Fave anime character round #5 - closed
Oh, thank you very much, Syan
( as well as Kata, and Kathpatty). I will try not to let it be wasted!
Voting for:
1. Medicine Seller -Bake Neko/ Mononoke
Just because he isn’t human, doesn’t mean that the Medicine Seller is immune to strong emotions.
Though he usually plays it reeeal coool (well, the new manga based on this series is classified as seinen, or Young Men’s manga) you get the feeling these still waters
run very deep….
In the third story of Mononoke, Noppera-bō, (a faceless ghost in Japanese folktales, but here used to illustrate how we wear different faces, or masks, to hide the truth from others…or ourselves) our Medicine Seller is seen incongruously sharing a prison cell with a woman who is a supposed mass murderer of her husband and her In-laws. He quizzes her, but she can’t seem to recall anything about the murders…curiouser and curiouser…
Then a Mononoke appears. He is masked (i.e., faceless), but there is no mistaking who he is by this point in the series!
The Medicine Seller is having a disagreement with himself, and this is llustrated by him literally fighting with himself.
At first, the emotional, take-action part of him wins… and sweeps “O-chou-san” away to a grove of flowering trees, proposing escape from her prison, and
marriage to him….
But at this point, his rational side reasserts itself, and relentlessly brings the truth to light.
Then he drops the honorific from the end of her name, and asks, for the final time,
(click screen to play clip-but, Warning:spoiler)
"O-Chou, who did you kill?”
Yes,
and now
…and the Medicine Seller MUST purify all mononoke….
So as his warrior form
there is this...
heartrending exchange
(click screen to play)
Kanashi ki, Mononoke...
And so, at the end, he is left smoking the pipe his warrior form used to fight with him,
sitting in the kitchen from which O-chou’s

...alone.

I wanted to make long posts for these great characters…
But even with an extra week I’m all out of time!!!
I’ll just have to try harder next time…. If they make it….
Voting
2. Himura Kenshin - Rurouni Kenshin
Got the clips ready…but ran out of TIME! I sure hope he’ll last ‘til I
can get a decent post together
3. Birdy - Birdy the Mighty
She deserves much better treatment than I’ve given her, but she’s pretty tolerant
4. Hiei - Yu Yu Hakusho
He’s not tolerant at all, so I hope he isn’t too mad at my holiday induced neglect…
5. Lelouch Lamperouge - Code Geass
Yes, my Lordo!
6. Mugen - Samurai Champloo
Strong and Enduring!
7. Griffith - Berserk
A facinating character, both as the man and as the monster!
8. Deidara - Naruto
Art in Action…kinetic and captivating!
9. Nodame - Nodame Cantabile
Funny, touching, frustrating, inspiring…all the things an engaging character should be!
10. Ikkaku - Bleach
An all around fun guy…in a crazy, fight obsessed nut-case kinda way…..
11. Inuyasha - Inuyasha
Not as pretty, not as powerful, not as gifted…but with ten times the heart…and an unbreakable spirit!!!
