsters, rewriting their coding to make them weaker. That's not much of a spoiler, because like I said, you get and use the bracelet pretty early on in the game. :)

My list of disliked/hated anime is pretty long. I don't need an intricate plot, I mostly watch for the characters, art, humor, and action. I see a lot of people despise Bobobo-Bo-Bobo (I think that's it), which I like-but only for Bobobo and Don Patch (the sun guy), it has very random moments that I find humorous, outside of those two though I hate the show, and can see why it's not popular.

As for the shows I can't stand:

Inuyasha - It has a few characters like Sango and Kirara, but most of them are so easy to hate and the show is boring. I've seen about 60 episodes and don't get why it has such a following.

One Piece - I find most of the character designs to be hideous and the humor to be hit-or-miss, and mostly miss. I like pirates, but this show doesn't feel piratey.

Samurai Champloo - I don't get the appeal of this, it bores me so much. The action doesn't catch my attention at all, and the characters just aren't likeable.

.Hack//Sign - Is one of the easiest animes to hate for me.

Wordsworth - I'm not a fan of Hentai, and this just reinforced my opinion that the genre is pointless. (Don't read into that...)

Wolf's Rain - There were no good characters in this.

Eureka Seven - Ugly characters who are impossible to like and a retarded story.

Trinity Blood - No characters to like and it's boring.

Paranoia Agent - HATE that stupid stuffed dog.

Full Metal Alchemist - It had some decent characters, but I found the show to be incredibly boring.

Any Monster Anime - Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, etc. They're so boring.

"Cheap" Anime - Shows you see on WB/CN at 4 pm on weekdays, things like that.

Other animes that I didn't get why they were special, but didn't hate. - Trigun, Tokyo Babylon, Sailor Moon, Pet Shop of Horrors, the Older Gundam series, Macross-anything, Iczer, FLCL, Zoids, Blue Gender, etc.

I'm sure I angered someone.
Don't touch me, but I need a hug.
